Earlier I wrote my impressions of the used, but in excellent condition, 4 inch barrel XD .45. To sum up, I liked it very well, my only problems were I though it had a higher perceived recoil than my other .45s and it didn't like lighter loads or wadcutters. Saturday I bought a new 5 inch .45 M&P with no safety and no magazine disconnect. Couldn't pass up the rebate offer since I have been thinking of getting one of these anyway.
I and a friend put over 250 rounds through it today and also shot the XD for comparison. At this point the XD has a better trigger, but we got used to the M&P trigger as the day wore on and I think the trigger wore in a bit also. I tried the smaller grips on the M&P and they didn't work real well with my big hands, the point of impact was low. Gooseberi tried it, and the small grips fit her hand, but she said the trigger guard banged up her middle finger. She doesn't really like any .45 but the Sig P220, and she loves that. When I put on the bigger grip, Matt and I both liked the way it felt, and got to where we shot it pretty well, He dialed it in faster that I did.
The M&P has a smaller magazine capacity 10 vs 13 and, being new was pretty hard to load. The XD was easier and had stainless magazines. The magazines on the M&P where finished black like the slide.
The M&P ate everything I fed it without a bobble, the XD still only likes full power round nose loads. I haven't tried either with hollow points as I don't feel that hollow points are all that necessary for the .45 acp. While experimenting with different grips on the XD I managed to hit the mag release button a couple of times and partially dropped the magazine. This did not happen to Matt.
Sight picture was about the same for both guns, just the standard 3 white dots. They both have the rails for lights and such which I don't care about.
At this point I'd give a slight edge to the M&P as a service/carry gun because it fed everything. The XD is a little easier to shoot at this point, but I did have the problem with hitting the magazine release. Matt and I were both able to stay in the center of the silhouette target in rapid fire at 7 and 12 yards with group sizes 3 to 5 inch groups, one and 2 handed. With slow fire and a 2 hand grip we shot smaller groups, but I shoot for self defense rather than groups and don't really pay much attention to slow fire unless I'm learning to use a certain pistol, as we were doing with these 2 today.
I think they are both fine pistols and I intend to keep and shot both.
Matt brought his new Millennium Pro .40 along and shot that about as well as these 2. But he said that I had sabotaged him and he now felt he needed a big .45.

I have my reservations re: both these guns. I'd still go Glock or HK if I were in the market for another poly gun.

I must have misread my post, I didn't think I mentioned Glock. I've tried Glocks and have no interest in owning one. I own an HK USP-C in .45 and it is a good gun, but either of these 2 are just as good for less money.

My first full-time carry gun was a XD9-sc. After playing with the M&P, shooting it a few times, I traded from the XD to an M&P-9mm.

I think the M&P has the best striker-action trigger of any gun i've ever shot.

I am carrying a 1911 now for wintertime, but will go back to the M&P once it warms up.

I agree, I think todays gun manufacturers are so equall, it just depends on what you like and can afford..........I prefer glock, but if an intruder were breaking in my house, i would feel just as safe with a sig, xD , beretta, etc.............

You mean you didn't see the "Caution: Glock Fanboy Crossing" sign?

I was going to get a M&P because of the rebate and free mag offer, but it just didn't feel as good in my hand as the XD45. I was disappointed because the M&P sure would end up being a good buy. I haven't got the XD45 yet (just got another XD9, a CZ 75 B, and put some money down on a Keltec P-11) but it is in my future.

Good comparison write up Nelson . Thanks !

I had the same recoil impressions with the XD . Seemed much sharper in my palm than any other 45 I've shot ... 1911 , Sig , HK , Ruger . I have yet to try the M&P 45 (I own the M&P9) , but I am definately interested in one for a future purchase .

My 5" XD45 has been flawless in feeding everything I give it...ball, JHP, SWC...so I'm not sure your experiences are the rule.

I do agree that the trigger on the M&P is better than the XD...but the XD is better than Glocks. I also despise the grip angle on Glocks so I have no intention of getting one.

xd is my perference, the one thing that the m&p has going for it is the interchanable backstraps. that is a nice feature, but one i personally don't need as the xd fits me perfectly. plus the xd is easier to dissassemble nothing other than your hand and fingers to take it apart.

I assume by disassemble you mean field strip? In that case I can field strip my M&P with just my fingers and no tools as well. :)

If its 45...

I'd take the XD. The Compact has 10 rounds in a VERY nice grip for concealed carry about the size of a CZ 75 Compact. For service or nightstand use, slap in a 13 round mag with integral sleeve for larger capacity. The trigger OTB is probably just as good on the XD. I hear that the MP can be tuned to like-1911 standards, so that is good. But, the XD 45C is VERY nice. I just shot mine, and it fed Rem cheapo HPs like candy, and I can slow feed an old 195 gr Speer ASHCAN into her slowly - a little test I have for 45s feeding 'tough' to feed ammo. I do like the MP grip - especially in 9mm, but don't like the loooonnnngggg beavertail. In 45, you cannot beat the versatility of the 45 Compact.

Owning both I have to give the nod to the M&P. With the medium grip it fits my hand better then the XD. I was never a big fan of the longer grip on the XD either. Lower bore which means less flip. Triggers are a push I think. The XD is better out of the box, but the M&P will break-in after a few hundred rounds and meet it. A do-it-yourself trigger job can make it great, or a quick, and fairly inexpensive, trip to the gunsmith can make it great.

They are both great guns, but all things considered I will probably be putting the XD in the Marketplace before too long.

The XD was my favorite plastic pistol until the M&P came out. Still love the 5" XD tacticals for range use as that extra inch makes a disproportionate difference for my old eyeballs.

I thought the XD was ugly until I shot one, the M&P always looked pretty good to me, but shooting one really sealed the deal.

Glocks and XDs either fit you or they don't, the M&P gives you three different feels. Medium works best your me. Glocks I just can't shoot well, fine off a rest but real world, there is no gun I shoot worse. YMMV.

I hope a 5" M&P series is in the works.

You can never fault someone for using a gun that fits them better, and makes them shoot better. I've got three XDs, they fit well, shoot gun, and don't fail. I really like having the extra grip safety on my carry gun. Never shot an M&P. I'm still mad at S&W for the Sigma, and for something I can't remember, but seems vaguely political. I'd love to go to their winter IDPA match though.

MP over XD

I do own two XD .45's a Tactical model and a Service model. I now own three MP's, all full size, a .45 .40 and 9mm. The XD and MP are both Great Guns and Very Reliable, but I am more accurate with the MP. The ergonomics of the MP are Awesome! I have a Hogue slip on grip on my MP's which helps me get a little better grip. With the lower bore axis on the MP I am more accurate and there is less recoil. The only thing the XD has over the MP is the Mag capacity. You could wait until the 14rd mags come out for the MP .45 Or you may want to consider an MP .40, they have a mag capacity of 15 Rds and with the right ammo is an Excellent Stopper. I have noticed that .40 cal ammo is less expensive for practice and readily available for online purchase of self defense ammo. Since it has become the Police caliber of choice. I use the Winchester Bonded 180gr LE Ammo in my .40's-Great Ammo!

The Best to You and Yours!
