I am intrigued by both the XD and M&P. A guy at the local gunshop broke down (field stripped) and XD for me, and showed that it was (internally) a Glock with a grip safety.....but much more robust in size of parts than a Glock. I also understand that it has the same grip angle of a 1911, which I REALLY like.

So I'm interested in hearing comparisons of the XD and M&P. Similarities, differences, pros/cons of each design. Which would you choose, and why? I'm really not picky about size of the gun, nor caliber. This will just be a fun range gun.....maybe in the nightstand for HD. I shoot both .45 and 9mm, so I'd probably get a full-size .45 or a full or midsize 9mm.

Thanks

The XD was my favorite plastic pistol until the M&P. The changeable back straps on the M&P let you fine tune the feel.

I like either better than a Glock.

The current $50 rebate and 2 free magazine offer S&W is running now make it tough to pass up for anything else right now.

1100 rounds of various brands of ammo 100% of which have gone bang on my M&P 9c, couldn't ask for much more. $439 shipped at Buds for either 9mm or .40 fullsized - $50 rebate and 2 free mags Along with 3 interchangeable back straps....how could you go wrong?

I prefer the M&P. Its more comfortable, nice pointability, and easier to shoot. The M&P had the lowest recoil of any polymer fullsize pistol I've shot so far. I was truly impressed by the low muzzle rise of the M&P. The only fault would be the gritty trigger. Very unpleasant to pull, but a trip to Dan Burwell made it one of the sweetest shooting polymer pistols I've experienced.

The XD, while a nice gun felt wrong in the way it handled. It feels really front heavy, so it took a slightly longer adjustment to line up my sight every time I shoot one. Feels good, and has a better stock trigger than the M&P in my opinion. Everything else goes in favor towards the M&P.

Springfield and S&W, can't go wrong with either. They'll both backup their products if asked to.

My M&P trigger was "gritty" for the 1st 500 or so rounds, it's smoothed out nicely since then. Oh and how can you beat a lifetime warranty? Does Glock or Springfield offer that?

WOW, first 4 replies are M&P! I was really leaning towards an XD, mainly b/c I've handled one....and have never seen a M&P in person. I did feel that the XD didn't point quite as well as I thought it would. Same grip angle of 1911....maybe it is. But, when I bring up my 1911, the sights just naturally line up. When I brought up the XD, I had to tilt it down a tad to get the sights alligned. Maybe it's just me, maybe I'm just not used to the feel of the XD.

But it is wierd that Black Majic says that the XD feels front heavy, b/c I've heard others say that too. You'd just think that if it is front heavy, I wouldn't have to tilt it down to get the sight plane level????

I shoot my dad's Glock 17 often, and I've shot an XD before. I would buy the M&P without even shooting it first.

I have an M&P in .40 and an XD Service in 9mm. I love the M&P's feel and I shoot it better. The XD feels good too, but I don't seem to shoot it as well.
That said, the M&P is next to my bed and the XD is in my desk drawer. They are both good guns IMO.

If you can get to a range that rents both, shoot em side by side and see which one is best for you. IMO, you can't go wrong with either one.

Each to their own,but I prefer the Springfield XD models...have 4 now and going for a 5th (357Sig) next week.I shot a M&P,and have nothing, whatsoever against this wonderful firearm, but, for me it was the feel of the gun in hand, the XD's seemed to be more of a 'match' for the wife and I.

Last week I tried an M&P .40 at the range, alongside a Glock, a Sig, and an XD.

I hated the M&P. It was just nasty-awful from the moment I picked it up, even before I loaded it. And I had been, past tense, seriously considering buying one.

It surely didn't help that, as it turns out, I really dislike shooting .40 in general. Still, the M&P was the most unpleasant of the bunch.

I think the M&P is the new flavor and therefore will get a few more yeses.

With that said, I like any of the three mentions. I've shot all thee and I don't thik there is a dime differance between them.

The only thing I like the Glock better because I can buy a 22lr for it and the magazines are a little bit cheaper.

22lr

I've only shot M&P and Glock out of the three. I've held an XD.

I chose the M&P for a few reasons
1. less expensive of the group ($489 compared to $499 XD and $550ish Glock -- prices from my gun store)
2. even LESS expensive after the $50 rebate
3. 2 free magazines
4. The XD did feel a little top heavy, but it still felt nice to hold. The M&P just felt...natural when I held it. Glock was kinda awkward and VERY topheavy, I also don't like the way they shoot very much.

Anyway, so I got the M&P. and I have not regretted it. The little lever on the inside to fieldstrip is probably the only downside (I dont have a magazine drop safety), but it's not that big of a deal and it still is quick and easy to strip.

(oh, and I think the steel magazines help the M&P not be so topheavy even when empty).

I have an XD45 because I ran into a smoking deal on one. It's reliable as hell, fits my hand well, and accurate to boot.

That said, the M&P is a very nice gun too. If you have the opportunity to do so, make a point of handling both as much as you can and shoot them both if at all possible.

A XD is not just like a Glock on the inside with the exception of a grip safety

Come on...
1. $10 difference on a $500 gun? Big deal. 2%.
2. Does the M&P come with a holster, mag holster, mag loader, and 2 or 3 mags (my XD Service came w/ 3 mags for some reason, my XD Compact, just 2)? Not the best stuff out there, but nice freebies.
3. See #2.
4. Fair enough.

I've only been shooting XDs for a few months, but I like them. I didn't like the feel of the Glock in my hand, and the grip safety is an added bonus. They are solid, and I've never had a failure to feed or fire in ~750rds of various ammo between my 2 XDs. (I even intentionally didn't clean my Service for the first 400 rds or so.)

I did, however, take a S&W Handgun course recently, and used a rental M&P in class. It felt nice, shot OK (we didn't go for accuracy, though), but it did fail to feed a few times in class (<80 rds shot total), as did the instructor's M&P, to the point he had to rack the slide after every round (this was with WWB ammo). Granted, it was a range gun (don't know about the instructor's) and has seen some use / abuse, but my XDs just feel more 'solid' than the M&P, and at this point I'm more prone to trust them than the M&P, but I guess I am a bit biased.

Just my opinion and experience...

I have several thousand rounds through a XD40SC and a M&P full size 9mm. Neither gun has failed to feed or fire either WWB or my reloads (with the exception of one XD mag that I'd dropped and bent the feed lips on-not a gun problem.) The XD did feel top heavy to me.

I like the ergonomics of the M&P better than the XD and the 9mm M&P is a very soft shooter. If I were to buy another XD, I think I'd go with the 4" over the sub compact. The "build" on the XD seems sturdier, i.e. more metal.

I've never owned a Glock but have shot a few and prefer either the XD or M&P. (I like my Springfield 1911s the most, though.) You read about the XD having the same grip "feel" as a 1911. I'd say this about the M&P, as well. The M&P full size is the same size as my LW Champion and, with the small grip on the M&P feels very similar to the 1911 to me (not the trigger, of course).

I considered these three for my first handgun

Quickly discounted the Glock after handling one.

Was a tough decision between the other two, both had their own pluses.

Ended up picking the XD (9mm subcompact) because I shot better with it.

Great gun

I own both the M&P .40 S&W and the XD .40 S&W tactical. I like shooting the M&P more than the XD, but just by a bit. The more rounds I put through each gun, the more I realize that they are both accurate as long as I'm putting in the work.

I see advantages in both, but to just purely like one over the other I lean slightly more toward the M&P. If the M&P comes out with a long slide in .40 S&W, I may not need to pull my XD out of the safe ever again.

No matter which you choose, you won't be sorry.

I have never been comfortable with the grip of the Glock and the 20/21 frame was too big for me to get a proper grip and still reach the trigger. They look like a Model T.

The XD grip is better than the Glock but still feels a bit blockey. The Slide sits higher up on the frame so the recoil feels a bit more snappy to me. The XD is like a 55 Ford well built but a little squareish and old school.

The M&P grip is more contoured and the angle is more natural to me. The slide sits lower on the frame. The recoil feels more like a push than a twist on the wrist. I find it easier to recover the target because of this. The M&P is more like my 99 Camaro SS than dad's 55 Ford. It suits me better.

the ergos of the m&p are nice, but i have 100% trust and confidence in the xd series, i have two, and i would/ will buy more. i do reccomend them to anyone that wants a great reliable accurate handgun. the xd's are what i know and have used more than any other handgun out there.

4. Fair enough.

1. didn't i say it was marginal? maybe not, but it was
2. none of that stuff appealed to me, do you USE it?
3. .
4.yup

it was a close decision, but really the $50 rebate pushed it over the edge. I would be equally happy with an XD, I think. my point was just that I've been happy w/ the M&P, and it has not had any malfunctions since one FTE in the first 100 rounds.

oh yeah, another factor that I forgot to mention is that all that was in stock at the time was an XD tactical...and I didn't want the 5" barrel

Another M&P vote. Love my .45. Runs perfect with everything from Wolf and other cheap stuff to my +P loads pushing 240 grainers at 1040 FPS.

The XD's are good guns, but are more nose heavy and have a higher bore axis. The M&P just has better ergo's and cleaner lines, IMO. Being made in the USA is also a plus.

There is no reason to even consider a Glock with the M&P and XD available.
