XD vs. S&W M&P

I'm an admitted fan of the M&P series, and would recommend it without hesitation. I like Glocks as well, but the M&P is just a little nicer in the handling partner.

I don't own an XD, but I have done a fair amount of shooting with them and don't like them. Top heavy, excessive muzzle rise for the caliber and size, and mushy, inconsistent triggers.

M&P felt more natural to me. I love the interchangeable grips. I love the rebate+mags. I have great personal experience with S&W. I bought the M&P.
Liked it so much after just the first 300 rounds, that I just bought the M&P compact. How's that for an endorsement?

Both XD & M&P are outstanding. The Glock is reliable as gravity but lousy ergonomics. (for me)

My choice is the XD but can't fault any of these choices. Whatever you can shoot best is what you should get.

I guess I really do just need to shoot both. I read the new SGN article about the HK45 today, and now I REALLY want one.....but damn...$1000 is STEEP. I have never liked plastic pistols, but the whole XD thing and the success of the M&P got me wanting one.

Is it true that the highest cap for a M&P .45 is 10? 14 rounds in the XD?

I have the XD 45, my friend has the M&P 45.

We both shot the same with both. They're both great guns. The XD won with me, It just felt better for me.

Both great guns.

I have said this in a million threads but long story shot, I wanted a XD until I held and shot the M&P. Now I own the M&P.

Same here. Try holding each one in your hand and gauge the feel, especially if the shop will let you try the different M&P backstraps (takes 5 seconds to switch out).

I like the XD a lot too, I may still get one. I was on the verge of buying an XD45 but the grip felt too much like a block of soap in my hand. The M&P45 just felt like a natural extension of my hand, so I ended up buying the M&P45. I'm sure I would have been happy with an XD45 too, the M&P just felt better to me.

Some people feel the reverse and prefer the XD's feel in the hand, so try both and see which is right for you.

When I shot the M&P I has assumed that the 10 round magazine was just a pc thing. Looked at a G/A article and it seems that that is the max.

While such is a factor, unless I were walking a beat, I would not choose one over the other on that basis unless all other factors were equal. (btw I say this as one that chose the XD)

Considering the amount of rounds an XD45 will hold the grip is remarkable. I have shot an M&P 9mm and really liked the grip.

I don't have a problem with muzzle flip on the XD45 tactical, in fact, I found follow up shots quick compared to a Ruger P90 I've shot.

M&Pc 9mm. Two in my house. Both run great and serve for CC and IDPA.
Ideally compare for yourself, because what works for me may or may not work for you or others.

Is it true that the highest cap for a M&P .45 is 10? 14 rounds in the XD?

M&P is 10+1, XD is 13+1.

S&W will be releasing 14 round extgended mags for the M&P, but they have not set a date. I keep nagging them, but no answer yet.

When I shot the M&P I has assumed that the 10 round magazine was just a pc thing.

According to S&W, it was an ergonomics thing.

With the AGP mag extension I can get 16+1 rounds in my 45 acp XD....

That said XD is coming out with a manual safety model if you're still on the fence about them.

What sold me as an XD fan is that I can hit the target standing up at 50 yards, the rest of the people at the range were wondering *** I was doing as they were shooting at targets at 20 feet or less.

Bought the M&P to turn around and sell so I could buy what I wanted because it was such a good deal.

Then I held it in my hand.

I couldn't put it down.

Now it's my carry gun.

I have a Glock 17, an XD9sc, and an M&Pfs .40. I like them all! If I could only keep one it would be a difficult decision, but I would probably go with the M&P. Great ergonomics.

I have an XD-40 Service and an XD-40 Subcompact. My wife has a S&W M&P 9mm Compact. I've field stripped, cleaned and shot both guns numerous times. I'm not sure I can pick a clear favorite. I like the ergos on the Smith slightly better, but prefer the trigger on the XD. Both are reliable and accurate. I could honestly recommend either gun with equal enthusiasm.

I rented and shot both. I chose the M&P, although I went with the compact one as - what I thought to be at the time - a more all-around useful size. I liked the grip feel and trigger action of the M&P better, feeling more comfortable right away with it. Neither malfunctioned when I shot them, which is 90% of my criteria for what constitutes a "good" gun. And my M&P, with ~ 1100 rounds through it, has functioned perfectly, right from the very first round.

I urge you, if possible, to rent and shoot both. You may like the other one better, for all I know. It is your call to make.

Or, buy both.

I shot both and prefer the XD. My suggestion is shoot both and go with whichever you prefer than.

I have an XD 45 that fits my hand well, shoots well, etc. Then, I was looking for a compact pistol for all the time carry. I looked very hard at an XD 9 compact as well as the M&P 9mm compact. I ended up buying the M&P and have not regretted it at all.

Both guns shoot very well, and are accurate, but the compact M&P felt just a little less blocky than the XD. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I LOVE my M&P!! it shoots like a dream!! Utterly dependable. Did i mention made in the USA?? that has to count for something!!

I think both are good handguns, but ergonomics go to the M&P. I'm thinking of getting my wife one.
