Im a new poster here but i have been lurking for a while. I have a question for you guys, Is there a big difference between the XD and the XD-M? Im going to purchase my first handgun and i fell in love with the XD-M but unfortunately in the great state of NJ I cant get this gun due to the magazine capacity.:banghead::banghead::banghead: Besides the mag size and the match grade barrel is there that much of a difference between the two that a new shooter will notice?

The xdm also comes with a match grade trigger and interchangeable back straps. so you can change the size of the grip to fit different size hands. IMO its the better buy. From what i have seen, only down size is it only comes in the size and thats the full size. But i may be wrong. The regular XD you can get in sub compact, compact or full size.

I have an XD .45 ACP service model that I really like, but the ergonomics of the XD-M .40 that I handled seem even better: better fit of my grip, easier to rack the slide, easier to press the magazine release button.

But as Devildog4329 said the current XD-Ms only come in the 4.5" barrel length which may or not be what you want.

The trigger of the XD-M I tried felt perhaps a little better, but I have no problem with my current trigger. I'm not a good enough shot that the match grade barrel's going to make any meaningful difference.

Also, if you're thinking about a compact model they're only available in the XD series: and I found that the compact S&W M&Ps fit my hand better than the compact XDs I tried.

Whatever you choose, as long as it fits your hand I don't think you can go wrong with any of the XDs or XD-Ms.

I believe the XDm has a few cosmetic changes and a few spec upgrades. New shooters might not notice or understand the importance of the changes made between the models.

It does not seem to me, from what I've heard, that the basic mechanicals in the two pistols are much different. If that's true, and the differences are mostly cosmetic/ergonomic refinements, then I can't see paying the extra $150 that an XDm will cost over a comparable XD unless the XD just flatly does not fit you.

I would have no issues buying an XD instead of an XDm.

You may safely ignore the "match grade" advertising. They want you to think that means their stuff is of higher quality. It isn't. You can enter a match with anything. After all, they say "match grade", not "match WINNING grade."

The real differences are that the M has a "no trigger pull takedown", way kewl surface textures, and two more rounds in the magazine. Unfortunately, that last means that the original and M magazines are not interchangeable. I think that a mistake and that there will be a lot of confused and complaining customers.

I like the XD grip vs the XDm grip, which is too beefy for my taste. The trigger on the XD is quite nice. I have never tried one on the XDm, but I doubt is is a great deal better. I won't be getting one myself. I'll stick with my XD.

The main thing of the XDm is the ergos, and the higher capacity. 19+1 for the 9mm! I hope they will be coming out with a subcompact soon, but they are really new....

Try a search in these forums for "xdm". This question has been asked many times in the last few months. Here is my canned response to the last two threads dealing with this:

I own an XD-40 subcompact and an XDM-40 bi-tone.

Here are most, if not all, of the differences between an XDM an an original XD: 3 interchangeable backstraps, higher magazine capacity (without widening the grip, they actually shaved material off from inside the magazine well), slightly different ergonomics (tapered slide, wider sharper notches where your fingers grip the slide to rack it, lots more checkering or stipling on the grip), match grade barrel, slightly crisper trigger with a shorter reset (it feels awesome), slight serrations on the rear sight to help reduce glare, no trigger pull necessary to disassemble, and a slightly higher price tag. But I really like mine, it's extremely accurate, and as with all XD models, points naturally and feels great in the hand. The grip angle and width, dimensions, etc. honestly feel almost as good as a government 1911. I'm still under the 1,000 round count on mine, but I like it more and more each time I shoot it.
