I just got an XDm 3.8" .40 S&W yesterday. It came with a nylon bore brush, but I also have a universal pistol kit that has brass brushes in it.
My question is this, will it hurt the barrel to use brass brushes on it? I didn't think it would, but my dad has a Glock and he said it came with a nylon brush too. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to mess up my match grade barrel.

Nope. Tools made of softer materials, be it brass, bronze, aluminum, polymer, cotton or nylon, are always preferred for cleaning steel.

Either one will be fine, they are both softer than the steel barrel. I rarely find that I need to use anything more aggressive than the nylon brush and Hoppes 9.

By the way, congrats on a terrific gun.

Id use the brash brush, just remember go through the chamber side.

But I don't use rods/brushes anymore. Go spend $20 on a Hoppe's Boresnake. Just spray some powder blast down the barrel and run the boresnake through. If you have a gun that is difficult or tedious to disassemble, you can just open the bolt and run the Boresnake through.

Hoppe's Boresnake is the best cleaning tool I have ever purchased.
