anyone know why the sudden explosion in popularity? dont get me wrong! i LOVE my XD45 but recently the XDM has been getting tons of press and popularity.

anything besides a stainless slide make this a better weapon?

Supposedly it has a better trigger and a slimmed-down slide. I don't know if the extra price is justified though.

Also added a match grade barrel, different back strap inserts and the XD-M now holds more rounds (I believe the XD-M 9mm holds 19+1 now). I recently shot my friends and really liked the feel of it.

There is a lot of hype. See the latest NRA Mag for an example.
1. The latest versions are geared closer to what the gun-games players need/want: speed, accuracy & capacity.
2. The trigger has been improved--shorter reset.
3 The SST match grade longer barrel is an improvement for some.
4. Neat new stamp on the slide

XDM the M is for merchandising hole lotta news for the new gun 19+1 is correct for the 9 I here there nice but not half as nice as there press agent.

it's basically a gamers' XD. fwiw, i shoot with a guy who used an xd-40 in limited... then got an XDM in 40. he got rid of the XDM...

basically, capacity was all he got out of it. backstraps, the regular XD was fine, so he didn't benefit from that. accuracy, it was on par with his XD. durability... he didn't like how some of the guts were shaved to a minimum like the trigger bar, etc. the trigger.... while better out of the box, it's still nothing a gamer wouldn't toss out for aftermarket.

so.... basically only reason a gamer would upgrade from a normal XD is to get the capacity, and/or if they really needed the backstrap.

it's a good alternative to all the glockers and double stackers out there.

When I saw SA had done a full wrap-around cover on G&A a full months back, I thought I had recieved an XD catalogue. Nope, just heavy marketing. Seems like a nice enough gun though, I liked the original XD's.

I have the M in .40 and I didn't see that big of a difference until I shot it side by side with a 4" Service Model in .40. There is a difference in feel, and it's pretty accurate. Now I need a .357 Sig barrel for it. Also, it's not just a gamer's gun. It's no larger than a full size 1911, and with 16+1 of .40 and a reload, if that's not gonna do the job, I don't need more ammo. I need backup.

A gamer, as in video gamer? I bought the XDM9 as my first handgun because I liked the feel, capacity, and looks. The added cost was worth it to me, if it's not for you don't buy one. Plus all the extras including four mags was a nice bonus. As for games, I play Sorry with my kids.

M is for CROATIA.... duh

I can't believe all that talk and someone finally answered the question.... hahaha

M is for marketing?????

Match.... Match Grade

By the way I bought my two tone OD green XDM for $629 which I thought was a little overpriced until yesterday. AT BASS PRO THEY COST $739 and some change. Guy told me they have been going out like crazy. DoubleYouTeeEfff

forgive me, but wouldnt someone carrying a concealed handgun want a gun with more speed, accuracy and capacity?

yes, I own one...it is no 1911 (to me), but seems like a good solid gun.

A search for XDM would return many threads hashing this subject out.

I own an XD-40 subcompact and an XDM-40 bi-tone.

Here are most, if not all, of the differences between an XDM an an original XD: 3 interchangeable backstraps, higher magazine capacity (without widening the grip), slightly different ergonomics (tapered slide, wider sharper notches where your fingers grip the slide to rack it, lots more checkering or stipling on the grip), match grade barrel, slightly crisper trigger with a shorter reset (it feels awesome) slight serrations on the rear sight to help reduce glare, no trigger pull necessary to disassemble, and a slightly higher price tag. But I really like mine, it's extremely accurate, and as with all XD models, points naturally and feels great in the hand. The grip angle and width, dimensions, etc. honestly feel almost as good as a government 1911. I'm still under the 1,000 round count on mine, but I like it more and more each time I shoot it.

True, it has been hyped like crazy. But just because something gets a full spread in all the major gun rags and is hyped like crazy all over the internet doesn't mean it's just hot air. It does offer some slight but significant improvements over the standard XD and is a fine firearm.

I have the XD-45, The XD-M 9MM, and the XD-M 40, and those Ms beat them hands down in all departments. I also have a a taurus malinnimum in 40, and it is in no way as accurate as the M. You can get back on the target a lot faster, because of less muzzel flip.

i too thought it was alot of hype. But when i picked one up it just felt right in my hand. i am going to get one for no other reason that it fits my hand bettter than anything since my steyrs (no i do not own an original xd).

forgive me, but wouldnt someone carrying a concealed handgun want a gun with more speed, accuracy and capacity?

Depends on whether or not they sacrificed reliability to get the other traits. Guns set up for competition are not necessarily ideal for duty/defensive use and vice versa.

Is there some reason why a gun company would sell a gun with reduced reliability as the service weapon? I think not. The "M" series will replace the original XD. It's amazing how, after a company improves their product, that people will go so far as to say that "it MIGHT not be as reliable, because it feels better out of the box". Jeez.
