Hi everyone,I am new to this sight and a competitive shooter.Ifigure i would try this forum instead of general handgun forum because of the issues i am having.Anyway gun has been malfunctioning for about about 10 months ,it is 5 or six years old has 10,000 to 12,000 rounds through it.Before i send it to springfield i wanted to get some opinions on what people think it may be.I think it may be an extractor issue, but not sure.If you insert a mag with rounds in it and manually eject the rounds without firing them the slide will not close all the way stays open slightly. It hesitates to close and then it closes a fraction of a second later.Seems like it is getting hung up trying to return to battery. Also when i go to slide lock after emptying a mag,i put the new mag in drop the slide stop with my thumb and it fails to go all the way forward, stays open a little bit.Now if i take the mag out i just inserted the slide then closes on its own.As soon as i take it out it seems to close most of the time.Maybe it is the upward pressure of the mag spring pushing the rounds up to where the slide is having a hard time picking up the round and stripping it from the mag to chamber it.Also it ejects cases to where they are standing up vertically inside the gun.So what happens is i have an empty case that did not eject from the gun and a live round trying to come in behind it .it is a pain to clear and has already cost me a major idpa match.I am quite annoyed with this xdm.Really accurate but it has let me down. This does not happen all the time .I could shoot 2 or 3 matches with it and it could be fine, then out of the blue it happens.Does not always malfunction.I know if you have a bad extractor,if it does not catch the case rim properly it can cause it the slide to not close all the way..I am just not sure .The extractor seems a little rounded off.Claw is not as sharp as my newer xdm that has 200 rounds through it.Is there anyone who sells extractors for xdm?If so are they hard to put in?Any help on what people think it may be would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm certainly no expert, but have you ever replaced the recoil spring? It sounds like a weakened/worn recoil spring that may need replacing. That would be a simple fix to try. The gun is DEFINITELY broken in and should be butter smooth by now, so there shouldn't be any burrs to catch things.

Welcome to the site.

actually i forgot to mention that i tried my brand new recoilspring from my new gun and it still malfunctioned. Also happens with all the mags randomly.

I have no idea how those guns work, but I would look for a problem with a disconnector, or damage to the barrel end/slide, maybe some warping on the frame making the rails tight. Maybe some peening, or cracking at the locking block/barrel pivot bed.

What about the feed ramp?the slide not wanting to close i guess could have something to with that.maybe it needs to be polished.when chambering a round if there is a burr or something it coulprevent the slide from closing all the way.Any info from anyone could be helpful.I have a state championship match coming up and would like to win or place high.So to those of you who are reading this please send your feedback. My state match is coming up soon.I would like to solve the iissues by then. Thanks!

I have no experience with the XDM directly, but...

The most obvious place to start is always the ammo... has it been gauged? Is it short enough for that chamber? Is it making power factor? If it is factory, did you switch loads and then start having problems? If you haven't switched loads, did the problems start and continue out of the same factory case of ammo? Etc.

I had the same issue at one point with my M&P, and at the time I had an 11lb recoil spring with about 10k rounds on it. Replacing with a 13lb fixed it permanently. I've had issues in other platforms that were traced to not enough recoil spring also. In general, I've learned that trying to scrape the floor of recoil spring weight is not worth the risk of functional issues, so now I just go a pound or two over what is popular for the platform, and haven't had any recoil spring issues since. But if you have tried a new recoil spring, that isn't likely to be the issue.

If the XDM is like other modern striker platforms, you could probably replace every small part and spring in it for ~50 bucks. That shouldn't really be necessary at 12k rounds, but it could probably rule a few things out if you did that, and some of the springs might be due for it at that point anyway.

One more thing, if you are serious about competing, you need at least one backup gun for situations just like this. Usually I'm rotating about two; primarily; one for practice, and one for matches. The practice gun is my match backup gun. But I think I have a total of 6 copies in various states of assembly of my primary competition gun right now...

I shoot umc 115gr factory ammo..I may have to check every round before i fire them to see if there is some rounds out of spec.Like i said before when i rack the slide and let it go forward it stops right at the end and hesitates to close then it closes. You can see part of the round that has not chambered yet.So i would need a heavier recoil spring to make sure the slide goes all the way forward? So what would your best guess be as to how heavy?Hopefully thats all it is.The extractor does seem slightly rounded off,the claw on it is not as sharp as my new xdm, which i can clearly see,but whether it is rounded off to the point that it effects the function of the gun i do not know. What other springs and parts could i change?

A stock recoil spring.Could a heavier spring cause issues with the slide closing to fast and cause jams?I know it can"t be to light probably either. If i am having a problem with it closing sometimes it also seems that a lighter one may prevent it from closing all the way even more.Just not quite sure?I think factory spring is 18lb,
