One of the characteristics of the XDS 45 is that when hand racking the slide, I need to put a lot more force into in than other semi-automatics I own, otherwise the round can jam at the bottom of the feed ramp. Someone summed it up as "racking it like you mean it". I've only seen this while hand racking it, not using the slide release or while shooting it. Can anyone with the 9mm version tell me if you need to do so with that caliber as well or does it feed easier than the .45 version? An old wrist injury acts up from time to time, and when it does the 45 is not comfortable to shoot, so I'm considering picking up a 9.

I'm not too familiar with the XDS, but I do have an XDM and the slide is quite easy to rack on that pistol. Seems a bit easier to me than the G17 I have, not that the glock is difficult at all.

I think the 4.0 in 9mm has a fairly easy slide to manipulate. I haven't tried the .45, but the longer slide should help a little.

FWIW, I've tried both the Range Officer Compact in .45 and 9mm and the 9mm was much easier to manipulate.

TomJ, since you haven't really gotten any responses from owners, I'm gonna chime in.

I was going to yesterday and then I thought no, I don't have the 9mm version. I also have the 45 version like you. Just a tip, if you aren't using the overhand method to wrack the slide, you are likely having some troubles. It's the only way to manipulate that slide I've found that doesn't cause hang-ups. Try it if you haven't, though that won't help with shooting discomfort.

I imagine with a longer slide, and a 9mm recoil spring that the 9mm version would be a bit easier to work. However, If you have an old wrist injury that acts up, it may still be uncomfortable to shoot and manipulate. If it were me, I'd first try some lighter recoiling ammo in my 45 to see if that helps. If not, I'd try my darndest to find a range that has a 9mm XDs rental to try out, before purchasing one. You may find it still bothers your wrist anyway and then you've needlessly switched guns and cartridge.

The XDs 45 with the 3.3" barrel is a very stiff gun. By comparison to a full size XDm, it is pretty difficult to manipulate.

460kodiak,

My XDS 45 feeds HST's reliably, but does have issues with other SD ammo. Since I use HST's as SD ammo in it, it's not an issue, but I haven't found ammo with less recoil that works well with it.

I'm going to keep the 45 as I do like it and don't need to sell it to buy the 9, but was considering adding the 9. Before I spend the money I wanted to confirm whether the 9 had the same rack it like you mean it characteristic. I haven't tried the overhand method and will do so.

Question answered. I was talking to my neighbor, who picked up the 4.0 9mm. He let me cycle a couple of my carry loads through it (Cor-Bon 115 grain DPX and Underwood's 124 grain +P using Gold Dots) and it was fine. I went as far as riding the slide while feeding the ammo, and it fed everything without fail. With Springfield's 3 mags promotion going on, it looks like I'm going ahead with this.

Cool! Congrats man. Let us know how it shoots. I've been thinking about picking up a 9mm version. Carrying the XDs is so comfortable, I would like to have a backup on hand.

I'm picking it up early next week, and will be at the range that weekend. I found it for $480 out the door from a LGS. Now comes the hard part, making the kid in me wait a week and a half to shoot it.
