Hey guys just picked up my first XDS nine today shot 250 rounds of Speer gold.hollow points plus P. The last 50 rounds I had for light strikes which eventually I realized that the gun was out of battery thus resulting in the light strikes. Has anyone had A similar experience with this fire arm and it will a proper break-in alleviate this issue or should I ditch it?

If you're using decent factory ammo (not other people's reloads) no, that's not a "Break-In" issue. Did you buy the gun new?

It needs to go to Springfield for repair.

Probably just dirty enough to prevent the action from fully closing. Clean and lube the gun and shoot some more to see if the failure occurs again.

Remington Golden Saber Ammo

Cleaning should fix it. Different ammo, shorter bullet ogive may help. It wont contact the dirty chamber.

I had the same issue with my XDM 40 compact a couple of weeks ago. I gave it a good cleaning and shot it again Wednesday. The cleaning solved the problem.

Always clean and lube first if you didn't, and make sure especially that the chamber is clean and dry.

XD's are known for having short throats. Do the "plunk test" with the ammo you are using. (take the barrel out, and drop a round into the chamber. Then try to rotate the round in the chamber. If it doesn't freely rotate, chances are your bullet is contacting the rifling).

If you don't pass the plunk test, you need either different/shorter ammo, or have the throat reamed out just a touch.

Thanks straight from the gun dealer I went to the range. So it did have the factory grease. I cleaned her real good today. Going to put 1000 rounds of steel thru her to wear it in. Not used to these things I came from a sig p239.with over 3000 rounds and 0 malfuctions. : )

If it is a length issue with rounds in that chamber, cleaning will not fix it.

But if it was just gummed up with factory grease, which is very likely straight out of the box, then you are probably good to go now.

I noticed on my XDS 9x19 the extractor is a bit rough and the extractor spring is stiff.
I would also consider the loaded chamber indicator a suspect, mine broke.
Just my 2 cents.
I assume the ammo in question passed the plunk test?
I hope I don't get banned for this post. I'm sure it offended someone somewhere somehow

I wanna say there was a recent thread about another posters XDS possibly firing out of battery...

found it...

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=802051

might be a trend or possibly a bad batch of parts, etc.? Wonder if SA made any recent changes in manufacturing? course 2 is a pretty small sample size to draw a conclusion..

Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone have any experience with Springfield customer service?

I recently purchased a lightly used XDS .45 4.0, and it doesn't just eject the brass toward my face...it THROWS it. Like it cut my forehead and scratched the lens of my shooting glasses:what: I actually developed a flinch shooting it.

I contacted them to see what my options are to fix it. I understand that I don't have a warranty with it as I am not the original owner. I would just rather pay them to fix it since they manufactured the gun.

I sent them an email 4 days ago and haven't heard a thing back. Just curious if that's normal.

I've dealt with them a couple of times. Their service is outstanding. I'd call them. You'll get an immediate answer.

The 45 cal XDs manual states clearly that proper lube is essential with the XDs. It also states that limp wristing can cause this issue. I'm not saying you are limp wristing or that the same issues exist with the 9mm version. But before you worry too much, clean it, lube it up properly, firm up your grip if needed, maybe try some different ammo, and see what happens.

I had the same problem with my first XDS in .45 and after a few threads popped up about out of battery conditions, I found that pulling out the firing pin, cleaning it, and the slot in the slide where the pin sits solved my problems.

I was almost ready to give up on the thing. It was really frustrating. A lot of folks (at the time) said you had to use frog lube or something along those lines. The pin itself didn't look that dirty, but after disassembling and cleaning then putting back together, I've yet to have another failure. I carry an XDs routinely.

I've never used Springfield's customer service, but they seemed to have handled the massive XD-S recall in a timely and professional manner.

Thoroughly clean and do not lube the striker or the striker channel.
A light coat of lube in the rail channels on the slide.
A thin wipe of lube on the outside of the barrel.

That should be everything you need on the XDs.

That and hold on tight. The recoil spring on the XDs-9 is not the same power as the XDs-45 so you have a bit less slide return energy to chamber the next round. If you limp wrist it, it very well may not feed all of the way.

As per all these responses there are probably many causes. In the year 2000 I purchased a Smith CS45. Brand new it went out of battery on occasion. I checked the "innards" and discovered that Smith installed neoprene plastic rod tips. I ran into a Smith Rep. and he ordered me several metal rod tips with little springs attached. Never had another out of battery since the gun slide broke last August due to some recoil spring crimping apparently. I replaced the gun with a 9 Shield and had some out of battery which stopped after it broke-in.

One thing i learned about my XDs is you need to let the slide hit hard dont hold the slide let it slam
I believe the issue is happening while he is shooting, not chambering. But you are correct, you need to let it slam home to chamber a cartridge and avoid malfunctions.

UPDATE: Shot another 250 rounds through her today at the range and she performed flawlessly. Shot 100 rounds of Winchester f whitebox 115gr and 150 of Winchester forged (steel rounds). I did intentionally limp wrist and was able to to acheive 2 FTE. So otherwise Im happy with my purchase! Time to put night sites on her and make it my new EDC!

Glad to hear it! Hopefully it won't be a problem again.
