Okay, I have the 3" XD Mod 2 9mm in FDE. It is a super gun. Love it! However, I now feel the urge to complement it with a single stack firearm in 9mm. I currently carry the Mod 2 and the S&W J frame 642 on an alternating basis. I'd like to drop the 642 and just have it in the truck or nightstand.

Of the two, the XDS and the Shield, which would you go for and why?

I am not interested in the Glock 43 because I previously had a Glock 26 and did not "bond" with it. I "might" look at a Ruger LC9s Pro, but not sure about that.

I'd prefer the Shield. It not as square. Not quite as long for appendix carry. Its 4oz lighter for CC. It doesn't have anything extra on the trigger. I like the looks better. I have a M&Pc so there'd be some commonality.

But looking at the specs... it a toss up, really.

If I were you, Id probably go with the XDS since you already have them That is, unless you want something different. And it does come with the fiber optic sight which might be nice.

I had both and a j frame for pocket carry. I found a 1911 I just had to have. since I had three 9mm poly guns I decided one would go in a trade for the 1911. XDS, Glock 26 , or Shield? The XDS was a great carry gun but it went bye bye. Shield is my favorite CC gun of all time.

The shield doesn't have that goofy squishy grip safety...that's all it took for me.

Both are very good weapons, I've shot both and decided on the CDs 45 / 4.0 mainly because I got a better deal and it came highly recommended by a close friend.

My son carries an XDS in 9mm, nice gun. I like the Shield too but only shot one, never carried one.

Since you already own and carry an XD I would go with the XDS. I like to keep SD simple and the same. You already like the XD, I see no reason not to carry a second.

The Shield has better ergonomics for me so that would be my choice between the two.

The XDS feels great in my hand, as do all the XD guns. I'm primarily used to 1911's but shoot the XD line very well.

I'd prefer the Shield....It doesn't have anything extra on the trigger.
Except the two piece hinged trigger itself and oh that extra piece that sticks out the back to keep the trigger from being engaged unless the hinged trigger is pulled back far enough to allow the "safety" to slide up into the frame but yeah, other than that....

That is totally unnoticeable when gripping the gun properly but adds a layer of confidence when re-holstering if used correctly. Yeah, that thing.

If you are going to carry an ZDS, you may as well carry the 45. I have had both, and many other 9's and the 45 XDS doesn't have much more recoil, and you can add 3 different mags to get it up to 8 rounds of 45. That in itself is a good reason to carry it.
use the 5 round for carry and throw a couple 7 rounder's in your pocket.
It's like having a 1911. You may also want to look at the PPS which has the best trigger and 3 mag sizes.
All of the comparisons I have seen rate the PPS best over the rest including the shield. But after 45 years of carrying a gun, I may not be the one to ask.
After all it's your gun, so try everything and choose one.
Personally I still take my Glock 26 with 12+1 and a spare with me, about 1/2 the time along with a pocket gun.

+1 on the Shield I have 2 of the 9mm shields have not had any issues with
either of them

.

Neither of which have any influence on the reach to the trigger face where as the other type requires you to reach past the trigger face and past/over the trigger safety.

For those that have shorter fingers, that little bit of difference can make a big difference.

I'm going to be THAT guy, but look at the PPS. Shoots like a larger gun, but hides oh so well.

Shoot both then make your decision. All you are going to get here is personal opinion based on what that individual owns. I tried both and settled on the Shield because that is what felt best in my hand and I shot it the best of the two pistols. Once you shoot it, a Shield may feel totally wrong to you.

I almost got the shield but when I dry fired it there was quite a jump which changed the sight picture. I"m not sure how this would have effected the accuracy but I passed on the shield and got the XDS 3.3 9x19.
The accuracy of the XDS is adequate, one problem I have with it is the slide does not always lock back after the last shot is fired. Could be be the recoil spring is to stiff, I am still in the break in period.

Because you are familiar with the platform I would buy the XDs 3.3". I have a XD-45 and wanted a 9 single stack for my Wife and me for CC. I liked the XDs and she liked the Shield. The Shield fit both our hands better, was lighter, and was $100 cheaper. After 200 rounds I love the Shield! Easy to conceal, reliable, and tons of aftermarket accessories.
I like the grip safety of the XD guns, but I really wanted a manual safety on a striker fired pistol. I am very happy with the Shield.

Between those two I'd take the XDS, but I'd really rather have my Walther PPS M2

Do you shoot thumbs forward? Just wondering because I have the same issue and I'm 99% sure it's my thumb hitting the slide release under recoil.

Of the two I'd go with the Shield (in fact I did). But you mentioned the Ruger LC9s Pro - I would look harder at it. I now prefer the LC9s Pro to my Shield. It and the Glock 26 now are my CC.

I fiddled with one of the LC9s Pro's last weekend. I liked the trigger. The grip was a little small for me though.

I have carried the Xds 9 for the past couple of years. I love the way it carries, shoots and it's accuracy... HOWEVER... I would not recommend it. It will not chamber many self defense rounds like Hornady Critical Defense due to the short feed ramp. I was having to use FMJ ammo. And it only has 7 rounds.
So I just bought the S&W M&P 9c. Pretty much same size, weight, etc, but with a double stack mag, it carries 12 rounds and chambers all SD ammo.

Shield 9mm in an Alien Cloak 3.0 is my EDC. Like an American Express card, don't leave home without it.
