Does anyone know the recoil of XM8 compared to the M4?
Did it have the same spring recoil system or something different?

XM8 was based on the HK G36, which is a derivative of the AR180. Recoil would depend on weight and presence of a muzzle brake more so than the recoil system design.

Actually I own a XM8 that was converted from a SL8. The barrel on mine is short but still has the heavy SL8 profile. I would say the recoil between it and my Colt M4 carbine with a 16 inch barrel is comparable. I dont note a difference in felt recoil. The XM8 is more front end heavy than the M4. Ditto for the G-36, I have a couple Tommy Built T36 clones of the 36, both E and C models.

Pretty cool! I figured the XM8 only existed on the covers of movies and video games.

If you get your hands on a HK SL8 Tommy Bostic can convert if for you but you will spend a lot in the process and wait a while. Its not unheard of to spend between $5K and $7K to do this. Warning once you start down this path its addicting. I have two of Tommy's T36 clones too, also not inexpensive.

Forgotten weapons did a pretty good three video series on the gun.

And the base gun you need for the conversion to XM8.
