I loaded up some XTP's to the recommended COL of 1.075. At the range several failed to load. They hit the feed ramp and stopped right there. It seem like either the feed ramp needs more of a gentle angle or the bullets need to be more rounded. The gun is a S&W M&P 9 Pro.
Would changing the COL help or does this gun just not like the XTP's?

I don't know but it seems like the thing to try since you have the gun and have the bullets. Load them as long as will chamber freely; which may not be very long what with the truncated conical shape of the XTP.

That is what takes you from the recipe hunt of reloading to real handloading.

I would try loading some dummies at different lengths with those bullets and try them. You can always pull them if you find what you're looking for. Although it may just be that you need a different bullet. That is part of the handloading experience. Just because the bullet works in one gun consistantly doesn't mean it will in another gun. That's why we need to test plenty of the ammo that we intend to carry in the gun as you need to be damn sure it will feed reliably in all instances.

Who recommends 1.075" for those? Sounds a little short.

I've always loaded mine closer to 1.125, in the vain search for a bit more accuracy on the rifle-style theory of getting closer to the lands.

Grump,

1.075 sounds right for a 115 gr jhp.

I think the taper crimp might be your problem. like was mentioned.

I got this from Hodgdon's site on line reloading data

115 GR. JHP Winchester WSF .355" 1.169" 5.2 1095 28,700 PSI 5.7 1165 32,100 PSI

They show 1.169" as OAL.

FROM closer examination, of Hornady's site. WE MUST KNOW which bullet he is using. 115, or 124, or 147. Makes a big difference on OAL.

Yesterday I had a little free time and really had time to think and investigate the problem...............Well, I had a mag that was assembled incorrectly. It had been working fine with RN for some time. I corrected the problem and went to the range. 50 rounds of the 115 gr XTPs fed just fine. Yeah, I feel like a fool. Sorry for the trouble but thanks for the advice!

I three years ago I looked at and measured the Hornady Custom 9mm factory ammo in 115, 124, 147. As the weights when up so did the overall length. All three have feed fine in the XD9C. I could measure them if you wish.
