Yesterday went out again:evil:

Got a cold steel blackthorn cane for $5
A grafite fishing rod for $1, and brand new, never worn, tags still on, steals toe work boots for $10.

The blackthorn fit perfectly and I will be training with it. Watch out bad guys, this geezer ain't an easy mark.;)

Great finds! You're really getting to be the savvy shopper of the yard sale circuit!

Back story on the cane was interesting.
Belonged to an Army LTC, and his widow was downsizing to move to senior housing. I offered more but she said no, it was a knockoff he got in Korea and didnt use often. She showed me the one she is keeping - a custom made, tastfully carved, teak or mahogony with a brass head, beautiful.

Some years back I made a short walking stick for my Dad (retired after 28 years Corps of Engineers...) with an eye on it being as lightweight and durable as possible - in case it was needed for defensive purposes... I took a very heavy action fiberglass rod blank (wall thickness more than 1/16") and cut the butt end down to walking cane length, added a hard foam handle with short lanyard and an epoxied on crutch tip for the ground contact end. Every last part of it was black so you couldn't tell without examination just what it was made of... Fortunately it was never needed for anything other than a walking stick and I wish I had it after he passed away...

Before that stick he kept a three foot section of heavy, green bamboo at his front door for similar purposes and claimed that it was also nearly un-breakable but very quick in hand - and that anyone with a bit of practice would be able to strike an opponent more than a few times before they even realized just how serious things were going to get....

Now that I'm 70 myself - I might just build another one...
