Well, it's squirrel season. Squirrel season is how rednecks get vittles. Being rednecks, we as a family are always excited for squirrel season. Technically my wife does not eat these vittles but my daughters like them and they are one of my favorite meals. Here's some pics, we've been out 3 times so far and we've killed 13.

Today, my niece is visiting for the week and this was her first squirrel hunt. That's her on the right, she was quite pleased with the endeavor:

Nice pictures , you have a beautiful family . It is great that your girls like squirrel . You are bring up those girls right .

Awesome! Squirrel hunting is probably tied with grouse hunting for the most fun in my opinion. Looks like you all had a great time. I am jealous your squirrels are prettier in my opinion...

Nice work dad! How do you prepare your squirrel?

I dredge pieces in a mixture of approximately:
1 cup flour
1 cup bread crumbs
1 tsp salt (possibly more, to taste)
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp black pepper

Then I brown the pieces in oil of some sort. My mom always used canola oil, I prefer olive oil or olive oil with bacon grease.

Then I put into a covered baking pot and bake at 350 degrees for 90 minutes.

Best served with mashed potatoes and gravy made from residual oil during the browning process.

wankerjake,

do you leave the bones in when you cook the squirrel in some kind of oil and before you bake for 90 minutes? I have heard of people who leave bones in and put in crockpot.

also how do you freeze these if you do freeze them?

Looks good and you have a beautiful family.

Jrdollal: Good luck today!

Blueridge: Yes I leave the bones in. I'm too lazy to try and strip it all off the bone before hand plus I like eating off the bone and that way I get it all.

Rabbits being a little bigger I sometimes cut meat off the bone and make hasenpfeffer. I use this recipe and it is outstanding:

Thanks guys for the compliments.

Great lookin family, great lookin day, great job dad!

You've motivated me to get out and do a little squirrel hunting...that dinner looks awesome!

wankerjake cooks squirrels same way I do. So far this year, my buddy and I have killed 30-35 of them. Good eating!!

That sure looks good .

This is my first year squirrel hunting. My girlfriend's dad is big into it. He asked me to go out with him one weekend, and I'm officially hooked. Here's the first one I got this season.

We hunt with shotguns, but a .22 is on my short list. Would make life a little easier with these things. We have a couple air rifles, but I'm not sure if they'd be powerful enough to humanely dispatch them.

Around here we have a nice mix of deciduous and evergreens so our preferred hunting involves a small group of folks with an assortment of weaponry. Usually a 20 ga shotgun and a 22 rifle are a great pair, but when I'm all alone I go 22 mag revolver with 12 ga. That stops them from running into sinkholes as bad, and if they don't run they are usually easier to find.

Handsome squirrels that you have there. Looks like the kids are learning to do it right. I still go after squirrels to keep in touch with the reason that I still do this.
