Guys,

I joined Extreme Tactical shooting range yesterday. I had a great time shooting out there. Patrick, owner, is a great guy! Very helpful. I can tell you that shooting past 600 yards is extremely challenging! Especially if you don't have a spotter! It was the first time I've shot past 600 yards. I was able to hit the target out to 900 yards but it got a whole lot harder at 1000 and 1200 yards! The range was a little green and I couldn't see my misses at 1000 and 1200 yards therefore there wasn't anything to adjust off of.

I have to confess reading the wind was incredibly challenging! It was real gusty and even with my scope it was tough trying to read the wind down range.

I have a great rifle and scope what else do I need to be able to consistently shoot out to 1200 yards?

I have a Custom 6.5 Creedmoor topped with a March 5-40X56. The rifle is a real shooter. I've shot 5 rds inside .4 at 100 yards. I'm pretty sure in the hands of an expert it'll shoot .25 5 shot groups.

This is something that shooters with long range ambitions don't think of in advance.
I have not shot farther than 500 yards except on a fully equipped range with target pits and markers in the pits. If anybody is clear off the backer, there is usually an experienced shooter to get behind him and watch the "trace" of the bullet toward the target and make corrections.
Anything from 200-500 has usually been against a limed berm with a spotter.

What is the setup at ol Patrick's place?
Can you set up a BIG target and position a target camera to spot your shots? There are several brands of those now and if I get back into Long Range I will definitely have one. Less expensive than a good rifle scope.

You can enter your muzzle velocity and ballistic coefficient into a trajectory program and get in the ballpark. Since you have been on at ranges from 100 to 900, you can refine the calculated values to get come-ups for 1000 and 1200.

ammo and practice mostly. it sure is fun, huh?

a ballistic calculator is helpful. you can use jbm on the internet for free, or buy something to run on your phone
a shooting mat is handy
a kestrel 4000+ is a huge help. it will help you learn to read the wind and also tell you
DA
a range finder is a necessity if you get away from KD ranges
a chronograph is pretty useful too
dope cards, mil-dot master, etc
a spotting scope if you are going to shoot with friends. (you can get by with your scope, but a spotter is way easier)

i have way too much junk

A spotter with a good scope or remote camera is great help. I happened to wrap up a session at the range and a guy was trying to sight in his elk rifle but couldn't see where his was hitting. Instead of packing my scope I spotted for him.

Bring your rifle out to jacob's plain gun club on a weekend. Send me a pm and I will meet you out there. ETSS is nice, but jpgc is on a different level. It's not crowded, everyone shoots from one line, and they have 4 different shooting lanes from 400 out to 1100 yards.

What separates JPGC from the other local ranges is the shooting lanes. You really have to pay attention to the wind, because it will change from one lane to the next.

Simply practice with a purpose in any and all conditions. You would be surprised that many people won't shoot in windy, rainy, cold or hot days.

ballistic calculator - I've been using Hornady's ballistic calculator and it seems pretty dead on out to 900 yards but I've been told I should get one for my iPhone, a better one
shooting mat - got it
kestrel 4000+ - ugh...need it, but wow it just keeps getting more and more expensive!
range finder - I've got one, Bushnell, but I don't really think it'll work too well beyond 6-700 yards.
chronograph - got one
dope cards - need these
mil-dot master - ?
spotting scope - need one but don't want to waste money on one. Need to understand these a little better. My rifle scope is awesome and if I buy a spotting scope I definitely want it to perform at a higher level than my riflescope.

Great advice! Any recommendations on spotting scope?

^Yup. When I see a light rain, first thing that comes to my mind is RANGE TRIP! Because I'm sure to be the only one out there.
