Stephenson County officials in September 2008 will likely debate whether to adopt a resolution urging the Illinois General Assembly to authorize a concealed carry law in this county.

Such a law would allow county residents who obtain a permit to possess concealed weapons. Winnebago County is pursuing similar legislation, which inspired County Board Chairman John Blum to introduce the issue at the Aug. 5, 2008, County Public Property and Safety Committee meeting.

“It will be a topic at next month’s Public Safety Committee meeting,” Blum said. “I’m sure there will be a lot of debate.”

At the Aug. 5, 2908, committee meeting, Blum passed out copies of a sample resolution being considered by the Winnebago County Board that seeks to establish a concealed carry law in Winnebago County. It is unclear how closely the Stephenson County resolution will resemble Winnebago County’s proposed document.

This is Stephenson County, next west of Winnebago County.

They've got a chance, however tiny of succeeding. More importantly they are now on record as wanting CC, so the ridiculous arguments from anti-gun figureheads about allowing communities to govern themselves will be shown false and hollow should they try to defend the eventual easing of illinois/cook county laws on firearms.

Oh. Maine only has a few counties, I didn't realize a state as small as illinois would have a hundred or more counties in it.

But look at how narrow it is! I suppose it is probably about the same overall size as Maine, or a little bigger, but we only have I think six counties!

I hope more of the counties hop on board, this could be a pretty big step for illinois.

Illinois is 400 miles long. Plenty of room.

Lee, you have to remember to most people from out of state (and many in state) Illinois is only Cook, McHenry and Lake Counties. I once had an older couple get off the interstate, flag my squad car down and ask; "Officer, how long have we been in KY?" I told them they had another 100 miles to drive to get to Kentucky.

NG IV,
Illinois is 57,918 square miles in size, 25th largest state geographically . Maine is 35,387 square miles in size, 39th largest state geographically.

Jeff

I sure hope they get this passed, I hate visiting family in Illinois and having to worry about getting caught with a loaded weapon in the car.

Nothin' but corn fields out there. :banghead:

Greetings from the howling wilderness. (Actually, there are coyotes around.)

The easy way to avoid that is to obey the law in Illinois. its easy to transport it legally in Illinois.

Yes, Jeff, but you forgot that people know geography from the Media Filter. Illinois as a Midwestern state is thus very small.:D

As someone who has been going to Boston for over 12 years, I can tell you, they only know what the media tells them:

"Oh, you're from Indianapolis. That's very small town."
"Ummm, no, we are twice as many people as Boston and 4 times the size."
*Scooby Do look*

I swear ECE do not believe that anyone lives between New York City and L.A. It's just bison, apple orchards and soybeans, and the occassional roving zombie who tends the apple orchard.:D

I like how no counties in Central or Southern Illinois have resolutions under consideration. From a line from Tazewell County south, the rest of Illinois assumes a CCW provision exists.:D "Chicago? Where's that?":D

I know what you're saying, but you can't really compare Indy and Boston. It's kinda an apples and oranges thing. You see, as you mentioned, the actual city of Boston is very small. It's something like 80 sq miles, half of which is water. Only ~600k people, versus Indy's ~800k people. However, Indy has *9* times the land mass of Boston. Obviously the population density is going to be WAYYYY higher in Boston.

Not only that, but since Boston is so tiny, the "Greater Boston" urban area is a better indicator of how many people live here. The people living in the urban area of Greater Boston is roughly 4.5million at last check, compared to ~1.2 million in the Indy urban area.

So you see, folks that live around here referring to Boston are generally referring to the entire heavily populated city area. It's just the nature of the beast, being such an old city and design it can't be compared to a 200 year (or something like that) younger city unless you look at the bigger picture.

There are actually three things going on of note.

First is the resolution in support of the second amendment. it started in way southern Illinois and sort of worked its way north. So far 83 of 101 counties in Illinois have signed on the the resolution. Its under consideration in a few more, and a few have either refused to bring it to a vote or voted it down (five I think).

The second thing going on is the advisory referendum on CC. That started in Winnebago county (Rockford). County boards can put advisory referendums on the ballot for just about anything. There are just a few so far. Thats what you are seeing here.

The third thing is a serious effort (again started in Winnebago County -God bless the brave souls on the county board) to bring CC to a specific county, presumably under home rule authority. I am not real sure this is going to fly, but with Blago and Emil Jones on the ropes, and the RINOS completely disorganized, you never know what might happen in the legislature if a couple dozen counties vote thumbs up to a CC referendum, advisory or not.

One of the guys spearheading the thing has a gun raffle going on to support his election campaign.

A truly evil black rifle is the first prize. And some portion of the raffle proceeds goes to support illinoiscarry.

Emil's retiring.
Before or after the federal indictment?
Might be a race to see what happens first. One rumor has him resigning shortly after the election so democratic party officials can appoint his son to take his place.

And as a bonus, this is truly a grass roots effort. The NRA has put nothing into it and the ISRA has been pretty tepid about it. Every other state where something good has happened it has been because locals got into the fight and did something.

Ogle county is working on it also. Their board passed (21-1) a resolution that asks the state to place a concealed carry referendum on Illinois' November ballot.

They're not yet working on a county CCW permit system......yet.
