Hi, everyone. I'm intent on getting an M1 Garand in the near future. Unfortunately, I was a little too late in doing my research, as I see that CMP is completely out of stock with Garands until October of 2007.

Seeing as how I can't wait until October of 2007 (since, if I'm reading correctly, CMP will be taking orders, but won't actually ship until much later), I have some questions for The High Road readers.

Oh, and before I start sounding like a total idiot/newbie, I should preface everything by saying that I have completely lost patience in waiting for CMP to get more Garands. In other words, it would give me more satisfaction to have a Garand in the next few months, rather than wait until October to place my order, wait for CMP to deliver the rifle, then send it back in to specialists to get the gun fine-tuned.

Here goes.

After reading up on previous posts, I understand that the "new" Garands (manufactured and sold by Springfield Armory) are made from "cast" receivers. Since the CMP Garands are made from original (what's the word for "non-cast"?) receivers, they will hold their value over the long run. Therefore, I'm looking for a Garand with an original receiver.

So far, everyone's previous posts have led me to two places:
1. The Garand Guy, and
2. Fulton Armory

Let's assume (in a fantasy world) that money was not an issue. If I'm reading things correctly, do both of these companies sell Garands with the original receivers? Has anyone dealt with either of these companies to acquire their Garands? Because price will definitely be an issue, is it worth it to go through The Garand Guy, since I can save almost $500 on a Garand that is just as good as the one from Fulton Armory?

As much as I'd love to conduct an exercise in patience and wait many months to get a CMP Garand, I just don't think I can do it considering how I'll have to: (1) wait to get the CMP Garand, then (2) send it right back to someone to fine-tune it, then (3) wait for that specialist to finish up, then (4) wait to get it back.

Any help or direction would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Buy one at a gun shop. The one near me has three CMPs for sale. They cost $300 more than from CMP but you don't have to wait. I bet if you call around and scan the on line ads (Guns America) you will find one.

BTW- Mine did not require any fine tuning. My service grade shoots right into the ten ring at 100 yards once I learned how to shoot it.

I've bought three reasonably priced nice Garands on the Gunboards forum. They pop up from time to time, and all three had CMP paperwork.

ETA, USGI Garand receivers are machined from forgings.

Garand Guy

I also missed out on the CMP Garands. Based on what others here had said I ended up ordering a "Super Premium Grade" M1 Garand from GarandGuy.com . He was very helpful on the phone even though it was obvious I had no idea what I was talking about. His prices start at $795 and that includes a new stock, everything checked out, and a 1 year guarantee. Based on what I saw some of the recent CMP rifles going for at the local Gander Mountain I don't think it is a bad price.

Mine should be here tomorrow, can't wait.

I don't think i would of paid 700 for a M1 before i fired one. But after firing one and handling it i can say without a shadow of a doubt if i was in the market to buy one today, i would be more then happy to buy one from The Garand Guy. His prices are good for what you get, a near perfect condition M1. Dont mind the fact its more expensive then CMP because one you cant get one there anymore, and two it was 500 for a service grade from CMP and to spend 200 more to get the Garand Guy package is well worth it.

Also worth mentioning is the Buy/Sell on this forum, it took me 4 months to find the Browning High Power in good used condition with everything i wanted and it was well worth the wait. By the way there were other BHP's but they were all sold before i sent am email saying i wanted. So check often.:D Like 1-3 times a day

Ps Good Luck In Your Hunt

SigFan said it, the original receivers were forged to shape, then machined to final shape/dimensions and heat-treated.

Technically, when done right, an investment-cast receiver can be as strong and durable as a forged. But if the process isn't carefully controlled, if the wax the mold is made from isn't perfect, if the final machining isn't done right... then you've got problems.

Here's an ad off the CMP forum for what sounds like a nice one.
Disclamer:
I have no association with this seller, know nothing about him, your on your own!

I'm selling my latest build project to make room for other interests. Started as CMP reparked WWII receiver SA 3793784 (5/45), added new CMP Criterion USGI spec barrel, finish reamed and headspaced to a NOS USGI 12-SA bolt, NOS USGI gas cyl, arsenal refinished 6-SA op rod w/ new piston, excellent 65-SA trigger group with crisp 2-stage trigger pull, NM rear sights, ex+ or NOS small parts, and topped off with a CMP cartouche black walnus stock with tight lock-up. Pics at GunBroker #71132281. Asking $879. I'll swap an excellent post-war rear sight set if you want it to be JCG Match eligible. First "I'll take it" gets it. Mention CMP Forum and I'll pay the shipping.

As Titan said, you may not have to tune it any no matter where you get it.
I got a Dane FG and Greek FG that I took to a Garand clinic where we were taught to shoot at 200 yards. Now I can barely see the target at that distance, but neither rifle had a problem putting the bullet where I aimed it.
The only problem was my aiming. These were straight from the CMP with no tuning. I would look around locally and see if you can find one in good shape and take it to the range. You may be very surprized.

Good Luck

Not only that but the word I have heard is that the receivers are mady by Hesse Arms.......for Springfield. I have heard that from TWO reputable builders.....

aspree,

Tony Giaccobi, aka Garand Guy, has a good rep among M1 shooters and collectors. He'll get you a good rifle...

Best regards,

Thank you all for your knowledgeable input.

I never thought about checking out the buy/sell forums, so I'll browse around there for a bit. But I'm probably going to end up going with The Garand Guy. He seems to have a great reputation and his prices aren't that bad in the large scheme of things.

Agreed. My Super Premium is a beautiful piece of work, I'd deal with Tony again in a heartbeat. The gas cylinder has a 'slight' bit of play in it and it shoots (with my eyes) about a 4 inch group at 100 yds. with the Greek surplus.
