"You get caught with a firearm, you're dismissed from the football team"

Reid - I have had a couple friends who were cheerleaders here at UM for the football team. Real cuties too.

I know one of them just graduated and is working I think as a news anchor somewhere down here (Haven't seen her on TV though).

The other is just finishing up school because during being a cheerleader she fell from the top of one of those pyramid things and shattered her leg. Took her some time to recover and I get the impression she's still in pain a good 2 years later.

Cheerleading is dangerous stuff.

OT - I actually have found some of the cheerleaders are pretty bright girls. Too bad they're taken. ;)

It wouldn't be a problem if the team didn't recruit criminals to play.

I'm sorry I meant juvenile delinquents.

Most if not all, of these students involved in the shooting incidents, can't legally posess a firearm anyway, and its unlikely that any who are caught carring have a permit to do so, so they are already breaking the law.

University of Delaware had 3 or 4 football players who were arrested for commiting armed robberies last year, all of them had prior arrest records.

NEWARK - Three University of Delaware football players were arrested and charged with breaking into an off-campus apartment, holding two students at gunpoint and robbing them.

A fourth student who is not a member of the team was also arrested in the early Sunday home invasion.

Police said the four masked men forced their way into the apartment early Sunday. While one held a shotgun to the head of a 20-year-old male student and another held a 19-year-old female student at gunpoint, the others ransacked the apartment.

At least two of the suspects were unmasked, allowing the victims to identify them as football players, police said. Police and university officials declined to release the names of the victims, although the sports department described the man as a freshman walk-on member of the team.

Arrested were sophomore linebacker Demetrice Alexander; sophomore running back Danny Jones; and junior defensive back Jeff Robinson. The fourth suspect, Tyrone Heggins, is a senior at the university. All four were being held without bail Monday on charges including armed robbery and burglary.

The three players were suspended from the football program, the university said Monday. Expulsion proceedings were begun for all four students by the campus Office of Judicial Affairs.

"The University is very concerned about the alleged actions of these students,'' Cynthia Cummings, associate vice president for campus life. "This action will remain in effect until the charges are dismissed or until the students are acquitted of the charges.''

The three football players played for the Blue Hens last season in reserve roles, according to the sports department.

btw - while slightly OT

I did find a 9mm shell casing lying on the sidewalk on campus yesteerday. This was at UM btw.

Didn't know what to make of it. Called public safety just to make sure there hadn't been any reports of somebody discharging a weapon on campus..... there hadn't, so I just figured somebody kept on from a range or something and dropped it by accident.

Tossed it out.

Thats ludicrous. So any "authority" type figure in your life can keep you from exercising your rights? So my boss can say "we have a vested interest in our employees. They are not allowed to own guns or fast sports cars."\

Does that seem right. Considering the above "logic" it would seem so. How about this: "If you post a message about why we should or shouldn't be in Iraq you will be kicked out of our university." Is that also correct thinking?

Remember I know whats right for you. You MUST do as I say. Its for your own good and protection.

Freedom isn't always easy. If it were my school, anyone that had a CCW card could carry. If it were my company, and I were the owner, the same would hold true. However, it's not my school, and I didn't make the rules. These football players have the right to not play football for that school.

In Florida, any boss can fire any employee. The only time an employee can make a case for improper treatment is if that employee can PROVE discrimination based on race, age, or sex. If you work for a company that passes a "No Sports Car" rule, and you're here in Florida, you have a choice to make. Job, or Car. Has nothing to do with "right and wrong", or "logic", or "justice". Has everything to do with the Golden Rule... as in "He who has the gold makes all the rules".

At the risk of sounding repetitive... Freedom isn't always easy.

Eco-

Good for her . Beats the alternatives . A common theme through my youth was "You're gonna kill yourself on that thing ! " The pat response is " There are many fates that are much worse than death ." or " I can do a lot worse than kill myself "

It all boils down to the costs to our society , do we really need to have children manufacturing* death pyramids in our schools ? This could make good fodder for some street theatre , when fake cheerleaders show up for a real football game . Fat guys with three day beards in miniskirts always draws a crowd

* constructive intent applies

I never really understood what it was they liked about it..... but whatever. I didn't give them a hard time.

I figured they were very friendly to me and seemed to be good friends, so what they do with their time is their business.

Kinda like how if I go to a shooting range on my time, I'm sure there are plenty of people who would say that I'm risking getting shot..... whatever. Everybody has their thing, if there is a moderate level of risk involved, so be it - all that really matters is that everybody enjoys their passion and goes for it.

Hey - I've done worse. Another passion of mine is juggling. I juggle fire and machetes all the time. To date I've never gotten injured, but the possibility exists.

So long as it doesn't put ME at risk or harm me (and is legal) - I just say live and let live.

The girls knew what they were doing... accidents happen..... I don't even think the one who shattered her leg regrets being a cheerleader - I think she just regrets that she can't STILL be a cheerleader.

Here's an update:

Turns out that most of the players live in the dorms - so that of course would prohibit having a firearm.

Of the ones who don't, many have their apartment paid for by the University - so technically that makes it an extension of a University dorm also prohibiting posession on "school grounds".

So far that seems to be the rationale for this. I'll keep looking.

I mean - bottom line - the majority of the players are schmucks that I wouldn't trust with guns.... but still the 2A is the 2A.

Oh yeah and lastly - most are under 21 (ding ding)

I will continue to look into this.

Re-read the article. Although the coach (Randy Shannon) made claimed obviously false statistics, most of the idiotic, grammatically challenged statements were made by one of his players (Brandon Meriweather), not the coach himself.

Oops, my bad...
