Takeing a big walk in closet or maybe a smaller linen closet and turning it into a safe. I was told buy a former collector he had 1600 guns at one time and that was his retirement. He sold all but 20 of the ones he wanted for hunting and gave each of his children 5. He said it was basically a room in his house with no windows, air conditioned and dehumidified and had a regular door on the outside but a giant safe door on the inside. Well he auctioned the guns off and then headed south and said it was quite a hard bit to sell to the new owners of the house haha they were probly like umm . I mean it really wouldnt be that hard to take a closet and install a hurricane door or something with a metal frame and install maybe a fingerprint reader so YOU and only YOU have acess to your prized possesions. Id opt for a concrete reinforced addition to a house specifically made to be this "Giant Safe". Anyone else had this dream or have seen something like this? maybe some day ill post up pics for all to see

i dont think he has 1600 guns, but he has more than i can count! it's the kind of thing that is utterly absurd, and totaly rational at the same time. trust me, the first time you see this kind of thing in person, dont be supprised if you need a mop to clean the drool from the floor.

a guy my dad works with had an extra closet in his basement put in when the house was being built he doesnt have a vault door but hes got fire proof sheet rock and a fire proof door and it is pretty sweet

When i had my house plans drawn up I had a room like that put in them. In mine I will have a normal room with some way to hide the safe door, still have not figured that part out. It will be 12' x12' and will basically be under the front porch. I will have a fully functional basement with a gun room hiding behind the middle bedroom wall. Just waiting till the wife gives the go ahead so we can start building.

I installed a number of "safe rooms" when I was doing the "interior defense" training business in SoCal. We would strengthen the walls, put a heavy duty door in place with BIG dead bolts on it, run a separate phone line in, battery powered lights and ventilation and gun racks. The phone line was spliced into the main line out at the property line and came into the house via metal water pipe.

That idea was turned into a vault for guns and jewelry more than once. The metal sheathing on the ceiling was always a b*%ch, because of zoning.

One city zoning inspector insisted that we have a water sprinkler system, because residential wasn't zoned for Halon. The gun owner was not particularly pleased.

I dont see what zoning has to do with what type of ceiling is in a room, nor whether or not you had any type of fire protection system. They do sell portable halon systems.

In my plans for the dream house, I have an extra room on the basement, kind of an add on 12' by 15' for my home office. The plan is to have it hard wired for phone, internet, cable. Poured walls. I plan on using a steel door. It will be my office and gun room, the kind of room where I can display my guns on the walls and not have them locked in a safe, becasue the rrom will be my safe.

Alll I have to do is get rich first...
