For everyone who thinks 22LR cant do anything to a big animal, well i actually killed a bear once on a camping trip before.. i had a ruger 10/22 with a Holographic sight and a 50 round MWG magazine. i loaded the mag with 2 types of bullets witch were Winchester's ultra high velocity hollowpoint rounds and Fiocchi's soft point rounds rounds. So the mag went like Hollowpoint, Softpoint,Hollowpoint, Softpoint, ect.. until the mag was full. anyway i was in the tent with my girlfriend and we had a fire lit a few feet away. then i heard a loud movement outside so i opened up the tent and seen a bear about 10 feet away.. so i immediately grabbed my rifle scared as hell, and yelled to my girlfriend if the bear gets any closer im unloading on it for both of our saftey. we also made the mistake and kept food inside out tent..so the bear did start to move close and i unloaded about 20-25 rounds towards the bear until it dropped. the first few rounds [about 5~] made the bear roar witched scared both of us deleted -- <Sam> and caused me to put another 20~ rounds into it until it fell.. i hit it in the head about 7 times and shot and his him in his chest area about 9 times..and with my sights still aimed at the bear i cautiously approached the bear and put another round into his head just incase. i didnt get in any trouble with the law because i was justified in shooting the bear, so i dont want to hear anything about that.

In other words, a 22LR with the right ammo and good shot placement can defiantly save you life. always bring a weapon when going camping.

Not discounting the premise that a .22 can be fatal to anything in the right circumstances, but something like this would have made the news somewhere, and searches yield nothing. Perhaps a link to a newspaper story is in order?

my grandfather used to shoot deer in the head with his trusty 22. he sat in the tree stand and waited till they walked past. put it right between the ears about 3 or 4th vertibra (round about area) dropped them right there. his reasoning was so that he didnt spoil meat, or have to track it. he has also dropped many a raccon and coyote out to 100 yards with it. in the right hands, there just as good as a bigger cartridge. now, im not saying its pefect, but just as good.

Did you really tell your girlfriend that you were unloading on the bear 'for both of our safety'?

Just thought id put my 0.2c in, i know a bloke who lived in South Africa as a child and he had a .22 bolt rifle scoped and silenced and he used to shoot deer( antelope, springbok etc ) and he said if you can get in range and place the shot between the eyes at the base of the eyes if hat makes sense and another place is on one side or another behind the head. And he did this on a regular basis so alot of it has to be true :D LandieLover

According to "Into the Wild," by Jon Krakauer, the protagonist Christopher McCandless dropped a moose with his Nylon 66 (i think that was what he had). Unfortunately, he died from eating poisonous berries that resembled edible ones.

So yes, big game can be taken with .22lr. You just have to be lucky in your shot or unload on them.

I once asked about .17 HMR on feral pigs, because I had heard people bragging about it. I got laughed at by some d-bags on here when I was just asking a question because I had heard some people mention it.

As a kid,I made some awsome shots while small game hunting.I have moved up to .22mag and although the price is higher,I found Fiocchi for less than 8.00 a box delivered
[TGA] ,and I just run the stuff thru it's paces in single six, sweet.

I was always told that when you encounter a bear while armed only with a .22, that you were supposed to shoot your hiking/camping partner in the leg and then run away.

:D

You did very well not to have just panicked. Well-done with the Ruger .22.

A Lee Enfield "Jungle Carbine" killed an adult grizzly with four bullets.
Just make sure that the mag spring is strong and the mag's feed lips are not bent.

Wish that I had the link to the account in Canada or Alaska.

Sigh more of this crap you come on the bears land. bringing all kinds of things that smell like good food to the bear. THEN when the bear comes the first thing you do is unload your 50 round magazine in to him. Here in PA we have name for people a lot like you......Flatlander

I smell bear... better start shooting.

I don't disbelieve your event. But I question whether or not you needed to shoot at all. 22LR is a pretty good caliber for camping regardless of what others say.

The entire story certainly seems possible I guess, but I think the lesson is not that .22 is capable of doing incredible things, but that bringing only a .22 into bear country is probably not the best plan.

Neither is, as pointed out by Peakbagger46, leaving food in the tent :)

~40-45 rounds fired at the bear and 16 hits tells me nothing about shot-placement or round efficacy.

Well, it tells me something, but probably not quite what the OP intended.

2 types of bullets witch were <snip> the bear roar witched scared both of us
Emphasis added.

Which bullets for spirit bear? Why, magic, of course! Hope the wicked witch of the west didn't charge you too much for 'em. :D

Couldn't help myself there.

"Bear Country" is starting to be just about the majority of the mountainous states and some not so hilly.

-What kind of bear was it?
-How big was the bear?
-When did this happen? Exact date would be nice.
-Where were you when this happened?
I think this sounds like BS but let's get some facts and see what happens.

On a side note what the hell are doing leaving a camp fire burn while your in a closed tent. <removed: TexasRifleman>. Your lucky you didn't burn the place down.

experienced a very similar event.
We had left some Peanuts in the tent ....

The beast charged .... and was pacified.
