If I remember correctly, he played a Japanese officer, no? Or was that one of the "Outer Limits" episodes he starred in?
Ive often wondered about the muzzle device fitted to Hanley's carbine-

it doesnt look like a blank-firing attachment. My Inland has a similiar thing brazed on-

Its only purpose I can fathom is as a crown protector- a function it certainly does well.
With regards to how the carbine Rick Jason used firing blanks; first, he actually used several carbines. This became accidentally obvious in one episode in which he was outside with a carbine WITH a bayone lug, walked inside having a carbine without the lug, and returned outside with the first weapon. Minor continuity flaw only a carbine nerd would see.
The guns were altered via an insert into the barrel, which was invisible from outside. I recall reading somewhere that the Garands were altered in some unusual way using screws which were filed down, and after the show they were removed, but the barrels had been too badly scarred to shoot effectively.
Sometime later in time, some company made Thompson barrels specifically for blanks. The were so marked on the outside and could not chamber live ammo.
I own a blank firing adapter for my carbine. It fits on over the barrel and twists across the back of the front sight to hold it on. It has 3 or 4 tiny holes to vent gas.
It is very obvious the gun has it attached when it's there. It would have looked odd-ball to a movie viewer who was unaware of the purpose and to those who did know, well, so much for "suspension of disbelief."
I don't think Leonard Nimoy played a Japanese officer in COMBAT!. The series was set in Northern France and the Nazi army was the enemy. I barely recall the episode he was in .... don't know if he played a regular soldier .... medic... whatever.
If he was in THE OUTER LIMITS I don't recall it at all ....
I do recall William Shatner playing a Burmese man in an episode of THE NAKED CITY, with weird slick-back hair and a .... "Burmese" accent that was quite ....entertaining ....
