You own the Company: What to produce?

Ammo, to start with . . .

I'd start with ammo in obscure or hard-to-find calibres. Things like .30 Carbine, .32-40, .22 Hornet, .38 S&W, and so on. Also look to do some primer-only or very down-loaded .22 LR subsonic stuff (400 fps to 900 fps) with the emphasis on low noise.

Then I'd look to re-introduce out-of-production rifles in some of these, like a Marlin 62 clone (lever gun in .30 Carbine), clones of the Marlin Camp 9 & 45 series. I'd look into doing a Camp-style carbine in .30 Carbine as well (though the Camp series action isn't that well suited to it). All the clones would be synthetic stock, at least in the beginning.

Along with these, I'd look into doing single-shot bolts in the same calibres, done as take-down rifles (similar to, say, the Papoose). Evolve these to accept magazines.

More as I think of it . . .

. . . okay, I'm back.

The single-shot conversion to mags is aimed at the beginner who, after he masters the basics shot-by-shot, can graduate to a repeater format without having to change weapons.

For any format that uses a detachable box mag, all practical capacities would be offered. If a 50-rounder would be too clumsy or compromise the reliability of the rifle, I'd point that out while offering the capacities that offered the best depth with reliability.

Offer multiple sighting options (open, peep, ghost, scope, etc.) for those rifles than can support them.

I'm thinking that a composite stock can hold an extra mag, any tool needed for maintenance, and possibly a knife.

Nice blued and wood .38/.357 and .44 double actions.

9x19, .40, .45 combat pistols, again in blued and steel (with rubber grip options), DA/SA and NO LIGHT RAILS.

New Production Makarovs 9x18 and .380- hi and low cap. If possible, I'd make an improved version of the CO2 mak too.

.22 conversion units for the above.

1911A1's in stock configuration- no do-dads

An M-14 type rifle (Semi only) in 7.62x39 and 7.62x51.

An FAL variant in 5.56

A Mauser based hunting rifle.

VZ-58 clones.

Some sort of AK pattern rifle that would not meet the CT definition of AK-style and still fires 7.62x39.

.22 caliber double action revolver in blued and wood with adjustable sights and a 4" barrel.

A good takedown .22 bolt action survival rifle, wiith clamp on iron sights and a descent stock. Marlin hit the nail on the head for semis with the Papoose (me likey) so no need to copy them.

A double/single hi cap .22 combat pistol NO FREAKIN RAIL in steel with exposed hammer.

If legal for intrastate sale where manufacture and carry I would also manufacture some switchblades.

Yup, I wish I could make a lot of things!

I'd do Taurus, S&W & Ruger one step further and produce two wheelguns:

9mm snub - no moonclips necessary.
10-shot 9mm & .357magnums built off the X-frame - again no moonclips.

Diamondback Ordnance would likely produce:
->Full line of non-NFA'd and SBR/SBS versions of all common US standard-issue small-arms of the late-11800s and 20th Century, including .30-40 Krag-Jorgenson and M1903/08 .32/.380
->Modern riffs on old themes, like a 9mm version of the old Colt Model M, or a .50GI Thompson
->Reproductions of the personal weapons of famous individuals and fictional characters, licensed by their heirs/estates/producers (imagine: the official Han Solo scoped broomhandle Mauser, the Indiana Jones .455 Webley, the Dirk Pitt Combat Commander, the General Patton Memorial Magnum...)
->A full line of 1911s in everything from .38 Super on up to .50GI, with modular, interchangeable slide/barrel assemblies (you change caliber by changing out the top-half and mag)--redesigned the way a handgun SHOULD be, for one-handed operation, in both left- and right-hand versions.

COP Derringer (4-shot...Monica Belucci, Matrix...:)) with polymer-frame, maybe in some other calibers (.32 Mag, .380 ACP), and in smaller size. for backup/CCW use.

Someone's already working on the item that I'd produce.

I wish they'd hurry the hell up! :D

Interesting topic/2011 .45acp...

I was thinking about this same thing on and off for the last few weeks.

I would have my R&D dept and/or engineers develop a new model 1911a1 for the 100yr aniversery for John M Browning's 1911a1 pistol design and call it the 2011 model. The 2011 would be just like the 1911a1 model but with updated features and ambi-controls(mag release, slide, etc). It would have a 1913 rail mount and no grip safety but the same basic 1911a1 design. The 2011 would also be released in .40S&W, .357SIG and 9mmNATO. I'd release it in 2011 and sweep the market! :D

A top grade pistol like this would sell in the US and be very popular with LE/military/spec ops/etc.

What about a ".30 Carbine" M1 style rifle in .38 Spl/.357 Mag?

Yeah, actually, since that action works best with rimless cartridges, I might try it in 9mm, .40 S&W, .45 ACP, and 10mm.

Actually, even though the action is significantly different, there's a fairly close resemblance among the M1 Carbines and the Marlin Camp series carbines.

If you could find a way to reliably stack rimmed cartridges (.38, .357 mag, .44 mag) in a box magazine, or some kind of rotary mag (a la Ruger), either a Camp Carbine style rifle or an M1 Carbine style would be very interesting.

My top 5:

-M1 Carbine in 7.62x25.

-Ruger 10/22-style carbine in obscure revolver calibers.

-All-new Mosin Nagant-style rifles with better scope placement, trigger, detachable mags, real safety, etc. (still x54R, though)

-A cosmetically improved HiPoint 9mm carbine.

-Affordable M1 Garand kit rifles for my generation of up-and-coming shooters.

I would make a 9mm lever action and a 9mm bulpup carbine.

An affordable break open type single shot medium barrel length .50BMG. Affordable as in $700ish.

Because more people would buy 14s and FALs if they weren't in that crummy .308 chambering?
I have nothing wrong with the .308. In fact, I believe it's a good round. I think there is a market towards folks by making something that hasn't flooded the market for years. The 14 if done right could compete with the Ruger and some of the high end AK's. There's a lot of folks who might be interested to use the commie ammo they've stocked up on for the SKS, AK's, etc... And the 5.56 FAL- well that would just be neat, and there wouldn't be a whole lot of competition.:)

A good accurate, reliable, semi auto .30-06 hunting rifle that didn't weigh a ton.

I'd license the HK16 from Hk and produce it in standard and bullpup designs.

A DA and SA revolver in 10MM, with moon clips for .40 S&W, and extra cylinder in .38-40 WCF.

A high quailty stainless steel version of the Winchester 92 in .50 S&W. .500 Linebaugh and .454 Casull.

Last, but not least, a PS90 type weapon with the 50 round magazine on top in .223, 9MM, and 7.62X25.

Great thread!

I'd build some more modern guns that chamber widely accessible surplus chamberings, including 7.62x54r, 7.62x25, 9.3x74r, 5.45x39, etc. When you can get ammo in a 2100rd spam can, it'd be nice to have more than one gun to shoot it in. I'd also make:

A $400-500 double rifle.

A takedown survival gun, available in the common SHTF chamberings as well as the commie surplus stuff.

...and a 50BMG just because it's my company and I can. :neener:

Anyone remember that Cod-piece gun in the Antonio Banderas movie Desperado? Yep.... I'd make TONs on those in .50 S&W.

.22 Handguns:

I. Revolvers
a. Kid sized
b. Physically limited -friendly
c. Elderly-freindly

II. Semi Auto
a. Kid sized
b. Physically limited -friendly
c. Elderly-friendly

These in a "Working Person's" configuration .
Meaning selection of stocks to adapt to hands.
It means if a little girl wants Pink stocks, these are available
If a little boy wants Blue and wants to stick a NASCAR sticker on these, give this boy this option.

Fixed sights, with Options for front sights being plain, hi-vis, and color options.
Quality fit and finish, option for simple "parked" finish, or blue, or steel/aluminum alloy.
Comes with quality cleaning kit, screwdrivers and tools that fit the gun.
Easy to inspect, maintain and keep up. On semi's - a magazine loader, and magazine holder so the magazine is "held" allowing one to easier fill magazine.

Starter "set" if you will including not only cleaning kit, tools , mag loader (on semi) also Safety Glasses, Ear Protection, Range Bag, targets, and even a single spinner target. Large Print book, with Rules of Safety and Large Print Owner's manual.

Anyone getting this "kit" is ready to go shoot - just need ammunition. Heck buy the gun and Mom&Pop tosses in ammunition.

Selfish Want here

Remington Nylon 66, bring it back!
I want specifically the brown nylon with blue barrel, Butt-Fed.

Butt fed means [little] fingers are NOT near muzzle.
Muzzle is easier to keep downrange for kids, adults, physically limited and elderly.
Easier to load, and unload. Light, easy to carry, easier to handle.

Again offer options for front sights with colors, hi-vis etc.
Sling swivel studs come with gun, along with cleaning kit and spinner target.

I want a "Kit" - just like a fishing kit that all ones needs is to go out and use it from the get go.

--
Single Shot shotgun with lever opening.

I see a huge NEED for these, and nobody does these to the needs of working folks, in configs to fit kids, physically limited or elderly.

Other ideas on running a firearms company?
  • Never EVER compromise on the 2nd Amendment - 'nuff said.
  • Always look for the Blue Ocean - There are plenty of 1911s, AR15s, etc. on the market... I would do my best to find niches with little to no competition.
  • Do no neglect California - Fifth largest economy in the world and ~2.5 million gun owners (I think, please correct me if I'm wrong) but even that aside, because I believe in RKBA, I would try my best to get arms into the hands of honest citizens in CA, MA, NJ, etc. trying to exercise their rights.
  • Internet savvy reps & internet sales - A larger and larger segment of the gun buying population is turning to the internet for information, customer support, and sales. Having reps that know their stuff, friendly, professional, and accessible can make all the difference....
  • Lifetime warranty on all lines for the life of the guns - Stand behind a product or don't sell it.

What would you have them produce?
Not sure, I'd do market research first. But my inclination would be towards a couple of the following:
  • Similar to the Browning BLR, but with traditional lever action styling & auto-caliber chamber offerings.
  • Similar to the Thompson / Center Contender but lower-end/budget version, emphasis on caliber value and customizable form-factor.
  • Similar to the Kel-Tec P32 but with certain design differences. Probably more reliable and safer mousegun with the same/similar form-factor & weight... but probably an unavoidable higher price point.
  • Folding/take-down EBR with integrated-modular (oxymoronic, I know) optics or at least optics being an important part of the take-down equation. Too many take-down/folding rifles completely lose their advantage the instant an optic sighting system is introduced into the equation.
  • Slimmest 9mm possible, regardless of weight and materials.
  • Exotic (mostly likely polymer framed) Point-Shooting optimized pistol (aimed with index finger, trigger pulled by middle finger).

Would it be commercially viable?
  • CBL (Cowboy Browning Lever) - I dunno... people who want traditional styling probably want traditional internals too... that said, the gun wouldn't be as "boring" or expensive as the BLR and there would be the option to use auto-cartridges like 9mm or .45ACP - if you made the magwell interchangeable with some popular pistol types, it has a chance of taking off as a fun carbine.
  • VTC (Value T/C Contender) - Really play up how the ergos can be built up around the simple action, also for the price of a single G2 in one caliber, you can get the VTC and shoot 3 calibers... I think I could do well.
  • SP32 (Superior P32) - If the product is good, it will sell.
  • SST (Sic Semper... folding EBR w/ optic) - Sort of a niche of the EBR market, if the execution is right (pun unintended) I think this could fly off the shelves as a multi-role SHTF, target, hunting, "tactical" rifle.
  • Slim9 (thinnest possible 9mm) - Chasing the form factor niche...
  • PS9 (Point-Shoot handgun) - I'm really just curious whether a gun built around the concept of point shooting would be good and/or take off... it's an interesting experiment that has to appeal to collectors and possibly those serious about defense. The thing is, this gun is going to look and simply be strange which is going to hurt its market share unless it can prove itself....

How would you advertise?
  • Internet - As said above, the 'net is more and more important and it's insane not to take advantage of such a cost-effective marketing tool. That said, I would do my best to fill my website with content instead of these animated Flash atrocities (or stripped down featureless ones) that a lot of companies are running.
  • Typical - It's sad, but you've got to have a presence, so I would not give up too much ground on TV, print, sponsorship, etc. advertising.
  • Class & Style - No attack ads. No skimpy outfits for objectified women. No rock 'n roll or tacticool slogans.
  • Original Charities & Activist Events - Know, support, and remember the people and why we're doing what we're doing.
