I was at the range earlier this week and met a friend I hadn't seen for a while.

He showed me his new acquisition; a S&W 657 in .41 magnum that was given to him from a buddy.

I have never shot this gun, but dry firing the gun, it had the closest thing I have experienced as a hair trigger (SA); more than a hunting rifle.

It was not sighted in but he offered it to me to shoot anyway.

I put 4 rounds through the same hole, not a clover leaf touching (7 yards)! I thought I had missed on the second shot, but he confirmed the following 3 shots.

What are your best group experiences?

I flinched REAL bad on my first shot and missed the 8X11 paper.... :banghead: Otherwise this is one of my better groups with a .45. I can do this almost every time with my Ruger MKII. 2.5" groups are not unusual.

8 shots @ 25 yards 2 hand hold standing.

My best group with a handgun thus far was with my S&W Model 28, 4". I was shooting 2 handed unsupported in double action, slow fire at 25 yards. I was firing my hand loads consisting of a 158 grain RNL over 4.0 grains of W231.

The last 4 shots landed in a 1.25" or 1.5" group (don't recall exactly). Including the first 2 shots, the group was about 3 to 3.5".

The below group was done at 7 yards firing double action. The gun is a S&W pre-model 10 transitional K Frame, made in about 1947:

I do not do much shooting on paper. The range I go to has falling metal plates to shoot at. I do have a picture of this group, though.

That was at 11-12 yards. The only other group I shot and recorded was 6 inches at 25 yards with the same gun.

Here's a fairly recent one. A (stock) 4" S&W 617 .22LR. 25 yards, double action, standing, unsupported. 5 rounds shot, just under 1".

I get a big silver dollar size ragged hole at about 15m or thereabouts with a G17L and oh, probably two or so mags. On a good day. I'm not much of a pistol shooter, so on ocassion my groups look like patterns. Especially if I feel bad or my hands are shaking.

Rifle's a different story.

I have put 5 of 7 shots on a steel silhouette (full size military target) at 300m using a 686+ 6". But when you figure that back to 25m, the group isn't all that impressive. I also got about a 1.5' group with a 10mm or .40 mini Glock (I forget which, I think it was the G27 though) at 100m.

If you've never shot pistols at rifle ranges, it is a lot of fun. Miculek now, he can shoot balloons with a 617 .22 pistol at 250m --with the revolver held upside down. I've actually seen him do more impressive stuff than that too --on TV.

That's one dude you don't want to tangle with.

Close range, up to 50 feet, is more a test of the shooter than the gun. In my experience, most pistols of reasonable quality will produce groups of around an inch up to 50 feet, but not likely to produce a 3 inch group at 50 yards. For that level of accuracy you will likely need more than a typical Glock/XD/92/SigXXX. Most auto pistols, off the rack, will shoot somewhere around 6 inches at 50 yards. That being the case, I can routinely produce cloverleafs or better with virtually any of my production combat pistols at 25 feet and roughly silver dollar or better at 50 feet. That list to include Glocks, Sigs, Colts, etc. While it's easier to shoot a single ragged hole group at 25 feet with a nicer gun with a match trigger, it just takes more work and concentration with a combat gun like a Glock with a heavy, combat style trigger.

The group on the left is about average 25 yard for me with my Model 14 Masterpiece, the one on the right is well, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then.

3-4.5in groups at like 25/30 yards with a Gen 4 Glock 19.

Thats "best"... average is like 5-6in at 20yrds but I guess I had a good day.

I can't say it's my best ever, but best of the day at least. Shots were double action from my 3" snub.
