I'm positive it's already been done, but I'd like to get everyone's take on what they would choose as their ideal "survival" weapon/weapons. 1 long arm, 1 pistol, what would everyone go with and why?

When I say survival, I mean SHTF, Katrina type, governmental collapse, zombie hordes, crashed bush pilot, etc. You're in a situation where help is scarce if existant at all, you have what you can carry, scrounge, or store in a small cache, say 2 ammo cans worth or space.

I know there is no end all be all weapon, but I'd probably go with a sturdy shotgun like an 870 w/ at least a 4 shot tube, preferably 6 or 7, C&C folding stock for space, trijicon sight set with ring on the rear, and a side saddle to hold some spare ammo with the gun. I figure that'd keep off the zombies, stop deer, bear, birds, squirrels, or armed vermin, depending on the type of shot you had. You could reach out and touch someone/something to 100m without any problems.

For a pistol a .22 revolver w/ at least a 5" barrel as I would prefer to use it as the primary means for putting small game in my stomach and conserve as many shotgun rounds as possible. It could also be used to demotivate armed vermin in a pinch, not the best but enough to change someones mind. It would also be capable of using different kinds of ammunition, like snake shot, .22l/r/s, low powder or no powder rounds like aguilla colibri.

From what I have access too, it's a AR15s with true 5.56 ammo and 30 round mags. The wife is not afraid of the AR15 but is not comfortable with a shotgun. And she is a decent shot out to 100 yards, which won't happen for her with a shotgun.

Her personal carry gun is a 16 round (15+1) Bersa Thunder Plus .380. Mine is a Colt Defender.

I have made changes so come trouble the wife and I use the same weapons, ammo and mags.

If I could choose what I want and not own it would be: and AR15 in 6.8mm, and a Taurus tracker 357 with 6.5"bbl. If I had to choose out of my collection it would me remington 870 with 2+ extension 18" bbl, and my baby eagle (only pistol)

AR15 plus 200 rounds

and

a Browning Buckmark 22 LR, 7 w/scope and silencer plus 500 rds.

If it's just for survival that should do it.

From what actually have:

Yugo AK47 plus 200 rounds

and

a Marlin .22lr w/scope plus 500 rds.

I would have to opt for my mossy 88, with the slide-on saddle, the fiber optic sight I bought for her. I would choose some turkey shot, 2 #0 buckshot loads, some slugs, and some #8 doveshot. And a revolver as well, but if only there were as many rounds for something like the .380 as the .22LR. The .380 offers better stopping power, but still small enough for most small game, IMHO. That, a multi-tool, and a good-sized lock-blade.

Kindrox,

Kind of a side note but if you get a chance you might check out knoxx stocks for shotguns, they have active recoil reduction systems on them they cut recoil considerably. They work well enough that I'm starting to see manufacturers selling the guns with them from the factory. Just some to check out.

For long-term survival, I'd go with a .22 rifle for taking game and a .357 revolver for defence. If its a short-term survival situation where self-defence is more important than hunting, I'd go with a shotgun instead of the .22. Of course, you could hunt with the shotgun too, but you can carry a whole heck of a lot more .22 ammo than you can shotgun shells.

My personal preference would be a Ruger 10/22 and a Smith model 19 for option A, substituting a Remington 870 or Winchester 97 for option B.

Also, in a Katrina-type situation, I would hunker down and try to defend my home until things got back to normal. In the unlikely event of the total collapse of government/society, I would stick with my truck for as long as possible, which would allow me to carry more tools and ammo while remaining mobile.

A bolt action .22 rifle and a Ruger Single Six with both cylinders, and ammo for both calibers. That's for the bush pilot scenario.

For Katrina-like civil unrest, two .38 revolvers and 100 rounds of ammo. No long arm.

It kind of depends on where I'm at at the time.

In this country, it's have to be an AR-15 and some 9mm autoloader, preferably a Sig or Glock. These choices are based on ammo availability. .223 and 9mm are common calibers for LE and are likely to be more available then others, save maybe .45ACP.

If I were overseas, the pistol would be the same; 9mm for some kind. But the long arm would be an AK, no question.

Long arm Ruger 77/22 MK II in .22lr
Pistol FNP 9mm

The rifle allows me to carry alot of ammo, and is a honey of shot.
The FN because it is the one that is commonly chambered, and I am better with it than just about anything else.

I would go w/ my AK(Arsenal)...I have 2000 rds at the ready.For a side,I'd take M32 Glock.357SIG..and a Strider RCC for cuttin' things!

In Before The Lock

Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40 watt range. Silenced Walther P-22, barkless chijuajua & tactical wheel barrow

AK-47 with 300 rounds, Beretta 92 with all the ammo I can carry, plus a few rounds of snake shot in my pocket. No contest.

AK and XD9mm... Hopefully the ammo is common enough for both of them that if I had not initially packed enough, that finding more could happen. Also I know for a fact that both of them will keep on going bang if I can't clean them for a while.

I'd like some kind of optic for the AK, a sturdy red dot would be more than enough. I'd also like a plethora of magazines. Every 2 would be taped together, for quick reloading (mall ninja, I know... but practical in that situation)

The XD I'd be fine with just night sights and a streamlight on it. A few mags and a bunch of extra batteries.

Short term, I would carry my M1, 45 auto, Loving Wife. her AR and a 357mag.
Long term, same weapons.

Very long term, both will be armed with flinters, my long rifle, and her Sea Service musket!

From what I've already got I'd take the Winchester 1300, the Ruger 10/22 and my Browning Hi-Power. Realistically, when I'm not at home, in a SHTF situation you described, I'd probably have to make do with the Glock 29 I carry.

As far as choices go I don't really think about that too much. The possibilities are too many and I'd rather think about how I'd use the guns I have. Maybe I'm just not very fun but back when Y2K rolled around I was seperated from the bulk of my collection by mountains, winter weather and 400 or so miles. I had a 10/22, a Ruger MKII, my BHP, and not any more ammunition than I could easily carry. In retrospect, I figure I could've made do quite well with that. My survival strategy was and continues to be oriented around not having to use firearms.

My Mossberg 500 short barrel, with two boxes of buckshot and my 357 magnum revolver with 5 boxes of ammo.

But even without the optic, my AK's are still accurate enough to achieve "minute of badguy" at 200 or so yards. If your first shot or two go wide, thank God there are still 27 more to make it right!

Glock 17, reliable/ammo friendly. 4/17 rd mags and 2/33rd mags.
AR in 5.56, in M-4 configuration. 4/30 rd mags and one beta mag.

Ammo scarcity will be a big consideration if the SHTF. I like to have 2 of the most popular(by availibilty)calibers for that reason. Also if needed, parts for these weapons should be obtainable.

I would't be terribly concerned with having a bunch of hi cap mags. I'm not looking to get into protracted gunbattles. Just defend myself and put food in my stomach.

That said I would still want a few thousand rounds of .22 and a couple hundred shotgun shells. I'd see something like Katrina as a best case scenario, where I could stay in my house and not have to go anywhere, for a long time, if ever, and just run of the people meaning harm.

Realistically I'm sure I'd end up with about all of my guns anyways, because I'd have to outfit most of my friends and family. That's why I have a truck haha. If I got haul ass, I can haul ass with everything i need for a long time.

AR15 and a 9mm Glock (or two, since I own 2), primarily due to ammo availabilty
I think an AK would be a more robust rifle, but I don't think 7.62x39 ammo would be as easy to come by as .223.

I would't be terribly concerned with having a bunch of hi cap mags.

I'm not either, but since I'll be carrying the ammo anyway, I'm willing to add a few ounces/pounds to have it immediately ready if needed.

I'd have to outfit most of my friends and family

LOL, me too.

Survival from what? If I were in the wilderness, I'd take a .22 LR (probably a pistol) and either a 12 or 20 gauge shotgun. Single shot, pump, or semi - they'll all gather meat.

If I were in a military survival situation, I'd want something a bit more heavy duty - some kind of EBR. Preferably in a caliber that is common and easy to get in the area I'm in.

h-bar with 3-20 rounders & 10 loaded stripers with a 22LR conversion and 500 rounds split between hv's and ssn's. colt 5x20 illuminated/ranger mounted. sig p239 in 40 with 5 mags +100 rounds and a 9mm conversion bbl with 100 rounds.
