Your Choice For Survival

#1 choice is a good pump 12ga. It can do anything from small game and bird hunting, to deer and Elk, as well as be used for bear defense, and self defense. All you have to do is switch out ammo. Probly the most versatile single gun choice by far. small shot for birds and small game, medium for slightly bigger stuff, then buckshot and slugs for SD and larger game.Petty hard to beat, IMHO

Localized Katrina type, or end of the world type?

Katrina-type... A coupla "untapped" credit cards, and extra gasoline cans, my 3/4 ton van and enclosed trailer.

Rule #1) If disaster is happening, be somewhere else.

End of the world: Friends. Make friends with ALL your neighbors. Strength in numbers. Everything else is gravy.

For a Monster Hurricane, flooding, looting and local collapse of authority -

I live in Houston, so I am planning for something like that anyway. Honestly, I have revisted it a few times and like the idea the cowboys has. Shooting the same bullets in the rifle, as the pistol. A lot of times, a bullet coming out of that longer barrel will considerably UP the knockdown power. Most "gun battles" these days occur at fairly close range. Even the Military seems to use the CAR 15 virtually all the time now.

Glock 19 - 9mm
Keltech Sub2000 - 9mm

They take the same mags, so I would make sure to have plenty of them and some of the 30 rnd mags as well.

OR

Zombies - 28 days later - Dawn of the Dead

Ruger GP100 - 4" barrel in .357 mag
Winchester or Puma Carbine - 16" barrel in .357 mag

The advantage for the Ruger / Winchester set up is that you can shot .38's or .357's. Not that I think it would make a heck of a lot of difference, in Dawn of the Dead everyone bought the farm and there was no refuge. If there was say a line of demarcation where (normality) existed and I was on foot to get there, then I would have the above setup. I am sure regular pillaging of towns along the way would refresh and renew my supplies as needed.

Running? Or Staying?

If we are running from something slower than we are, then a Glock 19 and a Keltech Sub2000 - both 9mm. If we're running from something faster than we are, it won't matter.

The 9mm pistol/carbine combo in the truck is cheap to run, holds alot and takes care of the social situation as I navigate my way back home. That is the plan. Not stopping to shoot something, skin it, make a fire, cook it and eat it while I plan with my brothers how to rebuild civilization. No, that's not going to make it here in the urban jungle. Not bugging out...no future in being a refugee...I'm bugging in. Gas and food wouldn't last anyways. Plan is to get home now, where my shelter and safety are, and once I am home, the Garands, the ARs, and the Mossbergs all come out. At least for the first ninety days. If the power doesn't go out, whatever has happened will be short term, a few days. If the power does go out, no atms, no gas pumps, no street lights...most people have never experienced "real" darkness...no house lights, no traffic lights. If it stays out, well...

It seems reasonable in a serious situation that the first two weeks will see every WalMart, KMart, 7/11, et al, stripped to the bone. Batteries, candles, milk, diapers...gone in sixty seconds so to speak. Then the fighting in the streets will begin. Lots of people with guns and those without, all of them hungry and angry at the same time. Fires in the downtown areas raging unchecked...fire departments empty because everyone went home to their families. Cops will be non existent. Hospitals will be chaos and burn also.

Within four weeks those who haven't been killed or crippled will start to migrate out of the city limits searching for whatever they need. Gangs will be prevalent for a short while, till they can no longer feed themselves, then it will be every man for himself. People like us will have to be quiet as a churchmouse. Democracy will be done. Womens rights will be over. Mens options will be down to one.

Within six weeks there probably won't be a cat or small dog left, and large dogs will gradually end up as food after a few weeks running in packs. The noise and the stench of this kind of meltdown will make anyone with shelter stay inside and be quiet until the worst of it is over.

I hope I will be living off what I have put by and doing it quietly with my neighbors. We have established a loose confederation, who is responsible for what and when. Regular trips to Costco/Sam's/WalMart for what's next on the list. Buy two, put one away, after a year you have a six month supply stored. Been doing that for several years now. Don't know if it will work out in the end, and don't want to find out, but it's a start. Candlelight, property patrols with the dogs, listening to the sounds of society dissolving. Could be exciting. Sure will beat all those reality shows and video games!

Or we could band together kick some ass and raise the Southern Cross again. Who knows stranger things have come to pass...next year Jerusalem.:p

Gosh, I wish you would give a real situation like being attacked by a foriegn government where they send millions here to rape, rob and kill our citizens. Oh yea, that's allready being done:what::neener:

Rule #1) If disaster is happening, be somewhere else.

End of the world: Friends. Make friends with ALL your neighbors. Strength in numbers. Everything else is gravy.

I disagree with the last part of that. Let's say (hope/pray) that zombies happened, or there was a global catastrophe. I think strength in numbers would be good in theory, but not with Joe Neighbor. I wouldn't trust anyone I don't already know. For all I know they could rob/kill you in your sleep.

That's how you can tell how you feel about someone, ask yourself, "if zombies happened, who would I risk myself trying to save". My list consists of about 2 people, and I'd stick with them, I know if SHTF, that I could trust them. Everyone else is fair game to fend for themselves, I'd be more worried about people doing what they had to survive than anything else.

Maybe I'm harsh??? who knows...

I live in Florida. Hurricane, I'm packing up my family, my guns, and my pets and as much food and gasoline as I can carry. Then we're getting out of Dodge. I'm not even waiting for the evac order, by that time it's already almost too late to get out effectively. I'd prefer not to travel on the same road with a bunch of panicked last minute travelers.

End of the world, I won't pick one weapon because I know most of the places where they are stored, and I'm sure I can find as many as I want. However, that being said, I don't believe it will happen anyway, and discussing it is just jaw-jacking.

Bush plane goes down in the wilds, I'll take a what is available but my preference would be a shotgun and .45 LC. For a shotgun in that situation I'd rather use a reliable double barrel, preferably a nice short coach gun. Most likely though, I'd have whatever long gun I'd brought for hunting and either a .45 LC or a .44 magnum that I had along as back up.

Depending on the situation and whether or not I'm injured, as well as how badly, I'd probably go with just a good pistol to save weight so that I can carry other survival gear instead of a rifle. I'd be more worried about freezing to death, or dying of hypothermia. Most of the wildlife can be avoided if you're careful, and if such an emergency arises I would probably be able to get a pistol into play faster than a long gun anyway (remember, you're going to be carrying other gear and one hand is likely to already be in use).

What you're surviving would be key to weapon selection in my mind, but for overall run-through-it-all toughness, it'd probably be my Mini-14 as it'll run dirty as well as it'll run clean and as I've said previously, it actually hits what I'm aiming at (shocker for a Mini, I know).

If I'm going to be in this deep doo doo for very long (say ten years) then I want both guns to be black powder. I can always find lead and make powder to shoot them with. You guys are going to run out of ammo too quickly.

Me either, but I did it for fun, and I like seeing what people would use and why. It's fun to get different perspectives, and also kind of validate your own.

On a side note Knoxx needs to make a side folding stock.

For an overall, one-size-fits-all "survival situation", I would probably opt for a Colt AR-15 with a .22LR conversion, along with a 6.8 upper as well; and a Colt M1911 Government Model in .45 ACP, also with a .22LR conversion kit.

At this point I'm hoping some of the ideas on here could help some poor wayward soul, who bought into the media hype about guns, make an informed decision in about 9 months.

After the inaugeration of Americas next Biggest Loser, and the means to defend your own and your property is illegal.

They'll need something for defense from both the government, and the invading hordes, and they may need help selecting something that's still legal.

When the proverbial poopy hits the rotating temperature control device they'll be lookin to get smart in a hurry, and they'll find out in short order it's alot harder to get smart than appear smart, especially when someone's not telling them how to do it.

Defensive SHTF around homestead... Mossy 500 18" and Glock 20.

In a long range, hide out and live scenario ... add the bolt .22lr. I am dragging as many .22lr rounds as possible, 100 rds of 000 and maybe 100 rds of 10mm at most.

And if I run out of lead, that means there are going to be some battle field picks available.

Assuming I have to grab what I have from the safe, the old reliable Winchester 94 in 30-30 goes along with the Beretta 390 12 ga and one of the 22lr pistols. Of course, I'll probably already have pistol on me somewhere.

That old lever gun will outlive us all. Surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet.

I would prolly go with a rifle of the .223 sort, because of the ammo issue, and also a 9mm glock for a katrina like situation. However, in the event of a Zombie take over, after reading the Zombie Survival Handbook by Max Brooks, I would opt for a crossbow with plenty of bolts and a large blunt object for smashing zombie brains while I cruise about on my bicycle searching for survivors and food. Luckily I keep a hefty stockpile of arrows and MRE's and spare bicylce tires for just such occasion!

I would say an SKS with 9-10 strippers full and 500-1000 extra rounds along with a Beretta 92f with 5-10 mags and extra ammo to boot. Although having a bow and a hefty supply of arrows would be great too. That way you can still hunt and not waste any ammo. Plus in a pinch you can make arrows.
