i would really like to say that i would grab one of my ar-15's/10, fal's, mini-14's/30's, pc40, ak 47/74's, sks's, hi-point 45/40's, m1, m1a...but i got to say i would deffinetly go w/ the good ole m1 carbine. practical out to 150 yards(ish), good sights, light weight, sturdy, will run clean/dirty/whatever. i dont care what anybody says either the .30 carbine is a plenty adaquate round. sure, ball ammo may totally blow, but w/ modern expanding ammo it is pretty formible. w/ my own humble testing and research (internet, full dog food cans, plato, etc.) i would say it is roughly or maybe even more powerful then .45 rounds are at the barrel at 50 rounds. nobody sneezes at a .45 round at arm reach, but plenty of ppl doubt the .30 carbine at any distance, makes no sense to me.

complaints against the m1 carbine (that i have argued against recently anyway) are as follows: .30 carbine is a insuficient round (totally not true...similar to hot .357's w/ a longer reach), they dont run well in the extreme cold (we have better lube today made specifically for the cold then when we were in korea), 30 round magazines run so-so (but some run flawlessly!! just buy a box of 10 and your sure to get 7 that run awsome...take the springs and bases out and scrap the other 3! plus they are cheap), .30 carbine ammo is not as available as .556/.308 etc (true, but stockpiling some rounds for your go-to-gun is not really a crazy idea you know. plus it is really easy to reload. and how many rounds is one going to need? buy 500-750 good rounds and call it good. sides, i have about 12-13k ball if it really comes down to needing it) its an outdated design (isreal and several state patrolls dont think so...and isreal is pretty effecient at urban combat), and they dont handle as well as rifles w/ pistol grip stocks (oh wait, m1a1 stocks/clones are cheap, and drop in). i can totally see the argument for a .223 round, but i handle the .30 carbine better, its shorter, lighter, and easier to maintain. in a true shtf situation the m1a has a pretty strong appeal, but this is pbly not as likley as rioting/hd, and even in the shtf situation, .30 carbine is lighter.

i dont really see the need for pinpoint accracy out to 200 yds w/ a rifle in these kind of situations. i need something that i can just plain handle well and shoot well. for me anyway, i have no problem resorting to one of the most venerable designs of all time. hey, im just going w/ my gut instinct on this. plus it is so darn handy and light! god i love these rifles. and everyone else should too dammit!! lol. hey...thats just my .30 cents or so.

sides, i can always have a rifle or 12 as a backup anyway, right?

After some thought . . .

If I could only grab ONE, and that one would have to do me for a while, and if I was resricted to only as much ammo as I could carry . . .

Agonize . . . agonize . . . agonize . . .

Well, darn.

I guess I'd grab the M1 Carbine. I have plenty of ammo. I can carry more of that than just about anything else I have, except 9mm. It's good out to a couple hundred yards. It'll get game in a pinch. It has a respectable practical rate of fire. It's a mag-fed machine. It's light. It's reliable.

(If I had a lever carbine in .357, I might prefer that, since I have the companion revolver. The ammo's not as light, but there's more of it in more places, and good salvage officer would be able to keep it fed. You'd want to avoid firefights, 'cuz a lever action doesn't reload fast.)

My SKS will be my go-to gun when the S hits the F. My best bud will get my shotgun, and his fiance will get my 10/22.

Combined arms and bosom buds for the win!

My AR-15. Which I have allready set up with my LBE, ready to go. Significant other would probably have to use my Ak-74 Clone. Which would work well for her with the Cobra sight, just place and shoot for the most part.

ArfinGreebly, I like your choice :D

The M1 Carbine doesn't get enough credit as a go-to gun these days....ammunition availability/quantity seems to be what turns off some people.

That's why you stock up 5000 rounds beforehand. :)

To me it depends on the situation. Do I get to drive out, or am I running from a house for fear of artillery or bombs hitting it? Do I get a chance to get home? Am I surprised during this invasion? Or do I know what's going on?

If it is a Red Dawn, I have to run, and run quick, likely not only forsaking my family friends, etc. I'm grabbing my Ruger and my girlfriend is getting hers. I'm getting my AK and my girlfriend her AR. I'm getting my HK knockoff and pulling the scope off one of my bolt actions to attach at a later date.

Take all the ammo I can, throw it in the car, and be ready to take shots quick. I would try to grab another random gun so that I could bury it for later use. Just depends.

If it was a matter of I had a couple of days to prepare, I'm getting everything I have, caching most of it, and getting only the weapons I and any fellow travellers could carry and bugging out headed due west to join the resistance.

two crates (5 rifles ea.) of Yugo SKS with ~5,000 rounds of mil. surp. would enable you to train and arm a 20 ~ 30 man militia to a minimum proficiency level.

Well thought out!

Marlin 336 .30-30
Maybe not the best tactical rifle, but since I was a kid, I've carried one on many outings and it just feels *right* to me. Later, when finances allow, I may do something 'better', but for now it works.

AR-15

The one Firearm i have ready to grab and run is The AR-15. I have had this rifle for five years and it still works as good as the day i bought it. everybody is real concerned about keeping it clean and having it jamm easy....i shoot that rifle at least twice a month and put at least 200 rounds each time i go shooting. Over 10,000 rounds over the years and still accurate not once giving me ANY trouble. my dumbass has dropped that rifle in the mud, sand, and dirt (here in arizona), i just pick it up, hope it works fine and it still shoots perfect. maybe i am just lucky mine has been real good to me because everybody i talk to looks down on AR-15s`and tell me its a piece of crap...i beg to differ.

Minute man rifle? Probably the one your shoot the best! ;)

Who are we fighting? In an open setting the Garand has overwhelming firepower. In an urban setting, an SKS, AK or AR15 is probably a better choice.

Milsurp tactical:

MilsurpTactical.jpg

Rifle in hand: FN49
Slung rifle: M39 w/ scout scope

The FN would probably be better for firefights, since I have stripper clips which work and it handles better. The M39 would probably be better for sneaky bastard stuff, since it's more accurate and has a scope on top.

1. AR
2. AK
3. Springfield SOCOM 16
4. Mini 14 or 30

Why? My "gunsmithing" ability, availability of parts, availability of ammo AND carrying the aforementioned.

:)

The M1 has become my number one star...my appreciation for this rifle is growing exponentially...and the accounts I am reading from WW2 and Korea vets is setting my fondness of the gun in cement!

Well, OK.

While the rest of you are going "MinuteMan",
I'm reading that as an estimate of "LifeTime" while trying to save what's left,
& I'm heading elsewhere. (No disrespect. YMMV. You do it your way, I'll do it mine...)

I'm thinking longer term survival instead of head'em off at the pass.

I'm standing over here with Cosmoline with a CZ452 .22LR, reasonable for killing small game for food, and Velojym with a Marlin 336 .30-30 (lot's of rnds in backcountry stores - get 'em while they last) while the rest of you fight it out in the metropolitan centers).

If push comes to shove, they'll both do fine for taking out an enemy.

Hey, can I bring my 870, too?
Add a K9, and I'm good to go.

Buckle your seatbelt, Dorothy.
If stuff like this happens, I'll not be in Kansas, but heading for AK.

..I wouldn't complain in having a good 30-30 lever action carbine for protection..all round dependable gun...

I'm arming the neighborhood. I already know who has experience with firearms and who doesn't. Learned it from casual conversations. Those with military training or extensive firearm expereince get the best toys. Most of them don't know about my arsenal at all. It's not that big, but I collect milsurps and have plenty of ammo as it is so darn cheap..

Long range- My savage with about 200rounds of ammo:evil:

Medium range- SKS with 500rounds of ammo

Up close and personal- If your not dead by then, my K-Bar should do the trick. ( I dont own a pistol for the reason that I plan to kill them before they get to me)
