After reading Splattergun's post, I thought maybe we oughtta turn our attention to our faithful hunting companions, the dog.

Here's my clod, Rosco. He's a decent dove fetcher and he loves the water. I don't think I'll ever instill enough discipline into him to be a good duck dog, but he still likes to get out in the water after the dummy.

This was after a quail hunt last season.

My German Short-Haired Pointer, Remi:

She loves upland hunting and is great on point, but really hates water. Her first quail hunt she flushed a covey and decided to grab a bird before we shot it to save us the money for the shell:p It did scare us that we were almost aiming at the bird though..

this is daisy, she will retire this year, she is 8. a pedigree Lab she is a good duck and pigeon shooting dog with a more limited rough shooting ability. she blood tracks deer very well indeed. she has been my mate for a lot of years. She sits on the marsh with me... even shares my coffee

This is Becka. She will be 5 this year, and she is my constant companion. She has that drive that everyone wants in a dog, and I am really lucky to have her. We hunt a lot of high grass marshes so we would loose downed birds almost every trip. Since I have had her, you can count the lost birds on one hand.

She is so "into" the geese that if one flies over or she hears them talking, they have her undivided attention. They will even wake her up from a dead sleep.

My brother took this one a few years ago.

Here's Belle and I a couple winters back:

This is Anakin. He's a year and a half and I can't get him to sit still long enough, yet, for ducks. He points well but there is no upland game in SE PA. He goes everywhere with me.

Our Jadgterriers

Kubi
2000 to 2004 Kubi was a master hog hunter. He never met a hog he couldn’t stop and feared none. He was also a fantastic family dog and a great blood tracker. He met his end on the hunting grounds of North Texas after being bit in the neck by a large Western Diamondback Rattle Snake. Kubi lived for about 6 hours after taking the bite and there was nothing more that could be done for him. I was holding him in arms when he passed on to the great hunting grounds in the sky. It’s tough to lose a hunting partner, and a committed friend and companion.

Mickey
Mickey is Nitro’s son and is a big goof. He is mainly a lap hound as my daughters have spoiled him rotten. But there is no taking the hunt out of a Jadgterrier. In between having attention lavished on him and playing dress up with the girls, Mickey likes to get out and mix it up with the local wildlife. He is a decent blood tracker but really loves to fight raccoons.

Nitro
Nitro was my replacement for Kubi. His personality is much softer than Kubi’s in the house and in the truck but he is a 100% fireball on game. I’ve never seen a dog that has the endurance this little guy does he can run full tilt all day long for days on end. When he’s not hunting he is a little lover, he cherishes children and LOVES to ride in the truck.

Belle
Belle is a princess warrior. She loves to fight anything that wants to have a go and is an excellent blood tracker and catch dog. Unfortunately she broke her hind leg as a puppy and gets sore on it pretty quick so I keep her in reserve and we try not run her too much. Once the other dogs are baying up however princess Belle loves to jump in and “get some”. She is a very slow and meticulous blood tracker when I’ve lost a blood trail and the other dogs have given up it’s time for the “mega nose” Belle to take over, she’s calm and slow when working out a hard trail.

This is my whippet. Great dog to take bowhunting because she's super quiet. Will chase a rabbit down in about 20-25 meters. Practically rocket propelled acceleration.
Not super courageous, so I never have to worry about her grabbing something meaner than her. That what she thinks I'm for as she hides behind me.
Sweet as molasses and has a really soft coat. Great with people. Just the best dog I've ever had. Every place I take her the little girls and grown women just fall over themselves trying to pet her and talk to her.
I have seen her tree a groundhog. That was tricky. :)

Dragon,

I'm in SE PA also, and had a GSP for 15 years, and hunted Pheasant with him here and in Colorado when I lived there. There used to be a Pheasant farm in Berks County, (I'm in Chesco) that I belonged to. Eastern Colorado has some good Upland game bird hunting.

Not mine but a friend has a beagle that he uses for both rabbit and pheasant. Unfortunately due to her age last season was her last hunts :(

I don't think it's open amy more. The old man that ran it passed away a few years ago. That's one of the reasons the game lands here(berks) aren't stocked like they used to be. They stock them for the youth hunt but that's it for the year. I'm all for getting rid of some of the farming practices so the wild population will come back.

Yes, I believe it closed a few years ago, and if memory serves it was located in of all places "Birdsboro". That's where I trained my GSP.

I trained him exclusively for rabbits. I zapped him until he lost interest in deer and squirrel.

SIL's dog, Ruger, I helped train. He didn't have a nose for squat. Sadly, though, he got run over.

Me, I want a beagle soon as we move. I like shooting rabbits, haven't hunted with a good beagle in 35 or 40 years. Where we're moving, middle of nowhere in the woods, I can keep a dog and run rabbits. :D I MIGHT get another lab, don't know.
