My brother has the "bare bones" Savage Mark II that I was getting about 1 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with, with CCI Stingers.

Therefore, I'm thinking about getting the FV-SR version. Anyone have one? Opinion?

Hi ORion8472,

I don't have one yet but everything that I have been reading has been very positive about both the rifle and it's accuracy.
The only real discussion has been whether the shooter likes or hates the trigger but more people seem to like it.

That's VERY good accuracy for a .22lr shooting supersonic...

I don't have a MKII, but I do have a 93 which is basically the same thing with a magnum rimfire action. Mine's incredibly accurate, sub-MOA on a good day. I'm sold on Savage. I don't think you'll be disappointed by the MKII. The Accutrigger is great, too.

First of all, the entire Mk.II/Model 93 series are great rifles for the money. With better ammo you can likely half that group.

If you don't mind the added barrel length and paying a little more I would go with the TR series (or TRR if you want the threaded bbl). The better stock and thicker floorplate are worthwhile upgrades IMO (of course you can always add those later if you want).

:)

I just took delivery of one on Thursday. Only glass I had to mount up was a Super Sniper 10x, so that is what I used for now.

I also have a Savage GVXP ( Dicks Special ), the FV-SR is the newer E Receiver so the bolt throw is about 1/2 longer than the GVXP, however it is hardly noticeable. The larger bolt knob is a welcome addition.

Took it to the range Saturday am, some have said it needs 500+ rounds to settle in , I did not find that to be the case. I boresighted it at home , and had it hitting where I was aiming within 5 shots at the range.

I tried various types of ammo with it, all functioned and shot well , some much better than others.
Ammo tested:
  • Wolf MT
  • Federal Bulk
  • Federal 510
  • Remington Target Rifle
  • Aquila Golden Eagle Match Rifle
  • Aquila Super Extra ( just cause I had a brick of it )
  • Remington Club Extra
  • Aquila Subsonics
  • Remington Subsonics
  • CCI Blazer

Tt shot the Aquila Golden Eagle Match Rifle as well as it did the Remington Target Rifle, which is good for me as the Aquila is much cheaper :D

With Super Sniper 10x mounted ( soon to be replaced by a Mueller Target scope 8x32x44

50 yard group ( shot from the bench with Tactial Innovations "Stratus" can attached. I did shoot some tighter groups but forgot to grab that target.

The next time I go out I hope to have a few more brands/types of ammo to try out , liked Tenex, CCI SV , etc

In all I am very pleased with this rifle, for $280 I am extremely satisfied. I am not a huge fan of synthetic stocks, so the stock will be replaced with a Boyd Rimfire Hunter stock in the next couple months or so.

Pictures of the pair of Savage 22's I have now:

** It's just the angle I took the picture at , the FV-SR bll is quite a bit shorter than the other Savage. **

Hope this helps,

Reasons I didnt go with the TRR
Don't like the "Tacti-cool" stock at all.
Didnt want the longer bll ( would look crazy long with a can on it )

I prefer the lighter and lesser priced FV-SR. I would just be getting it for fun. And since my brother's "cheap" Mark II grouped as well as it did, I would expect the FV-SR to be as good or some better, which would be quite fine with me.

Which is exactly why I bought the FV-SR, cheaper and I can change the stock later, and get it the way I want.

As is, it's a great shooter, to me , the FV-SR is the best bolt 22 for the money.

Thanks for including the picture!

As for the stock, I'm quite fine with the plastic stock it comes with. In fact, I'm quite fine with exactly how it is set up. Just a scope for it, and some sort of muzzle . . . whatever . . . and I'll be good to go with it. :)

I have a Savage MkII BTVS and it's great. Very accurate and fun to shoot. Best group to date is 0.825" for 5 shots at 100 yds using Remington/Eley Target.

I have a Savage MKIIBV and mine will shoot 1 1/2 groups at 100yards and with match ammo less then one inch. That makes me think if you dont have one get one..
Bill...

I have an FV. I thought about getting an FV-SR, but there weren't any in stock when I got it. I really, really, like it. I did put a thicker recoil pad on it for length of pull, and a cheek rest for proper cheek weld.

Probably will get a nicer scope for it late this year.

It likes really expensive .22LR best, though. :D Does pretty well with Blazer and Eley Sport Rifle, but it shines best with better ammo, like Eley Rifle, or Lapua. CCI SV, it doesn't do well with. Haven't tried Wolf yet.

I picked up an FV a few years ago, and I love it. I did some ammo testing, myself, and mine likes CCI Stingers the best, thus far. The Wolf MT was a great choice, too, but not really good for hunting and such.

I'd love one of the FV-SR's, but I don't have money to put into a suppressor anyway, so it's not a big deal. If anything, I'll likely get nicer glass for it first, then put a can on it. I'm not a fan of the scope I have.

EDIT: I'd recommend a cheek rest. The stock is horribly low for a cheek weld, if you use a scope. /EDIT

This was taken from 50 yards. With a nicer scope and a calm day, I could probably come up with better groups. Best group with Stingers was 0.63". Best overall group was with the Wolf MT at 0.59". Keep in mind these were my initial sighting groups with Stingers, so look more at group sizes than where they're located on the paper.
