Your opinion of the IMI Galil?

Not quite true. At least from 1982 to 1989, my time with intimate IDF knowledge, every "regular" combat unit I knew of (infantry, engineers, armor, artillery, paras, AA, land and sea sayerot) where issued Galils or the short barrelled Glilon. Officers often chose shorty M16s, and M16A1s were often issued to second line and reserves.

Thank you for the correction. I wonder when the change occurred.

After reading more about the Galil, it seems to be nothing more than an improved version of the AK-47. Since the AK-47 is such a well-known and high profile assault rifle, then why isn't more said about the Galil since it is an *improved* version?
"Improved" is up for debate.

+1 -- it's really not much of an improvement. The longer sight radius and peep sights are nice, but they don't do much that a well made AK in the same calibers can't do.

And they have the slappiest triggers on automatic of any AK-type weapon I've ever trained on. Don't know what that's about . . .

the charging handle was somewhat more ambi on a galil than an ak.

The Glilon

That's even a bit shorter than the standard Glilon SAR I'm familiar with. The front hand-guard is also a bit different.
