I voted for savage cub, mainly because I have one for my boys. They are surprisingly accurate little guns, but very loud for a 22. With my oldest son ( 10 ) I let him shoot either my Winchester 69a, or the WZ-48. He likes both, and does well with them.

Mag fed bolt guns are a good idea. I'll look into those.

The CZ seems to have everyones attention, I'll have to check those out.
The CZ's seem to be a great gun, but, if you don't want to spend that much money, the Mossberg "Half-Pint" has a "single-shot magazine", once the kids get older the gun accepts a regular 10-shot magazine.

I just placed an order for the Savage CUB Mini Youth today. Should be in by the weekend. It is for our 6 year old grandson.

I thought it was better than the cricket or chipmunk. I did not care for the lack of craftsman ship I saw with those two rifles. I also liked it better than the Henry mini youth. The Henry was okay, but I am a fan of Savage bolt rifles. Someday he may get a Henry Lever gun though lol.

I am hoping that when I am dead and gone he will someday give it to his grandson and tell the kid about me. Memories is how we live on, I hope to go on for a while.

If you are serious about teaching your kids how to shoot they need a decent rifle. The chipmunk/crickett rifles I've handled had terrible triggers and poor sights in my opinion. They may be hard for your kids to cock. Also there is a question of safety with these rifles. If the bolt is cocked and the bolt handle is lifted up it is very likely the gun will fire. I've seen it happen and thank God the muzzle was pointed in a safe direction.

I would spend my money on a savage, marlin, or something similar. The cz scout is an excellent rifle with one possible exception. The pistol grip is too large (even for me). Otherwise they are outstanding rifles.

Stay away from the Cricket. I purchased 2, one for each of my kids when they where 6 and 8, (now 22and 24). Both where junk. Along with the already mentioned poor trigger and sights they failed to extract spent cases about 70% of the time. I think I ended up giving them away just to get rid of them. Have no experience with any other little guns as I ended up building one for them out of an old model 60.

My dad bought me a stevens crackshot, when i was a wee one. I went to the range today with a 7 year old, had a grand old time, i set him up with about a bazillion balloons stuck to the 25 yard target frame. There were a couple other kids at the range, and ill be darned if they didnt get outshot from by a 7 yr old on his first outing.

The other two kids did alright, but they were shooting an autoloader and a pistol, the kid with the autoloading rifle just loaded and emptied as fast as he possibly could. I think a single shot rifle is the first thing a kid needs for a long time. Teach em that every shot counts.

At this time I'm leaning toward the Savage. The snow is almost gone and we should be able to get down to the pits in another week or two.

The CZ Scout comes with a single shot adapter installed. You can purchase mags to replace it once you're comfortable with the kids using them, or when you want to shoot it.

Trust me, your going to want to shoot it. :)
