Youth shotgun: Mossberg vs. Remington

Either gun should be 100% reliable and both would serve you well. I'd pick whichever your daughter finds more comfortable.
I like the Mossberg because IMO the safety on the Mossberg 500 is just a bit more user-friendly.
Do both guns come with vent ribs? My boys' Remington 870 Express Jr. model came with a vent rib, which is a nice touch.

I've got the Remington 870 express youth in 20ga. 'Cause I'm SHORT. 
I've got a slug barrel on it and it's my southern Michigan deer gun. I like it a lot - very handy.
The only drawback is the finish - it seems to LOVE to sprout rust, even if I wipe it immediately after use. I watch it closely now, and it's not a problem, but it IS a little annoying if I head up north and it spends a lot of time in the case.
My husband's Mossberg 12ga has a slightly different finish, and he doesn't have that problem. I also think, in hindsight, I prefer the placement of the safety on the Mossberg.

I bought my youngest son the Remington 870 Express 'Youth' gun.
It is in 20 gauge, and has a 21" vent rib barrel.
I found a 'beater' stock at a gunshow (Remington 74x and 76x series rifles have the same dimensions as the 20 ga scattergun) and cut it down to fit my son.
Be forewarned. . . . the recoil pad on the Express Youth gun is that, in name only. That factory pad is rock hard.
With Winchester AA loads, this scattergun was beating my young son.
I wound up putting a Limbsaver pad on this 'beater' stock, and he has no more problems.
I highly recommend a Limbsaver Pad in place of the factory pad!!!!!!!!!
(Note: I've recently ordered and received a Knoxx 'SpecOps' stock for 20 gauge, that will go on his 870, very soon!)
I also bought the 11-87 Youth scattergun for my son, my wife and my youngest daughter to shoot.
For my son, the stock is still a little long, but, for the girls at home, this shotgun is great!!!!!!!
It recoils like a 28 ga., or even a .410!!!!

I got the Bantam Mossberg for my kids. It's really been a great gun that I like to shoot myself. It came with a certificate for an adult stock when they get older, I don't know if they still do but it was a nice addition. The Mossberg also has an extended slide handle that makes it easy for short arms, I don't know if the Remington has this or not.
No complaints at all and it's had a few thousand rounds through it including a few hundred slugs as that's what my son is into now. He likes the kick.

My son has handled both. Ended up with the super bantam with a synthetic stock. I love the way it shoots and it is very easy for him to handle. The gun comes with screw in chokes and the adjustable stock allows you to adjust to the varying size of the particular individual.
