Yugo Sks On The Way!

Took The Plunge!
Just ordered a Yugo M59/66 from AIM in VG condition and cannot wait! After putting the purchase off to buy other things like my Saiga.223 I finally saw the light! How can you beat the $109 price? Maybe next time I'll go the extra $40.00 for the "Select Grade"?

Now I have to think about a sling, scope mount(it's really not a scope rifle and yeah I'll learn to use the IRON sights TOO), etc. Also, I saw that Cheaper Than Dirt has a "Quick Change Out" 30 round mag that can easily be used on an SKS. Don't know if they are any good but I already have a ton of 7.62X39 on stripper clips so I won't grab one just yet.

Here's a pic of the CTD mag for $18.95 - maybe in the future on another SKS. After all, if this baby shoots and feels as good as you guys have been saying, it WON'T be my last SKS!


Any experiences, comments, recommendations most welcome!

All I can say about mine is that I love it. For specific tasks I grab a specific rifle. For fun I grab the SKS. The beauty of it is that it can do some of the same things as the .223, the .308, etc. so it really can serve you well.
(ATTN .223 and .308 PURISTS! I didn't say it could do the SAME thing ALL the time like these calibers!)
Forget the removable mags, the strippers are just as fast and more reliable. If you want detatchable mags in 7.62 x 39, get an AK.

Load up on some Wolf ammo and fire it up!

Haven't seen many detatchable mags that work well. Some are loose, some hold the rounds to low, some fall apart, etc. Though sometimes you get lucky and get one that just needs the feed lips opened up and it will work more or less fine. Instead of bother with that, I got a SAR-2 for now, and left my SKS alone, except for a new wood stock.

No Bubba-izing the Yugo SKS unless you go whole hog----even when the AWB goes away-----you still have to worry about US parts counts and that they are imported under C&R status-----change things and you lose the exemption.------Sorry.

I believe the Yugos from AIM come with a sling. The ones from SOG do, for example. It's not a tacticool single point sling or anything, but it does the job.

Most scope mounts for the SKS aren't that good (especially the ones that are simply replacement receiver covers). The best way to mount a scope, IMHO, is putting it forward so the scope doesn't get slapped by recoil every time you shoot. Better yet, put some Mojo peep sights on it.

I think the consensus around here is that any aftermarket mags on a Yugo are a step downward. Ten rounds of 7.62x39 is probably enough for anything you'd use an SKS for...

I think I will leave my Yugo alone - no mags. And I think that I may opt for the mojo sights rather than a scope. My guess is that if this rifle is 1/2 as much fun as I think it is, it WON'T be my last so I may screw around with one and keep however many more I buy "as is".

If all goes well, even with the holiday, I'll be breaking it in a week from this coming Sunday! "Range report" will follow...

The detachable mags are illegal on a Yugo. Congrats on a very good rifle purchase.

I don't know enough about this to know the answer to what I am asking so take this with a grain of salt.

Would Mojo sights, technically, alter the rifle from original issue condition, therefore removing the C&R status, therefore making the rifle illegal to import......ergo making your Yugo illegal to own with the Mojo sight installed?

Once again, I am not 100% positive and this is really for my own information. 922 gets crazy sometimes.

Make sure you get all the cosmoline out of the bolt before you shoot it, or else you'll be in for a surprise when it slamfires. The firing pin should rattle when you shake the bolt. Complete takedown and reassembly instructions are here: www.surplusrifle.com.

cslinger, go over to Survivors SKS Forums, & I'm sure you will find info to clarify this for you. There is a lot of talk concerning the Yugo, & how relatively minor changes can affect C&R status.

I don't blame you for wanting one of the 30 rounders. I like to get one if they were legal. I agree that the Yugo is a great gun as it is though. Mine have been 100% reliable, & although I haven't tried it, I hear that you can load them almost as fast with stripper clips as you could with a detachable magazine.

Yeah, I've heard the same things. However, I've never actually managed to make it happen in real life. Invariably, about halfway thru a stipper clip the rounds will stack up in the mag and I'll have to stop and jiggle everything around to get the remaining rounds down the clip and into the magazine.

I'd pay damn good money to see a repeatable, fast, and reliable stripper clip reload demonstrated on any of my SKSs...
