Recently received a Yugoslavian SKS that shoots very well is very accurate as far as an SKS is concerned. However when shooting the gun with a 30 round magazine nearly full I noted the magazine to fall out of the gun after the first few rounds. What gives, is the magazine too heavy coupled with the recoil, some how releasing the magazine? Or what? Any suggestions on this would be truly appreciated.: confused:

Put your Yugo back the way it was with the 10 rnd. internal mag setup. It is a cleaner, lighter, and more dependable SKS. That was the way it was designed. I have found the aftermarket 30 mags are somewhat junk. You can load almost as fast with the stripper clips when you practice.

I have no experience with 30rd mags in the SKS. In the past I used Tapco 20rd with success. A metal 20rd I bought never worked. You may have to find a way to extend the tab on the magazine of the catch. Reduce any wobble if you can as well.

Needless to say, but I traded it off for one in original form and haven't looked back. With the exception of one or two rarer Chinese models, the SKS didn't come with detachable mags. They won't drop free on a closed bolt unless you grind ears off of it.

I would at least try to find a factory 10rd magazine and give it a shot. I am 99% that any SKS mag should work. Get some good stripper clips and that thing can be loaded in a hurry. I bought mine at a gun show years ago. Some newer ones I have seen are really flimsy. The key is to place your left thumb on the rear of the clip when inserting rounds with your right thumb. Don't apply a lot of pressure, just keep the clip aligned and they will zip in better than any other design I've used.

I wasn't sure but I thought the 30 round mags were of inferior quality, although they seem to lock up really well. Will have to find some stripper clips. or a Tapco 20 rounder. I noted the front lip of the 30 rounders to be kind of mashed up. I'll also, if I go with the stripper clips, have to get the innards for the stock, as well as a new wood stock as the one on it is synthetic type.

The synthetic stock should accept the factory magazine without any modification. The original mags come as an assembly and will snap right in. You just have to field strip the rifle to reinsert the original magazine.

Be mindful of CFR 922r compliance issues if you start adding US made parts.

I would prefer to get one of the those Chicom 20 rd mag with the star. They are quite rare to find nowadays and do cost more .

The detachable mags are known for being unreliable and they screw-up the looks of the gun. The factory mags are usually flawless.

The Yugo I had was all original, and ran through a case or so of ammo while I had it. Magazine was never a problem, but as I said, it was original as manufactured.

Had other problems with it, got them fixed, but it wasn't very accurate, at least not enough to satisfy me. Glad yours is accurate enough for you - get a functioning magazine, and you should be good to go.

That's usually the case but not always. I have several detachable mags that have never failed even once in any way in over 20 years of shooting. And I've put many thousands of rounds through my SKS. That's not to say all detachable mags work well. They certainly don't. Most are junk. But there are some that work great if you know what to look for. Anything that is "USA" brand (not just made in the USA) will almost certainly be a good mag. They are hard to find in new condition now but I see used examples around a lot. Before the AWB that was the only brand available and they sold a bunch of them.

The U.S.A. mag.s are better than most of the after market magazines made. But as been pointed out. These rifles work best with the original 10rd.mag.! The can be loaded very fast useing stripper clips. I find this to work well through all the SKS's. I have owned. These make good all around rifles & work well for almost anything you will need it to do! But do yourself a favor and dump the 30rd. magazines!

I have a Russian SKS 45, I have tried the metal 30 rd. mags and one worked quite well but it was not easy at all to change I put the original 10 rd. mag. back in and left it there because I just like loading with stripper clips. If I remember correctly, in Vietnam back in the 60's almost every sniper we shot out of the trees had a Chinese SKS rifle with the 10 rd. mag. and their ammo pouch had nothing but loaded stripper clips. I guess they had the same problem we are talking about and just used what worked best. I never saw one of the Chinese SKS C models that used AK mags there.
