Hey folks -

I purchased a Yugoslavian SKS this past spring to use as a south texas topdrive/ranch/pig gun and am currently in the market to put a red-dot scope on it. That being said, I want to replace the rear receiver with a new receiver with a weaver rail incorporated on top.

I have looked at several different replacement receivers with rails but every single one seems to have mixed reviews, i.e. having to file, machine, etc yourself after receiving the product.

Has anyone out there purchased a reliable, sturdy replacement receiver for their Yugo SKS that fits great and doesnt move, hence making the scope lose zero?

Any comments and suggestions will be GREATLY appreciated!

Many thanks -

Max

I think you mean "dust cover" or "receiver cover", not receiver. As far as I know, the rails that replace the cover can shift, causing your scope to lose its zero. Not sure if the gas tube replacements move also, but if I had to guess I'd bet they move too.

I think most people just end up mounting peep sights if they want something different. There was actually a recent thread here about SKS peep sight options if you're interested.

Forgot to add: You could drill and tap the receiver for a scope mount.

+1.

Been there done that with three different models. None of them were any good. The model that replaces the gas tube is even worse. In order to properly mount a scope on an SKS you have to drill and tap the receiver and install something like a Choate mount.

That is true. I'd say that my Yugo SKS's gat tube moves very little compared to the wobbly dust cover. If the replacement railed covers require filing and fitting, it is because they have to make them too bulky and let the user fit it in a way that won't move ... not worth it for me.

My solution was to put on a peep, tech-sights makes a goos one that replaces the dust cover pin and mounts to the actual receiver, it holds zero just fine when removed/replaced. If I had to put an optic on, it would be a red-dot of modest or no magnification on the gas tube cover or in place of the existing rear sight.

Welcome to the forum, there are a lot of SKSs out there, someone probably has a setup for you to copy.

Get one of these:

I bought two different models, one on a Norinco (strictly scope rings) and another for my Yugo (1913 rail). It clamps straight to the receiver so any movement by the cover plate is minimized and zero is unaffected until you remove it (but it's an SKS and you probably will only do that once in a blue moon anyway... :neener:) and they are high mounted to allow use of iron sights when you realize the rifle isn't really accurate enough to utilize a scope anyway :uhoh: ;)

No! Forget the receiver cover, even if you do somehow get it to stay everytime you clean the rifle you will have to rezero the rifle. The only sure and sturdy way to mount a scout or red dot scope is with http://scoutscopes.com/

had one, worked great

BOY are they ever high! Don't think I'd want to shoot a rifle while trying to peer through a scope mounted that far above the comb of the stock.

An SKS is usually pretty darned accurate (with good ammo) but no wonder your results aren't good with two strikes against you! (Using a receiver cover mount to begin with, and using rings 4" above the comb of the stock to boot!)

What he said. Just take the $30 you were going to spend on the dust cover mount and buy lottery tickets instead. At least that way you have a chance of winning.
