I've outgrown my current safe. I'm going to start finishing out my basement this summer. It's Alabama and the temp averages 150 F, with 150% humidity. I'd like to go ahead and buy a safe and have it moved into the basement. I don't want to store guns down there until I get the HVAC exchanging air and keeping the temp stable. I was thinking of using ZCorr bags but they close by velcro and don't look air-tight. Will they be adequate at keeping my collection safe for three months or so despite the air being high humidity?

Move the safe in and use it with a GoldenRod or two.

That's what I've done and my guns have survived 15 or 20 years of a wet unfinished basement in a 98-year-old house. The walls are brick and 14 inches thick, the floor is cracked concrete and there's no AC or heat - other than what comes off the water heater, boiler pilot and insulated radiator pipes.

Richmond is classified as sub-tropical - it's hot and humid here, but summer is a little shorter than yours.

I have used Inhibitor brand VCI cardboard chips with tools and guns. I strongly believe your guns would be fine in Z-corr bags for a year or more.

Thats reassuring. I'm not comfortable without them being in a safe, but was unsure how they'd fare down in the basement. I think my Dad finding out the barrel of his old Ithaca developing extensive surface rust was what mainly concerned me. He used a Goldenrod and stored it in a bore sock, but I'd bet it was a long time since he had given it a surface coat of oil.

firearms in Z-core bags are good for along time in most any environment. As long as you seal them well and don't open and close them often, you are fine. That's what they are made for.
