It goes without saying that there is an absolute blessing in choosing the right components from the get-go when you're going to attempt to produce something you want a certain way. Sometimes you only have access to specific things given your amount of money or in my case; time and accessibility to reliable smiths. I've been gathering the components for a custom Mauser build, based off of a certain receiver that in and of itself, is very nice, well-crafted, sturdy and well-liked among the seemingly few Americans that own one.
It's a commercial Zastava M70 Mauser 98 action. Found in Zastava's Serbian import hunting rifle most commonly referred to as the LK-M70. If you try to Google it, you're going to see a whole lot of AK-47s and pistols because apparently "M70" needs to be the name of every damned gun that Zastava designs.
Anyway, this action is often spoken of synonymously with the Charles Daly Mauser X, Commercial FN, Interim Mauser X, and the Remington 978. In many forums just like this one, people speak as if this is all the same action, and that may be true in theory, but it doesn't mean dimensions are the same. I myself am completely unable to find precise receiver dimensions for any of the actions I just mentioned, let alone all of them. I wish there was like a guns-mithing database where all of this i information is readily accessible.
I dare you, any of you to try and find a stock for this action. Nearly every moment that I have not been on my 60 hour a week work shift, I have been Googling, Ebaying, Gunbrokering, Boyd'sing (whom by the way only makes a left-hand version of this action...***?) I've tried the 3 major big time stock producers and Boyd's makes only a left hand version. I do not understand that at all, but it is what it is.
Originally, I wanted to put it in a vintage stock. I tried it with a Mauser 98k. I got it to technically work after a lot of cutting and carving, but it was just a little bit too high, things didn't seat well, and it wasn't going to work when you want a reasonably precise target Mauser. The only idea left I had was ordering a Boyd's Charles Daly pro varmint. Based on other forums where people swear its the same receiver. The dimensions on their site almost all match up. The space between screw holes, the front and rear ring sizes etc.. but the floor plate length is somehow 7 11/16ths on their website, but on my action it is more like 7 8/16ths. I didn't know this until today, so I may be returning that and paying a 15% restocking fee.
Long before I got here, I have emailed Zastava 10 billion times. I got help with a barrel thread size after 3 weeks of waiting for a reply. I have since asked them, where I could get an LK-M70 stock. They don't know, they don't have them atm. I asked for blueprints for in-letting so I can pay a million dollars and ask a stock maker to do it. No answer. I asked Boyd's why they only have a left hand version, and they don't even really seem to know. He suggested maybe he could add a right hand as if it is a bizarre idea. ??????
My action is right hand. Most rifle shooters are right-handed. Am I missing something?
Rant over. I'm sorry this is long and tedious, like the beginning stages of this project. I'm hoping the Boyd's stock I ordered works out even if I have to do a little slicing, so long as the basic fit is there. Otherwise, I think im, going to fling all of these components and myself into the river.
