So, we have a one-strike-and-you're-out policy and death sentence?

No mistakes allowed.

Wow.

Tom,

These comments are from one of the most recognized names in the Hunting Industry who has made his living from freedoms of the Second Amendment. A person of his stature and influence should fully understand the meaning of the Second Amendment and not be speaking out against it.

He writes for publications that are benefactors of Second Amendment freedoms and is not someone from the general public that may not know any better.

Mr. Zumbo should be on the front line defending the Second Amendment for everyone that enjoys the freedoms it provides instead of just defending the portion ("sporting firearms") that allow him to make financial gain.

He deserves everything he brought upon himself and I will boycott any company that continues to support him in any way.

Tom - I don't think that you're being fair. I was listening to your show and you keep defending Zumbo from two perspectives; he's not a 'gun guy', and we're delighting in eating our own (a la S&W, Bill Ruger, etc.).

1) He gets paid to express opinions about things that involve firearms. He has a professional responsibility to know what he's talking about, or ****. If he's not a gun guy, then he ought to keep his opinions to himself and go sell fertilizer or something.

2) We don't eat folks alive for being wrong about issues related to the technicalities of firearms or hunting or other such things. If you complain that the AR-15 shoots 20-caliber bullets, for example, we'd poke at you but we wouldn't be overly rude to you about it.

But we cannot abide, and MUST ostracize, anyone who would profess to speak for gunowners or sportsman and who calls for a reduction or elimination in our Second Amendment freedoms. Period.

It's that simple. If he'd have said that AR-15 rifles are for sissies, nobody would have cared. But when he called for them to be banned for lawful sporting purpose by the government, he crossed a Rubicon.

Apology:

I was wrong, BIG TIME
Someone once said that to err is human. I just erred, and made without question, the biggest blunder in my 42 years of writing hunting articles.

My blog inflamed legions of people I love most..... hunters and shooters. Obviously, when I wrote that blog, I activated my mouth before engaging my brain.

Let me explain the circumstances surrounding that blog. I was hunting coyotes, and after the hunt was over and being beat up by 60 mph winds all day, I was discussing hunting with one of the young guides. I was tired and exhausted, and I should have gone to bed early. When the guide told me that there was a "huge" following of hunters who use AR 15's and similar weapons to hunt prairies dogs, I was amazed. At that point I wrote the blog, and never thought it through.

Now then, you might not believe what I have to say, but I hope you do. How is it that Zumbo, who has been hunting for more than 50 years, is totally ignorant about these types of guns. I don't know. I shot one once at a target last year, and thought it was cool, but I never considered using one for hunting. I had absolutely no idea how vast the numbers of folks are who use them.

I never intended to be devisive, and I certainly believe in United we Stand, Divided we Fall. I've been an NRA member for 40 years, have attended 8 national NRA conventions in the last 10 years, and I'm an advisory board member for the United States Sportsmen's Alliance which actively fights anti-hunters and animal rights groups for hunter's rights.

What really bothers me are some of the unpatriotic comments leveled at me. I fly the flag 365 days a year in my front yard. Last year, through an essay contest, I hosted a soldier wounded in Iraq to a free hunt in Botswana. This year, through another essay contest, I'm taking two more soldiers on a free moose and elk hunt.

When I started blogging, I was told to write my thoughts, expressing my own opinion. The offensive blog I wrote was MY opinion, and no one else's. None of the companies that I deal with share that opinion, nor were they aware of what I had written until this firestorm started.

Believe it or not, I'm your best friend if you're a hunter or shooter, though it might not seem that way. I simply screwed up. And, to show that I'm sincere about this, I just talked to Ted Nugent, who everyone knows, and is a Board member of the NRA. Ted is extremely active with charities concerning our wounded military, and though he's known as a bowhunter, Ted has no problem with AR 15's and similar firearms. My sincerity stems from the fact that Ted and I are planning a hunt using AR 15's. I intend to learn all I can about them, and again, I'm sorry for inserting my foot in my mouth.

IMHO, he was IGNORANT. That is curable.

Now, get on the thing, and invite him shooting. If you're gonna shoot a CMP match, invite him.

There's a lot of low-road remarks here, starting with the very first one.

Look, I agree that this guy is wrong. I might be able to find some common ground with him if he pointed out that it's more sporting without semi-auto rifles, that they're not traditional and ruin some of the aesthetics of a classy sport, etc.

But his simple objection is that "the rifles-- they frighten me." He is literally scared and upset about an object. The simple tool reminds him of terrorism.

This is hoplophobia at its worst, and from a gun writer, no less. Disgusting.

While I would personally be turned off to see a guy spraying bullets at varmints or game, I am no more so than I am turned off by the thought of a gun writer saying that the only guns worth defending are "sporting firearms."

He has no idea that he is part of the problem, and that's troubling. The center just slid left a bit.

I'll take that apology. He was ignorant, made a stupid statement, apologized for it, and is going to learn from it.

Let's just hope all of the other outdoors and hunting magazines were listening!

Zumbo's explanation.

Despite your cheap shot, that's exactly what we are talking about.
I suppose that comment was aimed at me. I am listening. And you haven't addressed those particular comments yet. You have only addressed the appropriateness of an AR for hunting.

It's not a cheap shot. He made the comment and he needs to explain it in detail. Or do you want to ignore it?

So when is Zumbo going to start writing for the Brady Center?
I'm sure he'd fit right in with their upcoming legislation banning "assault Rifles"
anyone who lives in the vaccuum of not knowing how pending legislatlion can affect our sport is indeed a fool

BTW, I think it is damned unpatriotic to lump me in with terrorists. I have served in our armed forces for 10 years now. And I am very offended by the comments.

So is he going to apologize for actively advocating making the use of certain STYLES of firearms he doesn't like illegal?

To me this is the real issue not the "terrorist rifles" comment.

What he has failed to realize is that many Blackrifle folke
spend more money a year on shooting hardware,
ammo and accessories than any 12 deer hunters.

the typical AR poster at arf.com:

buys an A2 20
gets a leapers gooseneck and an aimpoint
buys a Swann neck
buys a new lugged barrel
and a railed float tube
and a case of ammo
and a magpul stock
then takes a class and decides to get a flattop and some tactical glass
and starts eyeing a .308

Meanwhile Elmer Fudd is debating if he needs an extra box
of 30-30 for his walmart special huntin rifle that he has not fired in 9 months

Hey Zumbo, which group do your advertisers want to market full page ads toward?

Last time I checked the AR15 has sold a few hundred thousand units in the US market

so there are a half a million terrorist rifleman in the US?

I gather he now realizes we won't gladly move to the back of the bus.

The "hard day at the office" line is weak and the patronizing attempt to placate AR owners by going hunting with Ted Nugent a clear attempt at damage controll. You called us terrorist.

What really bothers me are some of the unpatriotic comments leveled at me.

Well, going out of your way to associate law abiding Americans with terrorists has obviously bothered quite a few patriotic folks too, sir.

Everyone:

It's understandable that everyone is upset over this (as well we should be!), but please keep THR forum rules in mind.

On THR, we do not attack other forum members. Attack the argument, not the person who made it.

Hope that's clear enough, and won't need to be repeated.
