Nice sunny day, so I decided to to a little (un) scientific research on the expansion of various .22lr rounds. The rounds included were Winchester Super-X (40 gr copper coated round nose 1300 stated fps), federal champion 510 (40 gr LRN at a stated 1240 FPS), Remington subsonic (38gr hp) and the Winchester subsonic hollow point (40 gr).
The Winchester super x penetrated 27 inches of water and did not expand or deform any noticeable amount.
The federal 510 penetrated 24 inches of water and deformed a small amount on the base.
The Winchester subsonics penetrated roughly 16 inches and deformed greatly. This round hit the jug noticibly harder, making a loud splat and flipping the first jug.
The Remington subsonic behaved like a solid and did not expand. It penetrated roughly 20 inches.
All projectiles are picture from left to right in the order introduced.
