The pre-2009 336 is great rifle in either 30-30 or 35. But the 35 really shines with reloaded 180, 200, or even 220 grain bullets. The 35 is factory loaded so as not to destroy old rifles like the Remington 14. But the 336 can handle a bit more.
.30-30 if your into light bullets and store bought ammo, .35 if your more into heavier bullets and reloading. I'm still kicking myself today for passing up a BEAUTIFUL Marlin 336 in .35 Remington... :banghead:
I like the 30 30 because ammunition is cheap and easy to find just about anywhere. It takes the same bullets that I use for all my other .30 caliber rifles too when I load my own.
I do a good bit of subsonic .30 shooting, so those bullets usually work great for 30 30 loadings. Mostly just me being lazy and not wanting to buy more/different components lol.
The 35 is a good round and wins on coolness and just having something different.
The 35 will make a bigger hole. But a 170 gr 30-30 will run 150-200 fps faster than a 200 gr 35 and will get deeper penetration and flatter trajectory. Plus cost considerably less and in my experience the 30-30's I've shot have tended to be a little more accurate. Pick your poison. I seriously doubt any animal on the planet will be able to tell the difference.
I've got both and would sell the 35's long before I'd consider letting any of the 30-30's go. I think the 30-30 is just more versatile.
The only 35 cal that in own in a 35Whelen. Never thought about owning any other 35's. When i have the Whelen IMHO i have the best.
The load my rifle likes the best is 250 Gr Speer Grand Slam with 57.0 gr of Reloader 15
Uh that may be so in your state but in PA you can find .35rem in every shop and Walmart (if it's not sold out). It is one of the most popular cartridges in PA. Pretty prevalent in West Virginia as well as TN and about anywhere else that a lever gun is popular.
As far as what I prefer, It would be the .30/30 simply because it was my very first deer rifle.
If it is for deer, .30-30 would work well. If elk or similar sized game are on the agenda, .35 Rem may be better. But everyone should still have a .30-30.
Everyone for sure should own a 30/30 but I hunt with and around many other hunters and when I pull that baby out its always.. and I mean always the same sentence I can hear it coming...man I love that gun I wish I would have bought one instead of this 336 W I mean walmart..30/30...for 150you more dollars I could have got walnut and 200 grains of awesome .. well maybes not quite like that but its what they were thinking when they say it...wonder why? ? I've heard it at least 100 times
I have seen a big difference. In hunting w my 35 vs 30/30 around 150 yd shots with my 35 and the deer are way to easy to find.....there still laying where I shot em not saying im good but I think the 200 grains of hornady seem to help even with slightly poor placement however I have placed great 30/30 shots at 125 yds and took a hike...just my experience
Ok now here's the only right answer to the op...if he is old enough for a 30/30 he's old enough for a 35 no question ..now you can find a million 30/30 daddy bought this stories..not near as many daddy bought me a walnut 35 rem that alone is exactly what a boy wants..let's be honest we were all boys once.. never once did we think hey pops just grab me an ol 30/30 like johnny johnsons
First off it will be used. Second he is 23. He wants a lever for deer but up here in Maine both of us have run into bears and moose. He has his grandfather pre' 64 winchester 70. He just can't make up his mind. His birthday is coming up and their is a real nice straight grip 30-30 from 72 but a .35 in pistol grip and he just can't decide. Thanks...jsnaps
.35 Remington is largely a regional thing. There are states where it is popular and lotsa stores carry it, and other parts of the country where it is not common and ammo is harder to find.
