Hi and thanks for your attention.

I inherit a Marlin 336 from my Dad and it is difficult these days to find ammo for it, as of the inscription on the rifle it is a Cal. 35 Remington, I learn that they were also versions of this model that uses Winchester 30-30.

My question is can I use 30-30 rounds on the 35 Remington version? I herd this from some people here but I want to make sure by asking more experienced or owners of a Marlin 336.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As stated above the 35 Remington and 30-30 are completely different cartridges. If you plan to keep and use your dad’s Marlin 336 in 35 Remington, and I think you should ; then might I suggest when you find 35 Remington ammo on the shelf buy it. It will generally show up on shelves in greater amounts as deer season approaches. It usually goes quickly , and supplies are limited by the end of the season. In the South it has a following among whitetail hunters, but due to its limited availability all of the 35 Remington fans that I know reload for it. Enjoy you new lever action….Tentwing

Welcome to THR!

As everyone before me said - do not substitute ammunition!

California has different rules for ammo purchases. There is a website (ammoseek.com) that helps, but many of the companies will not ship to California. Ammoseek currently does not show any 35 Rem available. Good luck on your search.

.35 Remington is the ONLY ammo that can be used in that rifle.

Most calibers are difficult to find, at this time.
Be diligent, you will find the correct ammo.
Go to ammoseek.com and set up a search. It may take a few months, but supplies are getting better.

Good luck

Your advice is greatly appreciated, I will be looking to acquire a few boxes as soon as they are available.

Thanks for your help, and you are right as far as I learn and by asking online ammo sales, they only can sale to FFL in California, a big disadvantage for me as this will increase the price that is already very high.

Thanks for the site recommendation I will keep searching.

The 35 Rem cartridge probably peaked in popularity in the 1970's. At that time, it was almost as popular as 30-30 locally, but it has been spotty finding ammo for it for years. Most manufacturers make a small run once a year and when it sells out it is gone till the next year. And with the ammo shortages lately not many manufacturers want to take the time to run another batch.

Most of what you see for sale is stuff that people have had for years and are selling at scalper prices to people who can't find it. If you do ever run across some at a decent price I'd advise stocking up.

Ammunition has been hard to find & expensive when found the past couple of years. I hope you can find some. I always liked the Marlin leverguns. I had a .30-30 for a while but never a .35. Your Dad left you a good gun.

Congrats! 35 Remington is one of the greatest woods deer cartridges of the south! I’ve had a 336T since 1964!
Nope, 30-30 and 35 REM are two totally different cartridges.

Question: Is it a straight stock (Texan model)? If so, you have a somewhat rare Marlin 336. I don’t think Marlin made the 35 REM 336 Texan much after 1964. (I stand to be corrected if in error).
If so, your Dad really left you a gem!!!! And should you ever decide to sell it, make sure you get a premium for it!!!!!! Not that you would ever sell it!
But either model, you have a great hunting rifle made by one of the greatest lever action company’s of all time!
Again, congrats!!!!!

10 or 12 years ago when I bought a 30-30 Marlin, I was considering 35 Remington. I decided against it as I didn't reload and 30-30 was more common. 35 Remington ammo was there, but less of it.

I would suggest just being patient. When you do find ammo, get enough so you don't have to worry about that question for a while.

35Rem availability comes and goes. A while back I got a single stage press, and all the loading doo dads to load my own. I have a couple hundred rounds on hand. And as a hunting rifle, that will last me quite a few seasons. Your best bet is to keep an eye on websites and ammo search engines like ammoseek.

@Satvader
I use AmmoSeek as @Seedy Character had recommended earlier.
https://ammoseek.com/
If you set up an account with them and do a search for .35 Remington you can receive notifications if the ammo comes into stock somewhere that AmmoSeek monitors. They will send you an email. If they send you a notification your search for that item may be turned off so you may want to reset it if you don’t want to buy from the vendor that AmmoSeek alerted you about.

Also, since you are in California (I am as well) I recommend you go to a local gun / ammo dealer and see what they require to receive ammo on your behalf. You can have ammo shipped to you if it goes to an FFL.
Also, in this “wonderful” state on must have a gun “Registered” in their name at the address where you live to be able to receive the ammo from the dealer. Ask your local dealer / FFL about this.

Good Luck and Welcome to The High Road. :)

Do NOT use .30-30 rounds in the 35 Remington or you will hurt and/or kill yourself and destroy the firearm. Always and only use ammunition designated for use in any firearm by the manufacturer. Do NOT deviate.....
