308 Semi-automatic

kyjoe,
Yes the saigas are hard to beat for pretty much everything and out to 600yds depending on what game.
My first .308 has over 2K rounds with 0 FTF and 0 FTE.
After conversion is giving .7 MOA consistently. You give up a tad of speed but it is well balanced. It loves NATO loads. Hard to beat in both accuracy and reliability.

Cheers,
E.

My personal dream .308 is on the Ruger Mini platform
why so 308 can be inaccurate too? It would be more expensive than an AR and less practical? thats what the 223's are now!

A ".308 on the Ruger Mini platform" is called Springfield M1A Socom.
Awesome system.
I don't think anyone can seriously say that a Springfield M1A is "inaccurate". BTW,I had Mini-14 and Mini-30 and neither was "inaccurate". As for the:
It would be more expensive than an AR and less practical?
This has absolutely nothing to do with MY dream .308 win semi-auto.

well guys, I am sitting here getting ready to go to the gun store. I have recently really gotten into coyote hunting. I already have a Ruger M77 Mark II 22-250 and a Bushmaster Varminter .223 with a 3rd gen night vision scope. I have really been thinking about getting a .308 semi myself but that is one gun I have never fired. There are too many choices... I'm not sure what the best one to get is obviously. I may end up walking into the gun store and buying whatever he has on the shelf, which could turn out to go either way...

Shurshot,
Many good choices out there and some recommended here. I always recommend trying the system you are considering whenever you can. Or just try what you can at the local range, friends, etc... Ask around and also think what type of shooting and bullet you want first before you consider the carbine or rifle as this narrows the options.
In the end the bullet and purpose is what it matters. The system is just a part of the delivery method.
Cheers,
E.

just got back from the gun store. I ended up having some conversation with a couple people I have known for years and decided on something a little different. I ordered a Remington R25 in .243 and should have it by Friday. Now I need to order some glass for it. I am considering a Trijicon. My thinking is that it will be the best choice in those hours between daylight and dark where neither the Leupold or the NV will be at their best. also need to get some different type of ammo ordered today to see what it will like.

Congrats! Pretty good choice.
Just make sure keep some of the powder solvents away from the camo finishing (it bubbles up). it is not the best cammo material in the world but it works. In the end it is a DPMS dressed up with cammo. Trijicon cannot go wrong. Also look into the Vortex. I have several Leupold, Nikon and Burris and I am very happy with them but next one will be the Vortex with zerostop. Superb Japanese glass too.

marine- I guess I didn't really think of the m1A I do like those.. no accuracy issues as general rule...

as far as the mini, they are hit and miss some are okay and some are crap.. the barrel twist that ruger switched to alone is undesirable to me.. I guess I'm just an AR guy. I may have just been scared off by post after post where guys are getting pie plate accuracy at 100 yrds for 600.00+ rifle I would want a little better. I don't hate them I was just being funny.. but no one can argue they have had their challenges

shurshot-

this is my lr-243(same thing you got for the most part)

suzukisam,
Every time I see your .243 the more I want one of those. Beautiful system mang!

I am also an AR guy but then I was very surprised about the nice performance of these Russians in .308. See my post here....

I guess I am an AK guy too! ....and a M1A, and a glock guy, and Lanber, and FN, and Saiga, and keltec, and remington, ..........LOL!!!

AKanator, judgment day....

nice ak! yeah I originally started lusting over the thought of a .243 on the 308 platform.. but I went with the 308... and about a year later I got the bug back and I just jumped in it.. I had it built exactly the way I wanted it.. I'm going to be shooting it tomorrow. the guy that built it for me is taking me to his range. there is a 300yd bench, I'll try to get some pics up if possible of my results. last time I was there I was consistently shooting 1" at 200. I'll be eating my words tomorrow probably though, all this cold I've done little shooting at all..:cuss:

you guys have some sweet rigs for sure. I notice that you use the tall rings on your scope. not sure if they are 1" or 1.5". I have everything ordered I need now except the scope. I was going to get a Trijicon, but they say 4 week for delivery! don't think I can wait...

my second choice I think will be the Nikon Coyote Special. mainly because it is camo and they claim very good in low light conditions. I looked at the Vortex but the reticle was way too busy for me. The Nikon does have a BDC reticle, but they don't really say what round it is setup for. I am looking for something bright as I can get it in low light conditions.

I have a Gander Mountain close by so I think I will make a call to them after they open up today to see if they have the Nikon and maybe look to see what else they have in stock. I want to have everything I need by Friday. I sure would like to bag a yote with it by next weekend.

shurshot- even if the reticle isn't set for your gun and bullet as a general rule it won't matter, you will be able to use the ballistic plex and determine at what power and what yardage the lines equal for you. and then you will still have a quick reference for yardage for example me and my bro have a burris fullfield II on ARs mines 243, and his is 6.8. his 200 yrd line is more like 230 for me. but it doesn't matter as long as we each know what our lines are four our gun

yes, I realize that. ranging your shot is the hardest thing to do sometimes for me. I just have to be able to find the scope first... I even called gander before I left to make sure they had one and they said they did, but after I got here they did not. bummer

I may end up limiting myself to what the gun shop has to choose from the day I pick up my gun. I will likely put something on it that day. Then I will either order the Trijicon or the Nikon. That way I will have something for the .308 when I decide I have to have one. lol

Shurshot,
Cannot go wrong with the Nikon. I have several monarch, including the 5x20 and the best part is the glass.
I love leupold but in low light I think that nikon beats them. It is really hard to say as they both are great glass but also another thing I like abut the monarchs is the eye relieve, the amount of "play" there is for fast acquisition and even at max magnification. They are extremely crisp both at dusk and dawn.
suzukisam is right, you can learn how to estimate range with the ballistic drop and map back to your ballistic chart w/o any problems.
Also you can go online and use the nikon software, providing the load you can use the BDC with great reliability. It is a bit more training but when you are done they are dead on.
I cannot not tell you about the coyote BDC as I only have Monarchs but what I hear from other folks at the range it is the same good experiences. Japanese glass is superb.
Cheers,
E.

In Missouri, be careful about using Assault Rifles during deer season. Missouri has a cartridge limit! I was looking into a Winchester SX-AR, would still like to get one. I had used a .308 Norma Mag in the past. The past two years I had changed up to a black powder during rifle season. Now I am contemplating a TK2000 Knight Shotgun for Spring Turkey Season...as I digress lol.

Just wanted to let you know some states like Missouri have a limit in the number of bullets a gun can hold. So can't use a 10 clip and only put four in it.

Good Shooting,

EGC- um Missouri has a ten round limit.. I use a ten rounder with one in the chamber

this from the MDC website for 2010 deer firearms section:
Methods prohibited (in use or in possession)

* self-loading firearms with capacity of more than 11 cartridges in magazine and chamber combined
* ammunition propelling more than one projectile at a single discharge (such as buckshot)
* full hard metal case projectiles
* fully automatic firearms
* any sighting device that casts a beam of light on the game
* electronic calls or electronically activated calls

I ordered a couple 15 round clips to have and I will have the 4 round clip that comes with it. I believe 5 is the limit in Ohio anyway. I also ordered a Nikon Coyote Special 4.5-14x40 and rings today and I hope to have it before Friday. I have 58g Hornady, 80g Remington Express, 80g Winchester Super-X, 100g Federal Power-Shok and 100g Winchester Super X Powerpoint ammo to test and sight in with and see what it likes. I am testing some of the cheaper stuff to start off with.

Shurshot- what twist is that barrel? I have really good accuracy out of the 75gr sierra and the 85gr tsx.. the 243 is a fun gun to load for

it has a 1:10 twist. I have never loaded rifle or pistol. I have loaded over 10,000 12 gauge though. I hope I can find some factory loads somewhere that it really likes.

Well the 1:10 will limit you a little. But look into black hills and feral premium.. I can drop deer size game drt with an 85gr tsx..see if you can find that in a factory load.. and your scope will be perfect I'm running a fullfield II in the same dimensions

1:10 is good. I ordered 1:9 for the 6x45 project due to the solid copper bullets being longer than the average. They need to be longer since for them to make the grain w/o the lead inside they need to be longer.
As for the mags, some low count for hunting they are many times just the 10 rounders with dimples in the front and the back so the follower cannot go any further. You can buy them like this or make one with a steel punch. It is easy if you have to do it.
Cheers,
E.

the price on the ammo just keeps creeping up on this, but after I get it sighted in with this cheap ammo I will buy some of the Federal and test it out. pretty pricey just to get it sighted and broken in. I am anxious to get it all put together and ready to shoot
