I have owned, and shot a lot of handguns over the the years, but I have always been able to shoot a .38 Special six shot snubbie the best. Anybody else like these old school wheelies? For some reason I always hit best with a Smith model10 2", or Detective Special. It's the fit and balance for me I guess. I have the big hands and all that, but the .38 snub is nice for me. All the best folks.

Very similar for me. I have big hands and apparently odd bone structure in my hands. For me it's the j frame round butt guns that are just right, but the detective special isn't bad. I jump from j frame right on up to L frame, most k frames feel funky snd I don't shoot them well. I know it's all in the grips though.

Right on. Mine is an old model 10 with the 2" barrel. Stumbled across it in one of my favorite shops one day and bought it. I always wanted one so why not? It is a great shooter, but it's also in fabulous condition. Refocusing on .38 Snubs. Regards.

I do have a real fondness for the K-frame smith snubbies, if they are round butt guns.

I have a little Model 64 factory DAO that is a super nice carry piece.

I have a couple square butt Model 10-5s with 2" barrels, but I'm just not crazy about the square butt on a K-frame snub.

Hmmm... Glad I posted this as I'm interested in finding out about the old Smith .38s. I'll get a pic if mine up after it's been shined up.

Some time in the early 1950's I was a young fellow about 9-10 years old. I was with my dad and a neighbor cutting firewood when it became obvious quickly that a coiled copperhead was right there where we were.

The neighbor pulled what I learned that day was a snub nose .38 from his back pocket and with one shot blew the snakes off.

From that day on I've been fascinated with snub nose .38 revolvers. :scrutiny:

I like .357, .44, and .45 snubs as well. Different story though.

Interesting as k and L frame use the same grips. I'm the same way but the opposite. I shoot the K frame better and it feels better in my hand. I think it has to do with trigger reach or some such, but you aren't alone in that.

You hit the nail right on the head Meatballs, I shoot snubs very well. I can't shoot an AL worth beans, never have shot them well. But put me behind a wheel gun, or better yet a snub, and I can cut a hole in the center of the target.

I have a S&W 66-5 snub that feels like I was born with it, an extension of my arm is what it feels like in my hands. But the cartridge I shoot seems to make little if any difference. Full house .357 mag. 296 reloads shoot just as well for me as +P 38's. And it makes no difference if I'm shooting 125 gr, 140's or 158 .357 mag, or everything from 110's through 158's in +P 38's, I still find myself having to patch the center of the target after just a cylinder, other wise I can't tell if I hit the target.

Interesting story, my son killed a mule deer from about 150 yds. with a .357 snub. The only shot he had was a head shot, and he flat nailed it, it flipped backwards, feet went straight up in the air, DRT.

Ruger 101 5718 in the winter and S&W 642 or the 442 in summer.

Cocked & Locked --- Some honest carry wear on your collection --- nice, an love the Tyler-T's.
Just got the T's for the 642.
Tyler-T is back (about 3 week lead time) an doing well.

Nice snubnose collection. I too have always been fascinated by snubbies, especially those of the J frame configuration. Have had the occasional Colt Detective Special and Agent, but I just like the slightly smaller compact size of the S&W J frame.

Agreed

For me ive never shot a .38 snubnose, but my .44 special snubnose has been my favorite gun to shoot period. Like you were saying id ont know what it is about it but the balance has always just been right for me. I own a few semi-automatics, but that little snubnose revolver has always been the gun i shoot with the best

My S&W Model 10-5 snub nose revolver is one of my absolute favorites - one of the last firearms to ever leave my collection, I believe.

A Question: When you folks talk about "able to shoot a .38 Special six shot snubbie the best" and " I shoot snubs very well. ... put me behind a ... snub, and I can cut a hole in the center of the target", at what distance are you shooting? I shoot mine a lot with .38 spl. target loads, and am OK out to ten yards, but it takes a LOT of concentration and focus to hit consistently with the snubby at 30 feet.

When you shoot a snub nose 'the best', how far away is your target?

Thanks.

... and Cocked & Locked sure can take some fabulous pictures! Maybe his subject matter makes it easy to look good -

Cocked & Locked

I have had similar results while shooting a friends snubnose Model 19. The first time I ever used it firing as fast as I could pull the trigger, with some moderately hot handloads, I was able to put all six rounds in the black at around 30 feet. Of course a slicked up double action helped matters somewhat but that particular gun with that short barrel just seemed to be inherently accurate.

I have a collection of Colt Cobras, Agents, Detective Specials, and one lonely Smith. I can shoot a good score on a LE qualification course with any of them.

I have a couple of .38 snubbies. No K frame Smiths, but I do have a Colt DS that I like to carry now and then. Recently I got a Baby Chief that has started to see some use.

The Colt is easier to shoot due to it's larger grip.

My favorite is the often ignored S&W Model 12 Airweight.
6 rounds of K-Frame goodness that's light to carry.
With the success using scandium alloys, and CC popularity now, I can only wonder why S&W doesn't resurrect this one.

Nice Baby Chief! :what:

Fine looking Model 12 S&W! :what: I'd like to run across a round butt one locally.

This one below is a square butt model 12 and it just ain't the same. It is death on rats around the chicken house with hand-loaded .38 shot shells.

My preference runs to the 2 1/2 S&W Combat Magnum, be it the 19 or 66.

Heavy enough to control one handed using such as Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWHP at 1000+ fps from a 2 1/2 barrel yet very easy to carry on a belt.

Do you care to share your hand-load data? Which size shot you are using etc?
Thanks

Cocked & Locked, I agree with your sentiments on the round butt vs square butt Model 12. Mine is a round butt. :neener:

Also, I enjoyed looking at your fine collection of snub-nosed revolvers. Very nice, indeed. I couldn't help noticing that a couple of your J-frames have been fitted with Herett's "Shooting Ace" grips. You don't see these grips very often but they are favorites of mine. Both of my Model 60s are so equipped.
