44 mag 240 gr pet loads

Of the powders that flow poorly through my powder measures, 800X was the only one that I still enjoyed using. Especially in the 44 Mag.

DING, DING, DING! Slamfire is the Winner of this thread.
Elmer Keith's classic load was 22.0 grs 2400 with his 245-250 grain Lyman 429421 bullet. The bullet was his design. This is a great full power load. For a mid range load, which pushed a 240 lead bullet just at 1000 fps, I used 8.5 grains Unique. Unique is very flexible in the 44 Magnum case and produces outstanding accuracy at almost magnum velocities.

As to choice of pistol, for single actions, it was always Ruger.

for double action revolvers, it was always S&W

Rule3 gets Honorable Mention!
H110/W296 is all or nothing full house loads

2400 has a little leeway but still'magnum loads)
Unique for general loads
Hp38/W231 as well.

23.5 of 110 with 240 JSPs is accurate in my 7.5 SBH and Henry 44mag all day everyday. As mentioned 110 is full house or nothing.

K got all components rounded up. I'm going to take folks advice here and load up with 8.5 unique and 9.0 titegroup or +- a bit if I have a Lee disk that is close.

My 49th shows unique is 10 to 11.7 but I'm sure you guys are right. Unique doesn't seem to mind much being loaded lighter. Only use in 357 and 45 currently.

I use Unique for mid-range, personal defense loads and W296 for full bore loads.

800-X was a favorite. That 4# of 700-X have to do.

4227 is a traditional favorite

AA#9 is amazing

Unique being difficult to find, I have been loading Herco and like it as much or more.

Clays is a good plinker load.

H110 or L'il Gun for hunting loads with XTPs

For curiosity I shot my 8.5 unique and 7.0 titegroup over chrono, I dropped titegroup from my original thought. 6" anaconda. Used win and seller and bellot primers. 2 sets of 5 each on all combinations. Both fun to shoot at steel and recoil soaked up by anaconda. Both smoky, maybe titegroup a bit more. Not sure I'd change a thing on loads. Will try again when I get coated swc from mbc. Easy to shoot well, 2" dot at 16 yds forearm resting on rubber wheel chok.

Unique winlp: av 1104, es 28, sd 11 1st and 1111, 25, 10 2nd
Unique s & b: 1089, 28, 11 and 1094, 37, 13
Titegroup winlp: 1039, 17, 6 and 1041, 10, 4
Titegroup s&b: 1031, 27, 11 and 1033, 18, 7

I see 10 of unique as being a popular load.

When I hunt down more components I want to go up and maybe down a bit with both titegroup and unique. I wouldn't mind a bit more punch but wanta make sure the extra powder is worth it for accuracy too. Both loads kick my 1/2" plate at 35 yds pretty good.

Another Unique user here. I believe 9.5 gr under a 240 gr LSWC was about 1100 fps out of a 6" barrel.

H110-24gr 240mbc or XTP. Shooting it im a 7.5 Blackhawk and find them pleasant, a smaller gun wouldnt be im sure.

12gr of longshot was what i used for a plinker load in my sbh, till i switched to plinking with the gp100 in .44 special.
My 44 special load is 8gr of unique

10 gr Unique under just about any 240 gr cast is a sweet shooter!

No doubt about it; it's been such a "go to load" that I haven really experimenter much more.

I've recently started burning some 2400 in the .44mag (I know, I'm 60+ years behind the times:D) and, from my limited experience, I think we have a contender!

24.0 H110/240XTP or JSP, 21.0 N110/240XTP or JSP both run great out of my wife's Ruger 44 carbine. We both prefer the N110 load though, clean, less recoil, less"blammo", and accurate. H110 load is ~100fps faster in the 18.5" barrel, not sure the velocity difference would be near that big in a pistol. As always, start at start load and work up!

0.5 grains from max of 110/296 is accurate in my guns with 240 gr swc pc from mbc sized appropriate to my chamber throats. extraction is easier than 10.5 gr unique that kicks less with the same bullet in the same gun. 12.5gr 800x is also very accurate for me.

Darn, I kinda wrote titegroup off. A few soft shooting plinking loads are always nice to have on hand so I may look at loading a few titegroup rounds up.
I hit a home run buying 8 lbs of Titegroup.. Its a very decent powder as long as you understand that its basically a target shooting powder. I have been trying to work off this 8 lbs for a couple of year now. the only downside that I have is when you are loading for lighter loads it tends to burn dirty.

Those three - 2400, H110, and Unique - are my go-to powders for the .44 Magnum with cast bullets.

For a plinker I like 8 grains of Unique. For general use I like 21 grains of 2400. And for top results I like 23 grains of H110.

I'm a big fan of Herco in 44 mag also! Same charge as all the Unique guys; 10 grains of Herco under a 240 SWC is a great load and gives me 1150fps from a 5.5" barrel.
