45 Super loads

Some data on Realguns.com.

I shoot the Super in my G30, but don't quote loads for it. Too much risk with that cartridge, as I run them hard.

CAUTION: The following post includes loading data beyond currently published maximums for this cartridge. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. Neither the writer, The High Road, nor the staff of THR assume any liability for any damage or injury resulting from use of this information.

I read the above mentioned realguns 45 Super data and Joe's article on "45 Super for $7" [all in still in the archives at realguns], and in May of 2000 I bought a Republic Arms Patriot 20 ounce 45 pistol from AIM for $180 [designed by Nehemia Sirkis ] and worked up to 460 Rowland loads.

About that time I built a 45 acp rifle from a 1903 Turkish Mauser I got at BIG5 for $50 and a Shilen 45acp bull barrel I got from Brownells for $100.

Here is my load data:

0) 45 acp....................... 185 gr 7.6 gr AA#5 jams w/stock Patriot
spring
1) 45 acp........................185 gr 10.2 gr AA#5 1100 fps 18,000psi
2) 45 acp +P...................185 gr 10.8 gr AA#5 1200 fps 21,700 psi
3) 45 Super.....................185 gr 12.4 gr AA#5 1312 fps 28,000 cup
4) 460 Rowland............... 185 gr 14.5 gr AA#5 1500 fps 38,800 cup
5) Easy extraction ...........185 gr 15.0 gr AA#5 *rifle
6) Case starts to stretch..185 gr 15.2 gr AA#5 *rifle
7) difficult extraction ........185 gr 16.0 gr AA#5 *rifle
8) primer falls out ............185 gr 16.5 gr AA#5 *rifle

The above work was with mixed brand once fired 45acp brass, that I think is as good as 45 super or 460 Rowland brass for pressure, but there are situations where brass makes a difference, like when case support is bad, and I prefer Starline 45acp +P brass.....

I have another 45 Super load I like for the little Para Ord P10 with terrible case support and terrible feeding [so small it really needs Seacamp's patented spring], so it must be done just right.

Para Ord P10 45acp 3.16" barrel

National Bullet 152 gr. Copperized lead semi wad cutter, .569" bulletlength
http://nationalbullet.com/index.php?name=45_Cal_Bullets

12 gr. PowerPistol, 1.275" OAL, Lee factory crimp, Starline 45acp +P brass

If Quickload is altered from 25 to 24 gr water case capacity to compensate for the thick case walls, then 1,211 fps, 26,027 psi -> 1,247 fps, 28,767 psi

chrono 1226 fps ~ 1257 fps,

Over all length is important in the short pistol for feeding and pressure.

+P brass is important with .235" feed ramp intrusion and .180" web on 45acp brass, leaving .055" of thin unsupported case wall. P.O. can do this for a 21,000 psi cartridge to improve feeding, but at 29,000 psi, I need the thick case walls to avoid a case bulge.

thanks for the great info, clark.

i remember reading some time ago that triton ammo had published some load data for 45 super using AA#7 on their website. However, I can't seem to track any of that data down. does anybody know if that data is still available somewhere?
