Ball ammunition and .380 personal defense

Hit COM and those things become much less relevant. Don't hit COM and well, sure any advantage is helpful, just probably not near as much as some suspect.

I like to take that one step further and adhere to the belief that failure to make a shot to the heart or the brain is unsatisfactory. If all that is exposed is an appendage fine, but I believe it makes more sense to aim for anatomical targets, as do game hunters. It might sound a bit callous to make that comparison, but it's true.

fastcast, there you go ASSuming again.

You must skip every other word in my posts since you mangle my point so badly and so often.

I said I'd go COM, unless the gun in hand was .380 or smaller, in that instance, I'd go for face/throat shots.

The smaller you go in caliber and power, then the more precise (or lucky) you need to be.

Going for COM with a .380 or less isn't in my game plan. Feel free to test your theory. If and when you do, please leave instructions for your next of kin to post the results. :D

IIRC some .380 JHP's in the past were noted for prematurely expanding, but this seems to have changed in some more recent loadings. (My preference is for Federal's 90 grain HydraShock.)
The .380 isn't a full-power 9mm by any means, but it's certainly viable as an SD round IMHO.

I peronally choose FMJ for my Beretta 85. I choose it because it is more readily available for purchase, and it is indeed much more affordable. It's availability has led me to practice with it often. Nine rounds into the sternal notch, that's how I shoot. FMJ or JHP won't make a difference in lethality there, as there is plenty of fragile anatomy behind that location.

My .45 and .40 are stoked with hollow points when it comes to SD/HD and fmj for practice. My .380 is always filled to the gills with fmj.
