I have a Saiga [converted] 7.62x39 rifle that I was wanting to take the front sight off to see if there are threads under it. I removed the pins, but the sight isn't about to move. Even applying heat to it did nothing. Any suggestions?

there wont be any threads under it.. those were made to be legal in any state.. you MIGHT be able to put an AKM style front sight block on though, with most AKs the muzzle threads are integrated into the front sight block.. so you can either push your sight in further and have the muzzle threaded, or remove it and put on an AKM front sight block that has the threads and bayonet lug included

Hmmmm. . . . Okay.

Thanks for the help, Jason.

I was asking because I know that some people have cut that piece off [with a small pipe cutter] and found threads under it. I could try the AKM post. If I do, . . . is there a "best way" to get that original one off?

If you are planning on keeping the front sight, you could just take a tubing cutter and cut off the barrel shroud (thing that goes up :) ). If it has threads, you can use them, and if not, you can thread the barrel at that point.

the original sights are usually, if not always pressed and pinned on.. something like a pulley puller might get it off, or a shop press

Wow. I guess they really put those things ON there.

Okay, thanks.

I think this is the post you want, unless you are trying to entirely remove the front sight. I dont think you can get the shroud off to check without cutting it off. Then as per previous poster, you either luck out and find threads, or purchase a kit (~$60) to thread it yourself. I threaded the muzzle on my Saiga with no trouble, and Im far from a gunsmith or machinist.

Same here. I watched a video or two on Youtube, and it was pretty easy to do.

CNC Warrior has the 14x1LH kit you need. I think it is about $55.

I skipped the threading process, and just switched to a Bulgarian FSB. $80 or so, which is about what the tap, guide, and tap handle would cost me to thread it.

If you've got a shop press, you can get it done in 10 minutes. Just make sure you shoot it first and are positive of proper alignment, before you pin it.

I removed the pins, dremelled a line lengthwise down the sight block, and used a screwdriver I didn't care about to crack that the rest of the way. Then tapped it off with a hammer. I welded that and pressed it back on later, after a bare hint of relieving.

I have a pulley yanker and should have made a custom clamp ring for it, because the original claws flexed away before getting anything to budge. A press would have made it easy enough.

A friend of mine used a guide and a dremel (in lieu of a pipe cutter) and did find threads underneath. I couldn't even tell with the shroud on. Figured it was legal as long as they were unreachable, and I think his FSB had dimples holding it on, too. It was a couple years newer than mine.

Mine was threaded. I used a pipe cutter to cut around the shroud and a cut off wheel to split it. Then put on a flash hider and a couple crush washers. I retained the original front sight.

Can someone post the best place for a Bulgarian FSB, please? Thank you.
