Great thread!!

I work in Los Angeles and have a house in AZ. During the King riots I carried an HK SP89 with me every place I went, from the bedroom to the bathroom, apartment to the grocerie store. There were fires less than two miles away and no way of stopping the crowds.

Now, I have a house in AZ where most things are kept - my challenge will be getting across LA to get into the desert. Once at my house in AZ I'm self sufficient for a year.

So I carry a pistol with many rounds in the trunk of the car, the FAL is in AZ.

if you ever humped a couple hundred rounds of 223 , and then been , say , an asst. gunner for a 60 crew, and carried a couple hundred rounds of 308, you will deff feel a huge diff.

That's why God invented pickup trucks. :p

Either caliber will do in any scenario any of us will ever deal with.

This weekend, I humped 200 Rounds of South African 308 from my Jeep to my "gun room." A friend of mine sold it to me for 30.00 because he won't shoot it in his Reminton 40x.

I still haven't managed to wipe the smile from my face.

.308.

With the right bullets it will do almost anything better than the .223. With 150 grain softpoints it is more likely to be decisive with single hits, and will generally be less hindered by intervening barriers such as metal, wood, plastic etc.

SHTF caliber

Thanks one and all for an entertaining discussion. I've learned a lot and maybe put in my $.02 worth.

I've done my share of long range stuff... elk and moose. Got my son hooked on it with my 30-06 at age 10 and now he's been a USN trained armor, sniper, and about everything else they have (gunner's mate). I've seen the videos of his long range stuff.

I am pleased with the general gun owning public... all of you. We need to keep reminding our government that the 2nd Amendment really does mean a lot to us, and we do vote. Read your "Rifleman" and talk with your friends.

I have several coworkers that don't own guns and don't care. They do hear from me at lunch, anytime the subject comes up. Yes, even the company owner is often reminded that I do teach Hunter Safety classes to our local youth. We need to become involved, lest the "anti's" take charge.

"Climbing down off the box..." (Ya, I've had a hard day at work," says Grumpy.)

And, YES, I did just purchase my spring bear tag, and fall bear tag. Hope my 338 Win gets some exercise this year.
