Border Agents Under Fire at Rio Grande

DONNA, Texas (AP) -- Two Border Patrol agents investigating bundles of marijuana left along the Rio Grande exchanged gunfire with unseen assailants shooting from the Mexican side of the river, officials said.

The agents were unharmed Tuesday, and no one was believed injured on the Mexican side, Customs and Border Protection spokesman Oscar Saldana said.

It was the second time this year agents were fired at near that section of the river, which is less than 150 feet wide at that point.

The agents had spotted an inflatable raft near the U.S. side of the river near Donna, a small town near the southern tip of Texas, and found four bundles of marijuana totaling 305 pounds on the river bank, Saldana said.

"They went in to take a closer look. At that time the agents came under fire," Saldana said. "They immediately took cover and responded by firing as well."

The raft, carrying more marijuana, apparently returned to the Mexican shore.

Shots also were fired at agents in the area on Jan. 17.

"We anticipate more incidents like this one," Saldana said. "The smugglers feel frustrated. They're starting to take more and more drastic measures."

Source Paper?

Hey Man - can you post the link to the paper where this was published? I like to forward stuff like this to friends who aren't paying much attention, but they'll ask me that question right away, even though it looks like an Associated Press blurb.

Thanks,

Michael

Could not have happened. You have been told repeatedly that there is nothing on the border but hard working folks trying to make a living.

Now you have "eye witness reports" sheesh. Who are you going to believe? People that have been shot at or your gub'ment?
These horrible Border Patrol agents will be dealt with as before, trust us.

Move along, look down, American Idol is on in 15.......

Or we need to get in touch with our Inner Pershing.

What were those BP guys thinking, shooting back? Do they want to end up like Ramos and Compean? The Word's come down: go through the motions, wait for early retirement.

Next, I suppose the Mexican government will file a protest with the US Ambassador about our BP returning fire back into Mexico.

Well, they ought to! I mean . . . EVERYONE knows that "Mexican Nationals" cannot own guns, so we obviously were shooting into their country in the direction of unarmed people.

What an OUTRAGE . . . shooting at innocent, unarmed people who were just out on an innocent little boating trip!:banghead:

Im shocked...you mean no BP agents were arrested??? The Justice Department must not have read the papers yet...

I think its time to setup the area denial weapons like on FUTURE WEAPONS and also setup some mine fields with some mortars and heavy arty zero'd for the border. As far as I am concerned, the drug cartels have declared war on us and if Mexico is not going to do more about it then they have declared war on us.

You conspiracy theorists kill me. You know that that never happened. I wish you racists would just keep quiet and let these poor people have a chance at a better life. You all know that this country was built upon unchecked and mass immigration by people who have no vested interest in keeping the USA on track with the Constitution right?

I think its time for the second Mexican American War. Where are Teddy Rosevelt or Patton when you need em?

When I saw the title I thought Federal District Attorney Sutton was charging some more BP agents!
Same here. The fact that Mr. Sutton remains a U.S. Attorney speaks volumes about his bosses (Alberto Gonzales and Jorge Arbusto).
