Report: Sniper shoots at least 1 in Omaha mall
Mall temporarily locked down as police search for suspect

OMAHA, Neb. - At least one person was shot Wednesday at a busy Omaha mall, and police locked down the shopping center while they searched for a gunman, local media reported.

It was unclear whether the shooter was still inside the mall or how many people were wounded.

Omaha television station KETV reported an elderly man was shot inside the Von Maur store at Westroads Mall.

One shopper inside the mall, Colby Barrett told KETV that the mall was locked down briefly. She said she was shopping at another store when an announcement was made that no one would be allowed to leave.

Barrett said another announcement was made just before 2 p.m., telling shoppers that they could leave, but would not be allowed back in. At 2:30 p.m., dozens of shoppers and employees left the mall with hands above their heads.

The shooting apparently happened as President Bush was leaving Omaha, where he attended a fundraiser for Republican Senate candidate Mike Johanns.

Authorities are responding to a report of a shooting at Westroads Mall. Initial reports indicate that several people have been injured. We have several crews on the way to the scene.

The incident was reported shortly before 2 p.m. at the Von Maur store in the mall.

Authorities are looking for the gunman.

The mall has been locked down but some people have been able to leave.

There are reports that five people have been shot. There is a report that at least one person was receiving CPR. Another person has been shot in the arm.

Police have converged on the scene. The police helicopter is overhead.

Members of the Emergency Response Unit are on the scene with guns drawn.

Shortly before 2:20, a rescue squad arrived at Creighton University Medical Center from the scene at the Westroads. The patient was receiving CPR.

A second person transported to Creighton is said to be in good condition.

One witness told us she heard approximately 12 gunshots. Other witnesses told us they heard at least that many shots.

"Connie", a Westroads shopper we spoke with on the phone, tells us she heard the shots on the third floor of the mall. She said she hid and waited until the gunfire stopped and then crawled out of the mall.

Saying "gunman in camoflauge, stuck out like a sore thumb, more than a dozen shots fired." Hopefully one of our own took him down.

I don't go to the malls anymore. I haven't since 9/11. Anyone with half a brain knows they are not safe, and also a high media profile target.
<p>
Trolley Square and now this one just proves it.
<p>
Should note that Trolley Square had a no weapons policy and I'm sure this mall was the same.

Just to remind everyone!!

I do things and ask things for a reason.
In this case, this is the reason.

FBI warns of possible shopping mall attacks

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An FBI report warned al Qaeda may be planning to strike shopping malls in Chicago and Los Angeles during the Christmas season...

Is it possible that in the wake of this, our little Islamic friends simply changed the location??

Inquiring minds want to know for the sake of our families safety!!

IIRC Nebraska doesn't allow concealed carry. So we have a large, high target density area with everyone defenseless. Yet another gun free zone massacre. How many more have to die before people realize gun control doesn't work, or any laws for that matter:cuss::cuss::banghead::banghead::banghead::cuss::fire:.
let's see, he committed attempted murder if not murder, brandishing a weapon, assault with a deadly weapon, firing a gun in city limits, disturbing the peace, and many more. All we need are more laws.

Nebraska doesn't allow concealed carry.
Yes, it does. We're finishing our first year of legal CCW.

I'm not from Omaha, but I'd bet Westroads is posted "No Weapons Allowed."

We need to wait for information. Until then we are speculating.

Yesit'sloaded, Nebraska is shall issue (I believe that was a rather recent change). Nebraska's "off limits" law includes any place that is "conspicuously posted," though - so if the mall is, it might be more than just a trespassing charge if you violate the no-carry zone.

Update at the local news site link in OP:

(new info follows) The person with the self-inflicted gunshot wound, was found dead near the Von Maur customer service department.

Two people were taken into custody near a bus stop but it was not clear if those men were connected to the shootings.

A witness tells us that the shooter pointed a gun over a third-floor railing in the mall and opened fire. That witness says one person was shot in the head.

Two busloads on witness were gathered together as authorities tried to figure out what happened.

Eric, the father of a woman who is a security guard at the mall, got word around 3 p.m. that his daughter was not injured in the incident. She has been on the job for about a year and told her parents she saw one of the victims get shot.

"She called my wife. She was pretty upset," Eric told us.

Witness Chuck Wright says, "I heard this bang, bang, bang. And immediately I just froze."

He says, "As I backed off, I heard bang, bang, again."

Wright says he heard a total of 12 to 15 shots fired.

"It was just panic. Nobody knew what was going on," Wright said.

Wright told us the shootings appeared to be random.

I always get a sinking feeling when I hear about these incidents. I can picture ignorant sheeple wanting to know why we can't just outlaw all these guns, so that there will never be another shooting. :(

Me too.

What kind of a sick person does this. Very Sad.

I'm sorry, my countrywide knowledge is as old as Packing.org. But you do say that signs carry force of law, and I have never seen a mall that wasn't posted on the doors with weapons as prohibited items.

Same here, I can already hear the screaming "we need more gun control" ... because, you know, it's obviously working so well already <barf>.

Does anyone think that if a CCW took this guy down we'd actually hear about it in the news? Or if we did how long would it be before the story suddenly changed or vanished.

I don't remember any signs posted. And I just looked through a local forum that posts all the NE "no guns allowed" signs. Neither Westroads, nor Von Maur are on the list.

Some of the other malls are on that list.

Right now the place is covered with LEO, FBI, ATF...who knows who else. The whole place is cordoned off and they won't let anybody in or out. Right now there are probably several hundred potential witnesses.

George Bush was in town today too.

They found a live grenade in Westroads parking lot a few days ago-----radio is implying someone was targeted in today's shooting.

Its all a fast moving situation still.

It is sad, and very disconcerting, to hear the witnesses being interviewed on Fox News. They sound like sheep, telling of their being 'locked down' in safe places, while they waited for the police. One lady even expressed relief as the gunman chose another victim, and passed her by.
That reminded me of a Zebra on the African Veldt, sighing with relief as the lions bypassed them and chose instead, a different animal. No ability, or desire to defend themselves, just relief as another was chosen.
