I purchased a Buck 110 at the end of December and it included a $10 mail-in rebate - rebate had to be submitted prior to the end of January 2009 so I was in good shape. Sent in the original receipt and the product code - that was right after Christmas. Got a postcard today that informs me that the rebate was denied because "The sales receipt you submitted did not demonstrate purchase of the product required for the rebate."

Called the phone number on the card and got to automated robo-help. I was informed that my rebate was denied because the receipt did not demonstrate ...

Went to the website that was on the card and was informed that the receipt I submitted did not demonstrate ...

I bought the thing at Gander Mountain - does anyone know if the Gander Mountain receipts say "Stuff bought" or does it specify what you purchased? I think it specifies exactly what was purchased.

So, I'd like to know:
- Has anyone else purchased a Buck knife and been shafted on a rebate?
- Why would I want to purchase another Buck product again?

Beware of any rebates... Buck sucks.

I've never had a problem with Buck but I've never participated in their rebate program either.

Why would I want to purchase another Buck product again?

Because they make an excellent product.

Beware of any rebates... Buck sucks

Then may I suggest a Craftsman knife? Looks like the exact same knife (only difference is the logo) , costs about 10.00$ cheaper (there's your rebate) and is unconditionally guaranteed for as long as Crafstman exists

Rock,

Thanks - good info. I needed to vent there for a bit and to get the word out to the rest of the members.

Buck sucks.

Anecdote, data, plural, etc.

Are you sure you didn't just read the rebate incorrectly? Was the 110 a qualifying product, and was Gander a qualifying merchant, and so forth? It's always the fine print that gets ya.

OK, here's an update.

I contacted Buck consumer affairs from their homepage and got a note back this afternoon. They've been having problems with the company they hired to process the rebates and they'll be sending me my rebate.

Well, I made a big deal of it and now I've got to make it right - these are good folks. I think I've answered my own questions and I think they'll be getting some more of my business in the future.

This is a stand-up company. Buy Buck.

Mick

I recall a rebate I sent in for a electronics tidbit one time. The hoops and three ring circus was worthy. But it was still denied on a techicality.

LOL.

Now Buck does make good knifes. I carried one for cutting pallets loose for years, among other things.

I bought one last summer at Gander Mt. They were in a display with all the rebate flags... I buy the knife at slightly overpriced $, later read the fine print and the rebate ended in January 2008. Mail in the info.... get a letter back from Buck that the rebate ended in January 2008. So, I just decided I wouldn't buy any more stuff like that at Gander Mt regardless of a rebate. They can keep their merchandise!! Gander had them on display like the rebate was active. I'll shop at Bass Pro or Sportsmans Warehouse. Have not been back since and I don't intend to. It was not Buck's fault. It was Gander Mt with it's misleading display.

Glad to hear you pulled the trigger too soon on hating Buck.

CJ and Chuck know their customers pay the bills and it wouldn't make them very happy if the word on the street was they weren't to be trusted.

My 2 cents...

IMX, Buck is one of the most stand-up of companies.

Was given a Buck 110 as a retirement gift. Didn't like some of the questions in the send-back-for-warranty questionnaire; too personal. Wrote a letter of complaint about this, to Buck.

(The knife, BTW, my first folder larger than a SAK, became my EDC knife. And it did take, and hold, a nice edge. No moss on a 110!)

Received a PERSONAL reply back from Chuck Buck himself, addressing my concerns. He has flunkies who could have done this, I'm sure, but he made the effort himself to write the letter.

Needless to say, I was, and remain, impressed.

What questions did they ask that were over personal ?

I haven't bought a buck in 15 years ( I still have that one)

Personal questions--

Rockwell 1--Just the usual stuff after the info they'd need for a warranty--the marketing stuff about what is your income, what are your hobbies, what kind of car do you drive, etc, etc.

I wouldn't ask those kinds of questions of any of my friends, and they have nothing to do with warranty service--basically my complaint was that that type of information was none of Buck Knives' durn business.

A lot of the Buck knives here are made in China. I couldn't figure out why Wally World was so cheap till I handled one of them.

Yes some of Buck's models are made in China. But most are USA.

For example Buck has twenty models of slipjoints, only four models are made in China. These are the models that walmart chose to carry.

The 110 Walmart sells costs less because it has a cheaper foriegn made soft sheath instead of the more expensive leather, but the knife itself is 100% USA made.

To Buck's credit if a model started production in the USA it stays in the USA,like the 110. And Every USA made model is marked with the Stars and Stripes on its website.

I like that you came back and cleared the air, because I was going to actually point out that calling Buck would be the solution as opposed to the the third-party rebate company. I am not particularly fond of any of their current products, but one thing Buck is well-known for is outstanding service.

Also, why does this Buck made in China myth persist? I suppose some are made there, but not 110's. I have handled the Bucks in Wal-Mart, and they all say USA on them and are in every way just as good as the 110 I have had since I was a kid...

I had wondered how Buck avoided Chinese-made knives. At some price points it would be impossible not to make them there or India. Nothing wrong with Chinese cutlery as it really comes down to what the specifying company is asking them to make. However, every time I've picked up a Wal-Mart Buck I've looked to see where it was made and always see USA. That leads me to my next thought, "How does Buck do it?". Dunno but thanks!

If I had to guess, Buck and Walmart's relationship will gradually fade away with the US made knives as they tend to be more expensive and I hear Walmart is difficult to deal with. Buck is a standup company.

That line has expanded to 10.

Buck imported slipjoints.

Well, I tell you what - I'm impressed with the 110 that I got and I'm glad I contacted consumer affairs over the rebate. Yeah, $10 isn't a whole lot, but it's the principle of the thing. And they made it right for me, so I'm looking for another Buck right now. I went to Gander Mountain yesterday and couldn't find much in the way of Buck - most of the pegs were empty.

Anyone know anything about the Buck Pilot?

I shop here a lot. Great service. They have also been noting which ones are made in China. http://newgraham.com/store/category/1/22/Buck/

Added: I went to New Graham to create the link. After doing so, I decided to order a couple knives; SOG Access Card II and a Razel. No, the Razel was not one of the original customs by the Graham Bros. Just a factory version. But I have been meaning to buy one for a while now to try out to see if I really do want one of Josh & Jon's customs. Believe it or not, New Graham has a selection of their custom blades in stock in case anyone is interested.
